Name and Geographical Location

The tomb of King Le Tuc Tong is located in Hamlet No. 1, Kien Tho Commune, Ngoc Lac District, Thanh Hoa Province. The tomb forms part of the Lam Kinh historical complex, which has been officially recognized as a Special National Relic Site.

Historical Background and the Figure of King Le Tuc Tong

King Le Tuc Tong was the third son of King Le Hien Tong. His mother was Empress Dowager Trang Thuan Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hoan, a native of Hung Yen Province. The king’s personal name was Le Thuan, born on the first day of the eighth lunar month in the 19th year of the Hong Duc era (1488). From a very young age, he was chosen as the heir apparent. In 1491, at only three years old, Le Thuan was formally invested as Crown Prince by his father. This early appointment reflects the special trust placed by the court in his innate qualities and his role in the succession order of the Later Le dynasty.

In the seventh lunar month of 1504, following the death of King Le Hien Tong, Crown Prince Le Thuan ascended the throne, adopting the reign title Thai Trinh, and became the eighth emperor of the Later Le dynasty. However, the reign of Le Tuc Tong was exceptionally brief.

Despite his short time on the throne, Le Tuc Tong was highly regarded by contemporary historians and later generations for his personal virtues and vision of governance. Dai Viet Su Ky Toan Thu describes him as “intelligent from childhood, widely read and deeply knowledgeable, benevolent, eager to learn, and respectful of the worthy.” These records depict a young monarch who demonstrated early maturity, a strong sense of responsibility, and a serious attitude toward state affairs and society.

During his brief reign, Le Tuc Tong pursued a policy of leniency and stability, continuing the governing principles established under Le Thanh Tong and Le Hien Tong. He emphasized the revision of laws, reduction of taxes, and limitation of corvée labor in order to stabilize the lives of the people and preserve the peaceful legacy built by previous rulers. He also showed clear respect for talented officials, maintained close relations with senior and reputable mandarins, and avoided allowing power to fall into the hands of court factions or palace cliques—issues that had caused considerable turmoil in Vietnamese feudal history.

In addition, Le Tuc Tong was known for his inclination toward Buddhism. He frequently read Buddhist scriptures, reflected on moral principles, and sponsored the construction of pagodas and towers as well as the carving of Buddha statues, aspiring to foster a compassionate and harmonious society. This tendency reflects the ethical and humanistic mindset of a young ruler in the context of the continued coexistence of Buddhist and Confucian thought in early sixteenth-century Dai Viet.

Because of his premature death, Le Tuc Tong’s reforms and plans could not be fully implemented. Nevertheless, historical records indicate that he was regarded as a ruler capable of preserving the dynasty’s foundations, inclined toward virtuous governance, respectful of the worthy, and clearly conscious of a monarch’s responsibilities. Within the historical flow of the Later Le dynasty, Le Tuc Tong is therefore often viewed as a special case: a short-lived king who nevertheless left a positive image, revealing the potential of an enlightened ruler had he been granted a longer reign.

The king fell seriously ill and passed away after just over six months on the throne, on the twelfth day of the first lunar month in 1505, at the age of seventeen. In the third lunar month of the same year, his coffin was escorted to Tay Kinh (Lam Kinh) for burial at Kinh Lang, located on a gently sloping hillside to the east of the Lam Kinh central area. Having no heirs, he designated his second elder brother Le Tuan to succeed him, who became King Le Uy Muc, thereby ushering in a dark period in the history of the Early Le dynasty.

Architectural Layout and Landscape

The tomb complex of King Le Tuc Tong is arranged with a clearly defined spatial layout, consistent with royal mausoleum planning concepts of the Later Le period. The entire site occupies an isolated low hill, characterized by a tranquil setting with minimal impact from surrounding residential activities. The tomb lies approximately 500 meters from the residential area of Kien Tho Commune (Ngoc Lac District, Thanh Hoa Province) and more than 3 kilometers from the central area of the Lam Kinh Special National Relic Site, creating a solemn and secluded landscape in keeping with the traditional concept of a “quiet sacred ground.”

Overall, the complex is enclosed by a solid perimeter wall, defining the ritual and burial space while clearly separating it from the surrounding natural environment. The ground plan is divided into two main components—the burial area and the stele pavilion—spaced about 50 meters apart, in accordance with the longitudinal axis and hierarchical spatial organization typical of Le dynasty imperial mausoleums.

The surrounding landscape is designed in a naturalized manner, with long-standing trees forming a soft ecological buffer. This dense vegetation provides both physical protection and a serene, contemplative atmosphere, emphasizing the sacred nature of the burial site. The combination of gently sloping terrain and greenery gives the mausoleum a modest, harmonious appearance, distinct from the more monumental and highly ceremonial tombs of later periods.

Along the approach axis and around the burial area stands a system of stone sculptures, including animal figures and attendant statues, meticulously carved and symmetrically arranged. Despite centuries of weathering, these sculptures retain stable forms and balanced compositions, clearly demonstrating the characteristics of early Le court stone carving: solid massing, robust posture, restrained yet precise lines, creating an atmosphere of dignity without ostentation.

The stele pavilion is separated from the main tomb and positioned on elevated ground approximately 50 meters away. It serves as the symbolic and historical focal point of the complex. Inside stands a monolithic stone stele inscribed with the biography and reign of King Le Tuc Tong. The pavilion’s layout is solemn and focused on the stele text, reflecting the architectural principle of “content-centered design” typical of royal commemorative structures.

The main tomb itself is a square-shaped earthen mound of relatively modest size compared to other royal tombs at Lam Kinh. It is surrounded by frangipani trees, which carry both Buddhist–Confucian symbolic meanings and soften the architectural space. Originally, the tomb was severely damaged, leaving only traces of thin brick courses around the mound. In 1997, after surveys confirmed its location, the tomb was restored using brick masonry with an outer cement coating. The restored dimensions are 4.50 meters in length, 4.50 meters in width, and 1 meter in height. The restoration preserved the traditional mound form and avoided deep intervention into the original structure.

Overall, the architectural and landscape design of Kinh Lang clearly reflects the defining features of Later Le imperial tombs: moderate scale, compact layout, an emphasis on harmony with nature, and inherent solemnity. Rather than projecting overt power, Kinh Lang embodies a restrained architectural philosophy, consistent with the brief reign yet highly esteemed moral character of King Le Tuc Tong.

Artifacts

The Dai Viet Lam Son Kinh Lang Stele is the most important artifact at Kinh Lang and belongs to the Lam Kinh Special National Relic Complex. Erected concurrently with the tomb of King Le Tuc Tong nearly 500 years ago, the stele stands on an elevated earthen mound facing southeast, approximately 100 meters from the tomb area and about 4 kilometers east of the Lam Kinh central site. Historically, this area belonged to Giao Xa Village, Thuy Nguyen District; today it lies within Kien Tho Commune, Ngoc Lac District, Thanh Hoa Province.

In Le dynasty historical records, Le Tuc Tong is regarded as the ruler who marked the end of the prosperous phase of the Early Le dynasty. After his death, Dai Viet’s court gradually declined under King Le Uy Muc, whose reign was marked by decadence and tyranny. This assessment is indirectly reflected in the laudatory tone and content of the Kinh Lang stele inscription.

The inscription is entirely carved in Classical Chinese, using formal regular script. It consists of approximately 47 lines and nearly 1,500 characters, primarily praising the king’s virtues and achievements. The text was composed by four contemporary doctoral laureates—Dam Van Le, Nguyen Nhan Thiep, Pham Thinh, and Trinh Chi Sam—demonstrating the political and ideological significance of the stele within the royal ritual and commemorative system.

At the beginning of the inscription, the authors invoke exemplary ancient Chinese sage-kings such as Yao, Shun, and Cheng Tang, placing Le Tuc Tong within a Confucian moral–political framework. The text then portrays the king as innately intelligent, filial, benevolent, and proper in his conduct toward civil and military officials, thereby establishing a stable, disciplined, and upright court. He is praised as a ruler who upheld norms, governed effectively, inherited the way of the sages, and laid moral foundations for future generations.

Notably, the inscription records a series of humane and reform-oriented policies enacted shortly after his accession: granting amnesty, releasing palace women, suspending nonessential projects, reducing taxes, limiting forced labor, and cutting down tribute obligations—demonstrating a people-centered approach to governance. At the same time, the inscription adopts a tone of deep lament over the king’s short lifespan, describing his early death as a loss mourned by “heaven, earth, and all living beings.”

From literary and historiographical perspectives, the Kinh Lang stele text can be regarded as a laudatory historical essay, written in a combination of parallel prose and narrative prose, employing precise classical allusions, restrained language, concise expression, rich symbolism, and orthodox Confucian style.

In terms of craftsmanship, the Kinh Lang stele weighs approximately 13 tons and consists of both the stele body and a turtle pedestal, all carved from single blocks of stone using traditional manual techniques. The rectangular stele body measures 2.6 meters in height, 1.8 meters in width, and 0.29 meters in thickness. The turtle pedestal below measures 3.3 meters in length, 2.95 meters in width, and 0.43 meters in height, displaying a robust and balanced form.

The stele’s pediment is arched and divided into three decorative panels, each carved with a dragon motif. The central dragon is the largest, depicted coiled in the shape of the character Vuong (king), with a beast-like face and clearly defined five claws. The two flanking dragons are carved in the “returning dragon” style, with sinuous bodies, raised heads, and open mouths, facing toward the central dragon. The background is filled with stylized flame and cloud motifs, creating a dynamic and sacred visual effect.

The border decorations are intricately executed: the central border features a sun motif with six flame blades, flanked by four dragons; the side borders on each side display six ascending dragons; and the bottom border shows four symmetrical dragons. These borders are separated by parallel moldings, forming a tightly organized composition with a clear visual rhythm.

The turtle pedestal is carved in the soft-shell turtle style, with a plump, powerful body symbolizing durability and longevity. The turtle is shown with its head raised as if in motion; the shell is left plain, with the stele erected directly upon it. The legs are carved with five small, discreet claws, and the tail is softly modeled and tucked neatly behind the shell.

Today, the stele body remains relatively intact, but the turtle pedestal has suffered severe damage, with most of the head missing. Due to the limestone material and the effects of time, many lines of the inscription have become eroded and blurred, posing challenges for research and conservation.

Owing to its outstanding historical, artistic, and technical value, in January 2020 the Dai Viet Lam Son Kinh Lang Stele was officially recognized as a National Treasure. It is the fifth national treasure at Lam Kinh, following the steles of Vinh Lang, Chieu Lang, Du Lang, and Khon Nguyen Chi Duc, further affirming Lam Kinh’s status as a site of exceptional national heritage significance.

According to assessments by scholars and the Lam Kinh Heritage Management Board, the Kinh Lang stele is not only a stone sculpture of high artistic merit but also a rare and invaluable source for the study of Vietnamese history, political thought, and decorative art of the sixteenth century.

Classification

Kinh Lang is part of the Lam Kinh historical complex, which was officially designated a Special National Relic Site by decision of the Prime Minister of Vietnam on September 27, 2012.
