Name and Geographic Location

Lang Truong Thai is the burial site of Vo Vuong Nguyen Phuc Khoat (1714–1765), also known as The Ton Hieu Vu Hoang de. He was the eighth of the nine Nguyen lords who ruled Dang Trong (Cochinchina) and is commonly referred to as Chua Vo.

The mausoleum is situated on La Khe Mountain, within La Khe Village, Huong Tho Commune, Huong Tra Town, Hue City. The site lies on the left bank of the Ta Trach River, approximately 800 meters from the riverbank and about 10.5 kilometers southwest of Hue city center in a straight-line distance.

History and Historical Figure
History of Construction and Restoration

On the 7th day of the 7th lunar month in 1765, Nguyen Phuc Khoat passed away at the age of 51. He was interred at Truong Thai Lang in La Khe Village (now part of Huong Tra Town, Hue City).

According to Kham dinh Dai Nam hoi dien su le (Ministry of Public Works, Volume 216), in 1808 under the reign of Gia Long, the court undertook the construction and restoration of 17 mausoleums of the Nguyen lords and their consorts of the previous regime. Truong Thai Lang was among the monuments renovated during this large-scale campaign.

The restoration of the Nguyen lords’ mausoleums was not merely an act of repairing ancestral tombs; it also affirmed the dynastic legitimacy of the Nguyen monarchy and expressed reverence and gratitude toward those who had laid the foundations of its political power.

Today, this is one of the Nguyen lords’ mausoleums located in a relatively secluded area with difficult access. Over time, the structure has significantly deteriorated: several sections of both the inner and outer walls have been damaged; parts of the parapets are no longer intact, and the remaining brickwork has shifted, posing risks of collapse if not timely conserved.

Historical Figure

Nguyen Phuc Khoat (1714–1765), commonly known as Chua Vo or Vu Vuong, was the eighth Nguyen lord governing Dang Trong (1738–1765). He ascended to power at a time when the Nguyen domain had achieved considerable territorial expansion and stability after more than a century of southward advancement, yet early signs of internal stagnation and division had begun to emerge.

In the early years of his reign, Nguyen Phuc Khoat demonstrated the qualities of a ruler determined to build a structured polity. He planned and expanded Phu Xuan into a large-scale political and administrative center, gradually elevating the status of the Dang Trong government. In 1744, his formal proclamation as king marked a significant transition: from a frontier domain nominally subordinate to the Le court, Dang Trong moved closer to becoming an autonomous political entity. He reorganized the administration along the model of the Six Ministries (Luc Bo), restructured the military, and standardized court rituals and attire, thereby shaping a distinct cultural and political identity for Nam Ha. Under his rule, Phu Xuan became a symbol of new authority and identity.

In foreign affairs, he pursued a flexible policy, avoiding direct confrontation with Bac Ha while maintaining stable relations with the Qing court. Notably, during interventions in Chan Lap (1753–1756, 1757), with strategic counsel from Nguyen Cu Trinh, Dang Trong forces compelled the Chan Lap court to cede several key territories in the lower Mekong region. As a result, the territory expanded to Ha Tien, Chau Doc, Sa Dec, Rach Gia, Ca Mau, and beyond, essentially completing the multi-generational southward expansion process.

However, the brilliance of this prosperous period gradually faded. In his later years, increasing extravagance and neglect of state affairs, combined with the concentration of power in the hands of the powerful mandarin Truong Phuc Loan, led to political disorder. Heavy taxation, widespread corruption, military decline, and popular discontent weakened the regime. From a foundation that had reached a peak in territorial and institutional development, the Dang Trong administration began to show deep internal fissures.

Thus, the reign of Nguyen Phuc Khoat represents both the culmination of institutional consolidation and territorial expansion to the southernmost reaches, and the incubation of internal decline that would erupt dramatically only a few years after his death.

The mausoleum stands on a high hill on the left bank of the Ta Trach River, about 500 meters from the river and approximately 10.5 kilometers southwest of Hue city center in a straight-line distance. The elevated terrain opens toward spacious rice fields in front, creating a broad ceremonial forecourt (tien an) while ensuring the solemnity and seclusion appropriate to a royal tomb complex. The main axis of the mausoleum faces north. From the foot of the hill, a system of steps leads upward to the burial area, though many sections have deteriorated over time.

Overall, the mausoleum follows the typical layout of Nguyen lords’ tombs, consisting of two enclosing walls:

Outer enclosure: circumference of 29 truong 9 thuoc 2 tac (approximately 126.8 m), with walls 6 thuoc 3 tac high (about 2.53 m), forming a solid outer defensive boundary.

Inner enclosure: circumference of 14 truong 4 thuoc 2 tac (approximately 61.2 m), with walls 5 thuoc high (about 1.45 m), defining the central sacred space where the tomb is situated.

The screen wall in front of the tomb is decorated on both sides: the front face is carved with a long ma motif, while the rear features a dragon; these carvings remain relatively well preserved, with refined and delicate lines. The screen wall behind the entrance gate is likewise decorated on both sides: the front once featured a kylin in relief (now only faint traces remain), while the rear displays a dragon motif that still retains vivid artistic qualities.

The burial mound consists of two stepped tiers:

Upper tier: 250 cm wide, 325 cm long, 28 cm high.

Lower tier: 510 cm wide, 610 cm long, 20 cm high.

This two-tiered structure creates a stable base while enhancing the solemn dimension of the burial site. An incense altar remains in front of the tomb and is relatively intact, contributing to the completeness of the ceremonial space.

Classification

Lang Truong Thai forms part of the Nguyen Hoang lords’ mausoleum complex (including Truong Co, Truong Thai, Truong Thieu, and the mausoleum of Hai Dong Quan Vuong Nguyen Phuc Dong). The complex was recognized as a National Heritage Site under Decision No. 2009/1998-QD/BVHTT dated September 26, 1998.

Niveau supérieur : largeur 250 cm, longueur 325 cm, hauteur 28 cm.

Niveau inférieur : largeur 510 cm, longueur 610 cm, hauteur 20 cm.
