Name and Geographic Location

Tho Thap Communal House is located at No. 1, Alley 37 Dich Vong Street, Dich Vong Ward, Cau Giay District—now Cau Giay Ward, Hanoi. Together with Bao Thap Pagoda, the communal house forms a complex of religious and spiritual monuments situated on the ancient site known as Ke Vong, belonging to Trung hamlet of the former Dich Vong village.

According to traditional Vietnamese belief, this communal house–pagoda complex is arranged in the layout known as “tien Than, hau Phat” (deity in front, Buddha behind), meaning that the communal house dedicated to the village tutelary deity stands in the front while the pagoda devoted to the Buddha is located behind it. This arrangement reflects the cultural characteristics of religious belief among residents of the Northern Delta, where the worship of village tutelary deities and Buddhism coexist and complement one another within the spiritual life of the community.

History and Historical Figures

Tho Thap Communal House is dedicated to two tutelary deities of the village: Chu Ly and Trieu Chi Thanh. According to folk legends and the divine genealogies preserved at the communal house, the ancient land of Ke Vong once served as an important area during the early struggles against foreign invasion in Vietnamese history. It was here that the two generals Chu Ly and Trieu Chi Thanh recruited soldiers and gathered forces to participate in resistance wars against northern invaders.

According to tradition, the two men were generals who continued the cause of Ly Bon, the leader of the uprising against the domination of the Liang Dynasty in the mid-sixth century. After the establishment of the Van Xuan state, resistance forces continued fighting against northern invading powers. In that context, Chu Ly and Trieu Chi Thanh were regarded as talented commanders who helped organize military forces, defend the region, and sustain the spirit of resistance among the people.

In local folk belief, Chu Ly Dai Vuong is honored as a deity who made great contributions by recruiting volunteers, leading the people in battle, and protecting the inhabitants of Ke Vong village. Trieu Chi Thanh Dai Vuong, on the other hand, is remembered as a general renowned for his military talent and loyalty, credited with numerous achievements in wars against foreign invaders. After their deaths, the people commemorated their merits and worshipped them as the village tutelary deities, protectors of the local community.

At Tho Thap Communal House, two royal decrees issued during the Nguyen Dynasty are still preserved, recognizing and honoring the merits of these two tutelary deities. These decrees constitute important historical documents demonstrating the recognition of local deity worship by the imperial court.

Over many centuries of existence, Tho Thap Communal House has undergone several repairs and restorations. However, on December 8, 2018, due to negligence in fire prevention and control, a fire broke out at the communal house. Although no casualties occurred, the main hall collapsed and many ritual objects and architectural components were destroyed.

Following this event, from 2019 to 2022 the Party Committee and the People’s Committee of Dich Vong Ward implemented two large-scale restoration and conservation projects for the monument. The projects included the reconstruction of the main communal hall, overall restoration of the monument complex, completion of the interior of the main hall, renovation of the auxiliary house and caretaker’s house with kitchen, construction of sanitation facilities, a flagpole, a pump house and fire-prevention water tank, restoration of the votive-burning pavilion, construction of a screen wall, upgrading of technical infrastructure, relocation of the transformer station, and construction of a storage house for architectural components. The total investment for the project was approximately 28 billion VND.

After the restoration and reconstruction process, the monument regained its dignified and orderly appearance and continues to serve as a familiar cultural and spiritual gathering place for local residents. Today, Tho Thap Communal House is not only a site for worshiping the two tutelary deities but also a space preserving the historical memory and cultural traditions of the Ke Vong – Dich Vong region.

Architectural Landscape

Tho Thap Communal House lies within a heritage complex consisting of the communal house and Bao Thap Pagoda, constructed on the ancient site of Ke Vong belonging to the former Dich Vong village. The overall layout follows the traditional principle of “tien Than, hau Phat” (deity in front, Buddha behind), in which the communal house in front is dedicated to the village tutelary deities, while the pagoda behind is devoted to Buddhist worship. This arrangement reflects the harmonious combination of folk belief and Buddhism in the spiritual life of the inhabitants of the Northern Delta.

The monument grounds are relatively spacious and open, arranged along a central axis from the entrance toward the interior, creating a solemn and balanced architectural space. From the entrance gate, a wide courtyard leads to the main communal house building. The courtyard is paved with bricks and lined with trees and auxiliary structures, forming a harmonious landscape while also providing a communal space for villagers during festivals and religious gatherings.

At the center of the complex stands the Dai Dinh (main communal hall), the most important structure within the architectural ensemble. The hall is constructed in the traditional style of northern Vietnamese communal houses, featuring a wooden frame structure, tiled roof, and a sturdy system of columns and beams. The interior is arranged solemnly with altars, lacquered horizontal boards, parallel couplets, and ritual objects, including the ceremonial throne and spirit tablets of the two village tutelary deities.

Surrounding the main hall are auxiliary structures such as the auxiliary house, the caretaker’s house with kitchen, the votive-burning pavilion, the screen wall, and the flagpole. Additional facilities serving the operation and protection of the monument include a pump house, fire-prevention water tank, and technical infrastructure systems. These structures both support religious activities and contribute to the completeness of the architectural complex.

Through many historical changes, Tho Thap Communal House has undergone several restorations. Particularly after the fire in 2018, local authorities and residents carried out a comprehensive reconstruction and improvement of the entire complex. As a result, the monument today has not only restored the dignified appearance of traditional architecture but also been improved in terms of landscape and infrastructure, better meeting the needs of cultural activities, religious practices, and community visits.

Overall, the Tho Thap Communal House – Bao Thap Pagoda complex represents a characteristic religious architectural space of the Northern Delta and preserves significant historical, cultural, and artistic values of the Dich Vong region. The harmonious combination of architecture, landscape, and spiritual elements has created a monument of notable value within the local cultural heritage system.

Artifacts

Tho Thap Communal House currently preserves many ancient artifacts of historical and artistic value, reflecting the formation of the monument as well as the long-standing religious life of the local community. These include stone steles, ceremonial thrones, and spirit tablets dedicated to the two Dai Vuong.

Among the most notable artifacts is a copy of the divine genealogy reproduced at Hung Temple in the twenty-fifth year of the Tu Duc reign (1872), recording the origins and merits of the deities worshipped at the communal house.

In addition, the communal house preserves a royal decree issued in the ninth year of the Khai Dinh reign (1924) during the Nguyen Dynasty. This decree serves as important evidence that the imperial court officially recognized and honored the village tutelary deities.

These artifacts not only provide valuable documentation for research into local historical and religious traditions but also affirm the role and position of Tho Thap Communal House in the traditional cultural life of the Dich Vong region.

Events and Festivals

Every year, a traditional festival is held at Tho Thap Communal House. This event provides an opportunity for local residents to commemorate the merits of the two tutelary deities, Chu Ly Dai Vuong and Trieu Chi Thanh, while praying for national prosperity, favorable weather, peace, and abundant livelihoods.

The festival is usually held over two days, from the eighth to the ninth day of the third lunar month, with the ninth day being the main festival day. According to village custom, every five years a grand festival is organized on a larger scale, attracting many residents from surrounding areas as well as visitors from afar.

The festival consists of two main parts: the ceremonial section and the festive section. The ceremonial part is conducted solemnly with traditional rituals such as incense offerings, sacrificial rites, and deity processions, expressing the community’s reverence for the tutelary deities who contributed to both the nation and the village.

Following the ceremonial rites is the festive section, which features lively folk games and cultural activities such as cheo singing, rope swinging, wrestling, cockfighting, Chinese chess competitions, pot-breaking games, and various other community activities. These events not only create a joyful atmosphere but also contribute to preserving the traditional cultural values of the locality.

The festival of Tho Thap Communal House carries profound educational significance, helping younger generations understand and appreciate historical traditions, fostering national pride and strengthening love for their homeland in connection with the Vietnamese tradition of nation-building and defense.

Classification

Tho Thap Communal House was recognized as a City-Level Historical, Architectural, and Artistic Monument under Decision No. 814/QD-UBND issued on February 29, 2008 by the Hanoi People’s Committee.
