Phuong My Pagoda (Hai Phong)
Geographical Location and Name
Phuong My Pagoda, whose formal name is Ngoc Hoa Tu, is located in Phuong My village, My Dong commune, Thuy Nguyen district, Hai Phong city. Phuong My is an ancient land, known as the birthplace of Pham Quang, a trusted general of Le Hoan, who made significant contributions to victories against the Song dynasty in the 10th century.
\During the Hung Kings period, this area was known as Hoa Kieu hamlet; under the Ly dynasty (1010–1225), Hoa Kieu was renamed Hoa Chuong. During the reign of King Dong Khanh of the Nguyen dynasty (1885–1888), it was officially designated Phuong My commune, Thai Lai canton, Thuy Duong district, Kinh Mon prefecture, Hai Duong province.
History and Historical Figures
According to legend, the initial foundation of Phuong My Pagoda was merely a small thatched hermitage financed by Pham Quang. Over time, together with the development of the village community and the growing religious needs of the population, the pagoda was gradually expanded, restored, and rebuilt into a more spacious and dignified structure.
During the Tran dynasty, when the Truc Lam Zen lineage flourished and exerted deep influence, Phuong My Pagoda became one of the most representative ancient monastic centers of this Zen tradition in the former Thuy Duong region. However, during the resistance war against French colonialism, the ancient pagoda was completely destroyed by enemy forces, causing profound loss and regret among local residents.
From early 1945, Phuong My Pagoda became a regular site for communication and meetings, as well as a storage place for many important documents of the Viet Minh. After the event of 9 March 1945, when Japan overthrew French colonial rule, and in response to the Central Party Standing Committee’s call under the slogan “The Japanese and the French fight each other, and our action,” the revolutionary movement in Thuy Nguyen district developed vigorously, attracting broad participation from all social strata. In this context, Phuong My Pagoda continued to serve as one of the key leadership centers of the district’s revolutionary movement, while actively participating in rice and grain donations to relieve the famine that struck in early 1945.
As the revolutionary movement expanded, many villages and communes in Thuy Nguyen established National Salvation Self-Defense units. Notably, at Phuong My Pagoda emerged the “National Salvation Sangha Platoon,” a unique armed force that clearly expressed the socially engaged spirit of Buddhism in the cause of national salvation. The platoon’s headquarters was located at Hoang Pha Pagoda (Hoang Dong commune) and was commanded by Luong Ngoc Tru. He was a patriotic monk who, enlightened by Hoang Ngoc Luong, became a revolutionary fighter. Under Luong Ngoc Tru’s leadership, the platoon closely coordinated with self-defense forces throughout the district, actively participated in eliminating reactionary elements, protecting revolutionary cadres, and mobilizing the people to oppose the Japanese fascists’ grain requisitions. Later, Luong Ngoc Tru joined frontline combat and heroically sacrificed his life on the Tien Lang battlefield in 1953; he was posthumously awarded the First-Class Resistance Medal by the State.
Following Japan’s coup against France, the revolutionary movement nationwide intensified, leading to the formation of seven major resistance zones, including the Fourth Dong Trieu War Zone (Tran Hung Dao War Zone). In the process of establishing this war zone, Phuong My Pagoda made important contributions. In April 1945, the pagoda hosted a meeting between Nguyen Phuong Thao (later known as Lieutenant General Nguyen Binh) and Nguyen Kien Tranh (also known as Monk Tue), to discuss unifying forces and formulating plans for the establishment of the Tran Hung Dao War Zone.
By June 1945, the war zone was officially established in Dong Trieu, becoming a crucial revolutionary base in the northeastern region of Northern Vietnam, later expanding its activities to Kien An, Hai Phong, Quang Yen, Hon Gai, and beyond, linking with the Viet Bac Liberation Zone. From this point onward, Phuong My Pagoda served as a site for storing documents, stockpiling weapons, and assembling armed forces of the Dong Trieu War Zone as well as the upland self-defense units of Thuy Nguyen district.
Amid the rapid development of the local revolutionary movement, Nguyen Quang Tao, the district prefect, gradually became sympathetic to the revolution. He personally came to Phuong My Pagoda to ask Monk Luong Ngoc Tru to help arrange contact with Viet Minh cadres, thereby expressing his intention to submit and support the revolutionary cause.
On 10 August 1945, at Ngoc Hoa Pagoda, a special envoy of the Hai Phong Mayor arrived to request a meeting with Dong Trieu War Zone Commander Nguyen Binh to discuss coordination in bringing revolutionary armed forces into Hai Phong to seize power. Subsequently, on 15 August 1945, under arrangements by the Thuy Nguyen Viet Minh, Nguyen Binh traveled by motorboat from Quang Yen to Kien Wharf (Kien Bai commune) to meet Hai Phong Mayor Vu Trong Khanh, where they agreed that once conditions were ripe, the war zone’s armed forces would advance into Hai Phong to take power.
After the success of the August Revolution in 1945, exploiting the pretext of Allied disarmament of Japanese troops, more than 200,000 Chinese Nationalist troops entered northern Vietnam; a large contingent was stationed at the headquarters of the Provisional Revolutionary Committee in Trinh Xa Prefectural Office (Thien Huong commune). In accordance with government policy in October 1945, the Provisional Revolutionary Committee of Thuy Nguyen district relocated its headquarters to Phuong My Pagoda to continue directing and leading revolutionary activities throughout the district.
Notably, on 25 December 1945, at Phuong My Pagoda, Hoang Ngoc Luong, Pham Van Duyet, Bui Ba Ngon, and Pham Van Ngu were admitted to the Communist Party of Vietnam. Also here, the Thuy Nguyen District Party Cell was officially established, with Hoang Long as its Secretary, marking an important milestone in the development of the local revolutionary movement. In early 1946, Phuong My Pagoda continued to host the conference establishing the Thuy Nguyen National Salvation Sangha Association, reaffirming the pagoda’s special role in both religious life and revolutionary history of Thuy Nguyen district.
Architecture, Landscape, and Relics
The current architectural structures of Phuong My Pagoda were reconstructed in 1992 by mobilizing the collective efforts and resources of local authorities and residents on the original site. Subsequent renovations were carried out in 2002 and 2004 to gradually complete the worship space and ensure structural durability. In early 2007, the pagoda undertook a major restoration and rebuilding of the Patriarchs’ Hall, creating a more dignified structure that enhanced the overall architectural landscape and highlighted the historical and cultural value of the entire complex. Today, Phuong My Pagoda stands as one of the most representative revolutionary historical sites of Thuy Nguyen district.
Regarding relics and antiquities, the pagoda preserves many valuable artifacts of historical and artistic significance. Most notable is the bronze bell named “Ngoc Hoa Tu Chung,” weighing over 100 kg, cast in 1829 during the reign of King Minh Mang of the Nguyen dynasty. Continuing the tradition of protecting and upholding the Three Jewels, in 2011, through the united contributions of Buddhists and local residents, the pagoda solemnly cast a great bronze bell weighing 1,000 kg. This bell has become an important ritual instrument, further enhancing the pagoda’s spiritual and cultural value.
Heritage Classification
In 2005, Phuong My Pagoda was recognized by the Hai Phong City People’s Committee as a City-level Historical Site of the Resistance War. Every year, the pagoda holds its traditional festival over two days, on the 4th and 5th days of the first lunar month. The festival consistently attracts large numbers of local residents, Buddhists, and visitors from all regions who come to offer incense and enjoy the early spring atmosphere.

Pagode Phuong My (Hai Phong)
