Name and geographical location

Lo Village Pagoda, also known as Sung Tich Pagoda, is located in Lo Village, Dang Xa Commune, Gia Lam District, Hanoi.

Like many pagodas in Vietnam, Lo Village Pagoda also worships the Holy Mother Lieu Hanh, reflecting the harmonious combination between Buddhist architecture and traditional folk beliefs—one of the unique features of Vietnamese religious culture.

History

The existing textual materials preserved in Sung Tich Pagoda do not specify the exact date of its construction. However, a bronze bell dated to the 5th year of Canh Thinh (1797), currently hanging in the pagoda, confirms that the pagoda has existed at least since that period.

Architecture

The main pagoda is built in the shape of the Vietnamese character “Đinh” (丁), consisting of the front hall (Tien Duong) and the upper sanctum (Thuong Dien). The front hall has five compartments, built with gable walls (bit doc tay ngai), and roofed with curved “shoe-shaped” tiles. The roof frame comprises six sets of beams of identical structure, following the traditional style “upper overlapping beams, lower curved rafters,” crafted with smooth planing and tight joints. The upper sanctum has three longitudinal compartments connected to the central part of the front hall, its structure adopting the style “upper beam rafters, lower curved rafters.”

Behind the upper sanctum lie the Mother House (for the Holy Mother worship), the Patriarch House, and the Guest House. These architectural components once had larger scales, but today only brick-built gabled structures with traditional tile roofs remain. Their roof frames are of the simple “crossbeam truss” type, planed smooth and joined tightly for strength and durability.

Artifacts

As a Vietnamese Buddhist architectural relic, the pagoda preserves a system of round statues and several valuable artifacts, including:

  • One bronze bell inscribed Sung Tich Tu Chung, dated the 5th year of Canh Thinh (1797)
  • Six stone steles from the Nguyen dynasty
  • Two horizontal lacquered boards (hoanh phi)
  • Two ceremonial doors (y mon)
  • Various ritual worship objects

All these artifacts contribute significantly to the historical, artistic, and cultural value of the monument.

  • 銅鐘一口,銘「崇積寺鐘」,景盛五年(1797)製;

  • 六方阮朝石碑;

  • 橫額匾二塊;

  • 儀門二扇;
