General Information

Princess Phat Kim was one of the daughters of King Dinh Tien Hoang (Dinh Bo Linh). She is frequently mentioned in official historical records as well as in artistic works depicting the life and achievements of Dinh Bo Linh. Along with Princess Minh Chau and Nam Viet Vuong Dinh Lien, she was one of the children born before Dinh Bo Linh ascended the throne.

Life

The life of Princess Phat Kim (Dinh Phat Kim), the second or beloved daughter of King Dinh Tien Hoang, represents a typical historical tragedy in the early nation-building period of the Dinh dynasty in the 10th century. She was the sister of Nam Viet Vuong Dinh Lien and, together with Princess Minh Chau, one of the children born before Dinh Bo Linh became emperor. To consolidate political alliances, King Dinh Tien Hoang married Phat Kim to Ngo Nhat Khanh, a regional warlord from the Ngo lineage, leader in Duong Lam, aiming to control the Ngo forces and restrain his rebellious ambitions.

The Cheek-Slashing Tragedy

The “cheek-slashing” incident is one of the most tragic and brutal events in Princess Phat Kim’s life, revealing the cruelty and betrayal of her husband, Ngo Nhat Khanh. He became her husband through a political marriage arranged by King Dinh Tien Hoang to strengthen alliances and prevent his rebellious plans. Initially, the couple enjoyed a period of happiness, but Ngo Nhat Khanh secretly harbored ambitions against the royal court.

About ten years later, upon receiving a letter from the North, Ngo Nhat Khanh requested permission from the king to travel with his wife to Ai Chau by water, accompanied by warships. During the journey, he revealed his plan to seek help from the Champa king in order to seize the throne and overthrow the Dinh dynasty. Princess Phat Kim persistently urged her husband to abandon this plan, advising him to live peacefully and not commit acts that would bring guilt for filial and loyal failures.

Instead of heeding her advice, Ngo Nhat Khanh became enraged, shouting:

Your father has deceived and oppressed my family. How could I, out of affection for your house, forget all the crimes of your father? You may return, but I will continue on my path.

He did not stop at words; he coldly and brutally slashed his wife’s cheek. This act marked the climax of betrayal, destroying both the princess’s beauty and her trust in her husband.

After the assault, Phat Kim was brought back to Hoa Lu for treatment, but although her physical wound healed, the emotional trauma never subsided. Overwhelmed by shame and despair, she chose to shave her head and become a nun at Nhat Tru Pagoda, north of the Hoa Lu citadel. This tragedy culminated in her eventual suicide at the Vong Nguyet tower, northwest of Hoa Lu.

The tragedy intensified in 979, when King Dinh Tien Hoang and Nam Viet Vuong Dinh Lien were assassinated by the rebel Do Thich. Le Hoan, along with Empress Duong Van Nga, assumed regency, while Ngo Nhat Khanh and the Champa king led over a thousand naval ships to attack Dai Co Viet, only to be drowned by a storm. Overcome with grief and despair, Princess Phat Kim leapt into the well at Vong Nguyet tower to end her life; the 10th day of the 3rd lunar month is observed as her memorial day. She is revered as a gentle, loyal, and enduring woman of the 10th century, worshipped at the Phat Kim Princess Temple (also called Thuc Tiet Princess Temple or Phu Ba Chua) within the Hoa Lu ancient capital complex, Ninh Binh.

Veneration

The commemoration and worship of Princess Phat Kim are centered on the Phat Kim Princess Temple in the Hoa Lu ancient capital, Ninh Binh, where she is honored for her loyalty, virtue, and chastity. Shortly after her suicide to preserve her virtue, the local people built a temple in her memory at Tam Ky village, Truong Yen commune, Hoa Lu district, on the site of the Vong Nguyet palace where the princess once lived. The front yard of the temple preserves a hexagonal well believed to be the site of her suicide, creating a tangible historical trace closely associated with her tragic life.

Princess Phat Kim is venerated as a virtuous and loyal woman of the 10th century who endured many life hardships. This reverence is reflected in her title, ancestral tablet, the main inscription, and couplets within the temple. The ancestral tablet bears the inscription Thuc Tiet cong chua than vi (淑節公主神位), emphasizing her chastity and loyalty. The main hall displays the large inscription De nu tu (帝女子) and couplets praising her moral integrity:

Mot tam long son, khi at Nam Chiem van dam / Nhu vang hai chu, ten luu Co Viet muon nam

(“A heart of loyalty, spirit surpassing Nam Chiem a thousand miles / Golden milk with two characters, name remembered in Co Viet forever”)

This testifies to her loyalty and indomitable spirit, which transcended personal tragedy to become a moral exemplar.

The temple’s architecture follows the Dinh-style layout, comprising the Front Hall and Rear Sanctuary. The Front Hall has three bays with southern-style tiled roofs, housing incense tables for officials and the White Tiger deity, decorated according to Nguyen-era aesthetics. The Rear Sanctuary is the main worship area, featuring a statue of Princess Phat Kim seated with legs in the five-character posture, head adorned with flowers, eyes gazing forward with a benevolent expression, flanked by two attendant statues. The temple has undergone multiple restorations, most recently during the Nguyen dynasty, retaining its original cultural and artistic value.

Worship practices are linked to the traditional Hoa Lu Festival, held annually from the 9th to 11th days of the 3rd lunar month, with the 10th day marking the princess’s memorial. During the festival, rituals such as water procession, fire procession, opening of ceremonial codes, and incense offerings are conducted at surrounding relics, including the Phat Kim Temple, attracting officials, ceremonial delegations, and pilgrims. Even outside the festival, locals often visit the temple to offer incense and prayers, demonstrating respect and remembrance for the princess’s moral integrity.

Honoring Princess Phat Kim through the Thuc Tiet Princess Temple establishes a firm historical landmark amidst turbulent history, eternally commemorating her sacrifice, loyalty, and virtue (Thuc Tiet), ensuring that future generations remember the exemplary character of a 10th-century woman who endured great tragedy.
