Quan Khai Communal House (Hai Phong)
Geographic Location and Name
The ancient Quan Khai Communal House is located in Vinh Hai commune, Hai Phong City (formerly Tien Phong commune, Vinh Bao district). It is not only a spiritual center for local residents but also a remarkable architectural and artistic monument. Quan Khai Communal House represents an integrated complex of Nguyen-dynasty architectural art from the early twentieth century. Its outstanding value lies in its grand scale, solemn antiquity, sophisticated decorative sculpture, and the valuable relics that have survived to the present day.
History and Worshipped Deities
The communal house was constructed in the thirteenth year of the Duy Tan reign (1916). Although nearly a century has passed, thanks to its inherent value and the strong preservation awareness of the local community, the structure has largely retained the distinctive features of a Vietnamese village communal house from the early twentieth century.
According to oral tradition, the construction funds were contributed by the villagers themselves, with the chief patron being Ba Phu, a respected local notable. It is said that Ba Phu of the Ngo clan, together with a group of strong young men from the village, ventured deep into the forests carrying simple provisions to purchase timber, which they then rafted back by river. Hearing that Quan Khai was building a large communal house, many renowned guilds of craftsmen applied to undertake the construction.
As a test of their professional competence, Ba Phu posed an initial question: whether the existing quantity of timber was sufficient for the construction according to the villagers’ design, and if so, how much surplus or shortage there would be. Many guilds failed this first challenge. Ultimately, the winning bid went to the Ninh Giang craftsmen’s guild (Hai Duong), who calculated that there would be exactly one ironwood log left over, to be used for making tools.
The construction process lasted nearly ten years and was completed in 1916. As predicted, the materials proved to be precisely sufficient, with only one ironwood log remaining for tool-making. This outcome demonstrated the outstanding design and organizational skills of Ba Phu and the villagers, who effectively served as the project’s master planners.
Quan Khai Communal House worships Tan Vien Thanh (Tan Vien Mountain Saint), together with his two beloved daughters of the Hung Kings, Chieu Huy and Nu Oa. The communal house preserves a Ngoc Pha (sacred genealogy) compiled by Nguyen Binh, Han Lam Vien Dong Cac Dai Hoc Si, in the first year of the Hong Phuc reign (1572). This document is an extremely valuable historical source for understanding the early periods of national foundation and defense. In particular, the Tan Vien hagiography is an important resource for studying a historical figure revered as the foremost tutelary deity of the ancient Vietnamese.
Tan Vien is venerated by the people as Duc Thanh Ca, the foremost of the “Four Immortals,” and a celebrated village tutelary deity of many Vietnamese communities, including Quan Khai village.
The life and career of the tutelary deity of Quan Khai can be summarized as follows. Toward the end of the reign of the eighteenth Hung King, when the king was advanced in age and his sons had died prematurely, leaving no heir, he intended to pass the throne to his son-in-law, Tan Vien Son Thanh. Taking advantage of this situation, Thuc Phan assembled tens of thousands of elite troops near the coast in preparation for an attack on the state of Van Lang. Upon receiving this alarming news, the Hung King consulted Tan Vien and entrusted him with command of the infantry to resist the invasion.
Tan Vien led his army to Duong Tuyen (later Hai Duong region), within the territory of Quan Khai hamlet, Vinh Lai district, Ha Hong prefecture, stationing one thousand troops there. Recognizing the area as a strategically auspicious land—described as a place where “dragons coil and tigers crouch”—he ordered soldiers and local inhabitants to establish military outposts for defense. After a period of preparation, he led his forces from Duong Tuyen to confront the Thuc army and achieved victory.
In celebration, the king held a grand banquet, promoted Tan Vien to high military rank, and granted him a landed estate at Quan Khai hamlet. According to legend, Tan Vien Thanh and his two wives—princesses, daughters of King Hung Due Vuong—passed away at Quan Khai. Thereafter, the villagers established the communal house to worship them.
Architecture and Landscape
Despite the impacts of time, war, and social change, Quan Khai Communal House has preserved many original architectural elements of exceptional value, making it a rare example within the system of village communal houses in Hai Phong. The overall architectural composition is traditional and imposing, reflecting the high technical skills and refined aesthetic sensibilities of past artisans.
The main hall (dai dinh) is of large scale, featuring six principal roofs covered with traditional mui hai tiles, combined with ten elegantly curved ridge-ends, creating a powerful and dignified silhouette. Along the ridge, decorative elements such as con kim, con so, and dau guot are finely molded in relief, serving both ornamental and symbolic protective functions for the sacred space. The roof system is harmoniously proportioned, producing a sense of rhythm that is both graceful and structurally robust.
A distinctive highlight of Quan Khai Communal House is its gate system, positioned to the east and west. Each gate is designed with two tiers and eight curved roofs, forming a complete and symmetrical ngu mon (five-gate) structure of impressive scale. With its refined and distinctive architectural form, this gate complex is regarded as one of the most beautiful and representative ngu mon communal house gates in Hai Phong City.
The interior space is organized in the chong ruong gia chieng structural style, typical of early twentieth-century Nguyen-dynasty temple and communal house architecture. Columns, beams, and purlins are all made of large ironwood timbers; some columns are so massive that an adult cannot encircle them with both arms. This structural system ensures durability while creating a lofty, solemn interior atmosphere.
The decorative carving art within the communal house reaches a highly sophisticated level, clearly demonstrating the masterful craftsmanship of traditional artisans. Architectural components such as beams, panels, cua vong, and altars are richly carved with diverse motifs, including chrysanthemum transforming into dragon, old chrysanthemum transforming into phoenix, and old bamboo transforming into dragon. These carvings are both symbolically meaningful and aesthetically refined, evoking the impression of a miniature imperial palace while remaining closely connected to folk culture.
Notably, not only the spacious front hall but also the rear sanctuary—normally a more enclosed and sacred area—is elaborately and meticulously carved. Each line and detail reflects religious devotion, aesthetic ideals, and advanced craftsmanship, contributing to the unique value of the entire monument.
In addition to architectural and material heritage, the surrounding landscape also enhances the site’s character. Two ancient kapok trees standing before the communal house gate, each over 120 years old, are regarded as symbols of fertility in folk belief and serve as “living witnesses” to the history and development of Quan Khai Communal House across generations.
Relics
At present, Quan Khai Communal House preserves 102 valuable relics, including 22 Nguyen-dynasty royal decrees, along with significant artifacts such as horizontal lacquered boards, parallel sentences, large calligraphic plaques, shrines, statues of civil and military officials, incense altars, and ceremonial thrones. These objects display strong influences of imperial court art while retaining elements of folk aesthetics, reflecting a harmonious interaction between court culture and village culture.
Festival
The village festival is held annually on the third day of the third lunar month and constitutes an important cultural and religious event for the local community. On this occasion, the large pond in front of the communal house plays a special role, providing water for the ritual bathing of the deities’ statues. This rite symbolizes prayers for favorable weather and abundant harvests, clearly reflecting the agricultural beliefs deeply rooted in village life over generations.
The festive activities take place energetically in the communal house garden, which historically served as the village’s shared space and is now the venue for traditional wrestling competitions. Strong wrestlers compete enthusiastically, attracting large crowds of villagers and visitors. In addition to wrestling, the festival includes various sports and cultural activities such as volleyball matches and community performances, creating a lively and vibrant atmosphere throughout the celebration.
Along the road leading to the communal house, multicolored festival flags are hung high among the ancient kapok trees in full crimson bloom, fluttering in the wind. These flags symbolize yin and yang and the five elements in traditional belief, and are also regarded as representations of the sun, vitality, and the human aspiration for growth and prosperity. Together with the natural scenery and festive spirit, they enhance the solemnity, sacredness, and distinctive cultural identity of the village’s traditional festival days.

Dinh Quan Khai (Hai Phong)
