Name and Geographical Location

Dong Binh Pagoda, formally named Lien Huong Tu, is located in Dong Binh hamlet, Hung Tien commune, My Duc district, Hanoi city. Today, it belongs to Huong Son commune, Hanoi city.

History and Figures

The exact date of the pagoda’s foundation has not yet been determined. However, based on the architectural system, worship statues, and preserved artifacts, it can be affirmed that this is a monument of long-standing historical value, closely associated with the cultural and spiritual life of the local community.

Architectural Landscape

Dong Binh Pagoda faces south, with an architectural layout consisting of: the Tam Bao (Main Sanctuary), the Ancestral House (Nha To), the Mother Goddess House (Nha Mau), and several auxiliary structures.

The front hall (Tien Duong) follows the traditional Tam Quan style, with tiled roofs arranged in stepped levels, creating a soft and elegant impression. Below is a firm vaulted structure, highlighted by embossed ridges, forming a refined architectural emphasis. The upper roof connects to the bell tower, enhancing both the balance of proportions and the sacred, ancient atmosphere of the complex.

The roof-frame structure of the Tien Duong uses the “ke qua giang” truss system, a typical method in traditional Vietnamese pagoda and communal house architecture. The rear sanctuary (Hau Cung) connects directly to the Tien Duong, forming a floor plan in the shape of the character “Dinh” (丁). Its truss frame applies the style “thuong chong ruong, ha ruong nach”. Especially notable are two central trusses carved with majestic dragons, while the wooden brackets are decorated with stylized lotus motifs, graceful and delicate.

The Ancestral House (Nha To) and the Mother Goddess House (Nha Mau) also face south, each with five bays, solid brick walls, and double-sloped tiled roofs. Their truss systems use the ke qua giang style with precious hardwood, ensuring durability. Inside, there are three altars: the central one venerates the Three Mother Goddesses (Tam Toa Thanh Mau), the left altar honors the Ancestral Masters, and the right altar worships the Mother Goddess Son Trang. The arrangement is solemn and traditional, deeply reflecting the Mother Goddess worship in Vietnamese spiritual life.

In the Tien Duong are placed statues of Dharmapala guardians (Khuyen Thien and Trung Ac), Duc Ong, and Saintly Sages. These statues were created during the Nguyen dynasty.

The system of round statues, made of wood and clay, dates back to the 19th–20th centuries, including:

  • At the highest level: the Three Worlds Buddhas (Tam The)

  • Second tier: Amitabha Buddha (A Di Da)

  • Third tier: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (Quan Am Nam Hai)

  • Fourth tier: another Amitabha

  • Lowest level: the Nine Dragons scene and the Infant Shakyamuni

Artifacts

Currently, the pagoda preserves:

  • A bronze bell of Lien Huong Tu, cast in 1838

  • A stone stele dating to Binh Than year (1776)

  • 12 Buddha statues, several Mother Goddess statues, a stone khanh (ritual gong), and stone statues of lay donors (Hau).

Recognition

On December 31, 2003, Dong Binh Pagoda was officially recognized as a Provincial-Level Historical and Cultural Site.
