Lo Son Pagoda (Phuong Cua Lo, Nghe An)
Name and Geographical Location
Lo Son Pagoda, whose Sino-Vietnamese name is Pho Am Tu, is an ancient pagoda built during the Le dynasty. According to local historical sources, the pagoda originally belonged to Van Loc village, Chan Loc district. Today, the site is located in Block 6, Nghi Tan ward, Cua Lo town, Nghe An province. Despite many historical changes and administrative adjustments over time, the pagoda has continued to be preserved by local residents as a long-standing religious space for the coastal community.
The pagoda is not very large in scale but possesses a serene and sacred atmosphere. The overall architectural layout is harmoniously integrated with the surrounding natural landscape. The pagoda stands in a scenic position, with its back leaning against Lo Son mountain and its front opening toward a spacious landscape. According to traditional feng shui concepts, a site with the orientation of “backed by a mountain and facing water” is considered an auspicious location, providing stability and sacredness to a place of worship. For this reason, Lo Son Pagoda has long served not only as a place for Buddhist worship but also as a spiritual refuge where local residents come to pray for peace and express their religious faith.
Over several centuries of existence, Lo Son Pagoda has been closely connected with the spiritual life of the coastal inhabitants of the Cua Lo region. It functions not only as a religious site but also as a venue for community cultural and ritual activities. During Buddhist festivals, the new moon and full moon days, and traditional ceremonies, local people often visit the pagoda to offer incense, pray for blessings, and commemorate their ancestors. The tranquil environment of the pagoda, combined with the natural scenery of Lo Son mountain behind it, creates a spiritual site that reflects the historical and cultural identity of this region.
History and Deities Worshipped
One of the oldest and most sacred pagodas in Nghe An province is Lo Son Pagoda, whose Sino-Vietnamese name is Pho Am Tu. According to local records, the pagoda was built during the Vinh Thinh era (1705–1719) under the reign of King Le Du Tong, during the Later Le dynasty (Le Trung Hung period). Initially, the pagoda was constructed by the inhabitants of Van Loc village on a modest scale, mainly serving as a place for Buddhist worship and community religious activities.
The pagoda is situated on a favorable site, leaning against Lo Son mountain and facing the open landscape of the coastal plains. In traditional feng shui belief, such a location provides stability and sacredness for a place of worship. As a result, the pagoda soon became an important spiritual center for local residents.
Throughout its existence, Lo Son Pagoda has undergone several restorations and expansions. According to village tradition, in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, local inhabitants contributed labor and financial resources to renovate the main hall and construct additional structures such as the tam quan gate, a stele house, and other auxiliary buildings. These restoration efforts not only reinforced the architectural structure of the pagoda but also reflected the strong attachment of the local community to Buddhist religious life.
The pagoda still preserves an ancient stone stele that records the construction and restoration of the pagoda through different historical periods. The content of this stele is also recorded in Hoan Chau Bi Ki, a collection of inscriptions gathered from ancient stone steles in the historical region of Hoan Chau. This document is a valuable historical source that helps determine the pagoda’s chronology and reflects aspects of the cultural and religious life of local inhabitants in the past.
Over time, especially during the wars of the twentieth century, parts of the pagoda were damaged. However, thanks to the efforts of local residents and later restoration campaigns, the pagoda has retained its ancient appearance and tranquil atmosphere. Today, Lo Son Pagoda continues to serve not only as a place of religious practice for Buddhists but also as a cultural monument closely associated with the spiritual life of the people of the Cua Lo region.
With a history of more than three centuries, Lo Son Pagoda has become one of the representative ancient pagodas of Nghe An province, embodying both spiritual significance and the long-standing cultural and religious traditions of the local community.
Architectural Landscape
The architectural complex of the pagoda consists of several principal components, including the tam quan gate, the courtyard, the main hall, and auxiliary structures. The main hall follows the traditional three-compartment house style, with a tiled roof and a wooden frame structure. Its internal framework features a simple yet solid system of beams and rafters. Inside the hall, the space is solemnly arranged with Buddha statues and altars according to Buddhist ritual practices. Although the architecture is not monumental, it possesses an ancient and rustic character appropriate for the tranquil atmosphere of a village pagoda.
The pagoda grounds are surrounded by large ancient trees and natural vegetation from the Lo Son mountain area. The tall tree canopies provide shade throughout the year, creating a quiet and fresh environment. From the courtyard, visitors can observe the surrounding natural landscape, including mountains, fields, and further in the distance the coastal area of Cua Lo. The harmonious combination of architectural structures and natural scenery creates a serene spiritual environment, making the pagoda an important destination for local residents as well as pilgrims and visitors from many regions.
Thanks to its favorable location and picturesque scenery, Lo Son Pagoda is not only a Buddhist worship site but also a scenic landmark that reflects the cultural identity of the Cua Lo region. Over many centuries, the pagoda’s architectural form and landscape have retained their ancient character, contributing to the historical and spiritual value of this cultural monument.
Festival
Every year, the Lo Son Pagoda Festival is held on the full moon of the fourth lunar month and the full moon of the seventh lunar month. These are important occasions in both Buddhist practice and traditional folk beliefs, attracting many monks, nuns, Buddhist followers, and visitors from different places to make pilgrimages. During these days, the pagoda becomes solemn yet vibrant as people gather to offer incense, pray, and participate in cultural and religious activities.
The ceremonial part of the festival takes place in a solemn and reverent atmosphere. Major rituals include incense offerings, chanting of Buddhist scriptures, prayers for national prosperity and social peace, and prayers for the well-being of families and villages.
Particularly during the full moon of the fourth lunar month, associated with Buddha’s Birthday, the Buddha bathing ritual is performed ceremonially, symbolizing spiritual purification and encouraging people to cultivate virtuous living. On the full moon of the seventh lunar month, rituals for the repose of souls, prayers for peace, and the floating of lanterns on the water are also conducted. These rituals symbolize wishes for safety and happiness for all families and express compassion for all sentient beings.
In addition to the religious ceremonies, the festive activities of Lo Son Pagoda Festival also create a joyful atmosphere that strengthens community bonds. Local residents and visitors not only participate in spiritual rituals but also enjoy sightseeing, appreciating the natural scenery, and engaging in traditional cultural exchanges. During festival days, the pagoda becomes lively while still maintaining its inherent tranquility.
Visitors to Lo Son Pagoda can offer incense to the Buddha while also enjoying the picturesque natural scenery of the Lo Son mountain region. The site is renowned not only for its sacred atmosphere but also for the harmonious combination of mountains and the surrounding coastal village landscape. In this quiet setting, many people find a sense of inner peace, as if temporarily leaving behind the worries of daily life. With a history of several hundred years, Lo Son Pagoda is now recognized as one of the representative ancient pagodas of Nghe An province, reflecting the deep cultural and religious heritage of the Cua Lo region.

Pagode Lo Son (Phuong Cua Lo, Nghe An)
