Hai cột đại trụ to cao tới 4,5m. Trên xây đắp “lưỡng nghê hí cầu”, đứng trên đầu hổ phù. Hộp đèn lồng 4 phía đắp tứ linh (Long, Ly, Quy, Phượng).

Mái đình to rộng lợp ngói ri.

Bức cốn thứ ba: Mô tả cảnh 5 con rồng đang quay quần gọi là “ngũ long”.

Phiên âm: “Tân mão niên lục nguyệt sơ tứ nhật, Tân Toàn, Tân Ninh, Tây Sơn, An Trung, cộng tứ giáp đồng thụ bỏ trợ tứ đình, tự bán thượng.

Vien Dinh Communal House (Ung Hoa Commune, Hanoi)

Name and Geographic Location

Vien Dinh Communal House is located on a raised piece of land in Dinh hamlet, Ung Hoa Commune, Hanoi. This is a relatively prominent position in the area, convenient for villagers to come for religious activities and to organize community events.

History and the Deity Worshiped

According to the records in the village’s sacred genealogy book, together with the inscription carved on the inner spirit tablet placed in the throne altar, the tutelary deity worshiped at Vien Dinh Communal House is Bao Quang Cu Si, whose honorific divine title is Minh Linh Dai Vuong. According to tradition, he was a person of exceptional talent, skilled both in literature and in martial arts. Owing to his talent and merits, he was highly esteemed by the Le dynasty court, especially by King Le Thai Tong. The king granted him an official position and stipends, and also married Princess Dieu Hanh to him, demonstrating the court’s respect for a worthy and virtuous talent.

Vien Dinh Communal House faces south, a direction commonly seen in traditional Vietnamese communal house architecture, both harmonizing with feng shui principles and creating an open space. In front of the communal house is a semicircular pond, originally the remnant of an ancient river segment called Mang Giang. The village road winds around the communal house complex, forming a terrain that the ancients likened to a land dragon embracing and protecting the building.

Architectural Landscape

The communal house gate borders the village road and has three entrances. The main gate is 4 meters wide, while the two side gates are 1.1 meters wide each. Two large main pillars rise to a height of 4.5 meters. On top are decorative sculptures of “two nghê playing with a ball,” standing above tiger-faced motifs. The lantern box has four sides decorated with the Four Sacred Creatures (Dragon, Ly, Turtle, and Phoenix). The pillar bodies are square, measuring 50 cm × 50 cm and 2.6 meters high, with a bulging neck-shaped base. On both sides of the gate are the “left gate” and the “right gate.” The upper masonry structure has four curved roof corners covered with tubular tiles.

Crossing the brick-paved courtyard leads to the Dai Bai hall (the main ceremonial hall). The Dai Bai hall is an ancient, large, and imposing structure, considered the largest in the southeastern area of Ung Hoa district. Viewed as a whole, the communal house has a low profile with four curved roof corners. At both ends of the roof ridge are decorative clamps whose mouths grasp the ridge with twisted tails; in the center are two dragons bowing toward a round sun, gracefully curving. The roof edges combined with the curved corners resemble, from afar, the side of a gigantic boat. The supporting pillars raise the beams that hold the eaves, carved from entire tree trunks with stylized dragon motifs known as “long van.” The entrance consists of traditional panel doors. The large roof is covered with small flat tiles.

The Dai Bai hall is divided into five compartments and two side bays. Corresponding to this layout is a wooden structural frame with six truss sets, each consisting of four rows of columns, making a total of 24 columns. The main columns have a circumference of 1.95 meters, while the secondary columns have a circumference of 1.60 meters. Beneath them are square stone bases measuring 70 cm × 70 cm, with a circular column placed in the center, 70 cm in diameter. The truss systems in the Dai Bai hall appear in two styles: the Dinh-shaped structure and the gong-frame with double beams style. The central bay below features carved decorative motifs of traditional patterns. The decorative panels on the frame are described as follows:

First panel:

Many dragons are gathered together, joyfully playing with one another—large dragons, small dragons, intertwined together. The scene depicts a peaceful and happy life. The arrangement of dragons in pairs, such as mother and child dragons, is called “mau tu long” (mother-and-child dragons). The carving technique uses deep double-layered relief. The lines are decisive yet graceful, with round dragon bodies. The heads are small, with flat noses, bat-like ears, wide mouths, and straight whiskers and manes shaped like spear blades, with four-clawed legs. This sculptural style belongs to raised relief art of the 17th century.

Second panel:

This panel depicts a group of dragons in the clouds. The stylized clouds resemble flowing water, with lotus ponds, flowers, leaves, and creatures such as crabs and fish—known as the scene “ngu long quan thuc.” Fish and dragons appear together, sharing a prosperous and peaceful life.

Third panel:

This panel portrays five dragons gathered together, known as the “ngu long” (five dragons). A dragon family arranged in order—above and below, before and after—living in harmony and happiness. The dragons appear gentle and pleasing, with spear-like cloud patterns, slender tails, and brush-like dragon forms in the relief carving style of the 17th century.

Particularly notable here are the relief sculptures carved in high-relief form depicting the work “fairies riding dragons.” Each fairy riding a dragon in a flying posture is an artwork filled with creative intelligence. The fairies seem to have wings as they ride on the backs of dragons. Because they are sculpted in high-relief blocks, the dragons’ eyes, noses, mouths, and flattened manes are clearly visible when viewed from the front. The straight cloud-like patterns appear both structured and dreamlike, leaving viewers impressed by the skill and ingenuity of the ancient craftsmen.

The oldest truss set is found in the side bays, constructed in the Dinh-style with continuous beams. From the ridge, a wooden support holds the main beam. The Dinh-shaped truss consists of a straight beam placed perpendicular to the front beam. On both sides, the roof beams slope upward and are divided into sections with holes for placing purlins. Below is the front beam notched and inserted into a square block set on top of the main column. Extending from the main column to the secondary column is a continuous beam made from a single small tree trunk about 0.2 meters in diameter, carefully trimmed into a slender form. The beam head is mortised to fit into the split column head. The beam tip is shaped like a calf’s snout, slender along the body and gradually larger toward the end where it meets the secondary column. On the beam body are carved spiral hook patterns known as “long van,” where clouds transform into dragons. On one beam there is a line of Chinese characters recording the construction of the communal house and the allocation of work:

Transliteration: “Tan mao nien luc nguyet so tu nhat, Tan Toan, Tan Ninh, Tay Son, An Trung, cong tu giap dong thu bo tro tu dinh, tu ban thuong.

Meaning: On the 4th day of the 6th month in the year Tan Mao (1651), the four hamlets Tan Toan, Tan Ninh, Tay Son, and An Chung erected the four main pillars; the remaining work was assigned so that the Tan Ninh hamlet took responsibility for the upper half, while the lower half was handled by the Tay Nam hamlet (the four hamlets jointly constructed this communal house).

On the main beam there is also a line of Chinese characters recording the date of restoration: “Hoang Trieu Khai Dinh bat nien (1923), tue thu Quy Hoi, trong xuan dai cat nhat tu giap trung tu.”

Thus, by 1923, the four hamlets of Vien Dinh village had gathered funds and labor to renovate and restore the communal house. From these Chinese inscriptions on the beams and main beam, we know that the communal house was built from the 17th century and underwent a major restoration in the early 20th century.

On the frame, trusses, beams, and panels are carved with artistic works such as “a gathering of dragons,” “fairies riding dragons,” as well as images of nghê, elephants, horses, and dragon-horses. The four beam-ends in the central bay are intricately carved with dragon heads featuring straight and flowing whiskers and manes in the artistic style of the 17th century.

Artifacts

Vien Dinh Communal House still preserves the following objects:

  • A sacred genealogy book recording the history of the deity worshiped in the communal house, written in Chinese characters, with a stiff cover, measuring 19 cm × 13 cm.
  • Three throne altars containing spirit tablets: the central throne is large in scale with beautiful carving art; the armrests are carved with dragon heads; the base is carved with many panels of floral patterns and bands of lotus-petal motifs. The four legs are in the kneeling fish-belly style. In the center is a spirit tablet shaped like a human figure, with the head within a radiant circle of cloud, flower, and leaf patterns. On the spirit tablet is a line of Chinese characters stating: “Ban canh thanh hoang Minh Linh hiep thang can vu quoc chinh ton than lai phong la tien duc bao trung hung muon doi.”
  • One bronze bell cast during the Nguyen dynasty, in the 9th year of the reign of King Thanh Thai, in the year Dinh Dau, during the winter in the 11th month. On the bell body are four Chinese characters: “Vien Dinh than chung” — the sacred bell of Vien Dinh Communal House, donated by the local Van Hoi association.
  • Two horizontal lacquered boards (cuon thu).

Festival

Every year, the communal house festival is held on the 12th day of the eighth lunar month.
