Thông tin cơ bản

Thời gian tổ chức

Lễ vía Ngọc Hoàng được tổ chức hằng năm vào ngày mùng 9 tháng Giêng âm lịch.

Trước ngày lễ chính, vào tối mùng 8 tháng Giêng, vị hòa thượng trụ trì chùa tổ chức tụng kinh cầu an.

Trong dịp lễ vía Ngọc Hoàng, tối ngày mùng 8 tháng Giêng, nhà chùa tổ chức tụng kinh cầu an.

Time of Organization

The Jade Emperor Festival is held annually on the 9th day of the first lunar month.

On the evening of the 8th day of the first lunar month, before the main celebration, the abbot of the temple conducts chanting ceremonies to pray for peace. On the 9th day, large numbers of pilgrims from various places come to offer prayers.

In addition to this occasion, on the first and full moon days of each lunar month—especially major full moon days such as the Full Moon of the First Month, the Seventh Month, and the Tenth Month—the temple also receives a large number of visitors.

Location

The Jade Emperor Festival takes place at Ngoc Hoang Pagoda (also known as Jade Emperor Temple, now officially named Phuoc Hai Tu), located at 73 Mai Thi Luu Street, near Da Kao Market, in Da Kao Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.

Within the temple courtyard are two ponds for fish and turtles, a shrine dedicated to the Dharma Protector, and an octagonal pavilion sheltering a large incense burner made of cement with a bronze-like finish, where pilgrims offer incense before entering and after leaving the temple.

Ngoc Hoang Pagoda was first constructed in 1892, initiated by a Chinese man named Luu Minh.

By 1900, the main construction was completed, and the inauguration ceremony was held in 1906.

Originally named Ngoc Hoang Dien, the French at the time commonly referred to it as Da Kao Pagoda. In 1982, the temple joined the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha under the leadership of Venerable Thich Vinh Khuong and was officially renamed Phuoc Hai Tu, although it is still widely known as Ngoc Hoang Pagoda.

The temple currently houses more than 300 statues arranged across three main halls. The central hall is dedicated to heavenly generals and the Jade Emperor. It also features a statue of the Medicine Buddha made of agarwood, displayed in a glass case, along with life-sized statues of the generals Thanh Long and Phuc Ho. Additionally, there are altars dedicated to Chuan De Bodhisattva and the Northern Deity (Huyen Vo/Tran Vo).

Rituals (Ceremonial Section)

During the Jade Emperor Festival, on the evening of the 8th day of the first lunar month, the temple organizes chanting ceremonies for peace and well-being.

On the 9th day, a large number of pilgrims from various regions come to the temple to offer incense, pray, and pay their respects. Visitors include both the Chinese-Vietnamese community and Vietnamese people living in the city and nearby areas.

Throughout the day, incense smoke fills the temple grounds. Hundreds of thousands of visitors take turns entering the main hall to pray for peace, prosperity, and good fortune in the new year.

Festival Activities (Festive Section)

The Jade Emperor Festival is primarily a religious and pilgrimage event, with few traditional games or folk performances.

However, during this occasion, the temple becomes especially lively. Pilgrims from many places gather to worship, creating a festive yet solemn atmosphere. Among the religious sites of the Chinese community in Ho Chi Minh City, Ngoc Hoang Pagoda is considered one of the most popular destinations for both worshippers and visitors.

Today, Ngoc Hoang Pagoda remains one of the most prominent folk religious sites of the Chinese community in Ho Chi Minh City and a familiar destination for pilgrims as well as domestic and international tourists.
