Name and Geographical Location
Thuong Tiet Pagoda, also known as Phuc Lam Pagoda, is located in Thuong Tiet Hamlet, formerly under Dai Hung Commune, My Duc District, Hanoi City. After the administrative merger in 2025, the pagoda is now within the territory of My Duc Commune, Hanoi City.
History and Figures
Thuong Tiet Pagoda was built in the 15th century, during the flourishing period of the Ho dynasty. It is situated on the same land as Thuong Tiet Temple, forming a harmonious complex of relics rich in historical imprints and traditional cultural values. Although the exact date of its construction remains unknown, the pagoda has always been regarded as a sacred place closely tied to the spiritual life of the local people. Over the centuries, it has undergone several restorations to preserve its historical and architectural values.
Architectural Landscape
Today, the pagoda complex consists of structures such as the Stupa Garden, the Tam Bao Hall, the Ancestor House (Nha To), and the Mother House (Nha Mau), creating a sacred and traditionally rich ensemble.
The pagoda is bounded by significant landmarks: to the east lies the temple dedicated to Ngo Quyen, the national hero revered by the people; to the south is the entrance gate; to the west is the guesthouse serving daily activities and pilgrims; and to the north is an ancient tree garden providing a tranquil, nature-friendly setting.
The entire site is surrounded by lush perennial trees, which not only provide shade and freshness but also preserve the inherent quietness and sacredness of the Buddhist sanctuary.
Thuong Tiet Pagoda’s architecture comprises three connected halls, forming a harmonious and balanced whole. The first hall is the Tien Duong (Front Hall), built in the “Nhat” (一) shape, serving as the main worship space. The second hall includes the Upper Sanctuary (Thuong Dien) and the Rear Sanctuary (Hau Cung), arranged in the traditional “Dinh” (丁)-shaped structure, commonly seen in ancient Vietnamese pagodas.
All halls are built with solid brick walls, distinctive closed gables, square bracketed ends, and a sturdy roof frame in the “Dinh” form. The tiled double-slope roofs create a soft and elegant silhouette. The roof framework employs the traditional “keo cau quai giang” system, crafted primarily from precious xoan wood, reflecting both sophistication and durability in Vietnamese carpentry.
Additionally, the pagoda features a longitudinal house arranged solemnly, serving as the place for ancestor worship (ban tho To) and Mother worship (ban tho Mau), and also functioning as a guesthouse. Built of brick and stone, with enclosed walls and traditional tiled roofs, this building follows the same “keo cau quai giang” structural system, using materials such as bamboo rafters, beams, and battens, giving it a rustic yet ancient monastic atmosphere.
Artifacts
The pagoda preserves many valuable artifacts, including a bronze bell cast in 1829, 15 Buddha statues, 2 bronze incense burners, 3 porcelain incense burners, 2 pairs of ceramic vases, and a carved wooden horse statue in the Nguyen dynasty round-sculpture style. In addition, the pagoda holds precious objects such as hoanh phi (horizontal lacquered boards), cua vong (arch-shaped panels), and mi mon (decorative wooden panels), enhancing its distinctive historical and cultural values.
Recognition
Thuong Tiet Pagoda was recognized as a National Historical and Cultural Relic on March 15, 2000.
