Dinh Ngo (Nam Xang Commune, Ninh Binh Province)
Location and Name
Dinh Ngo is a historical–cultural monument with an age of more than 700 years, closely associated with the formation and development of Ngo Village over many centuries. The communal house is currently located on a relatively large site of about 2,000 m², situated in the central area of Ngo Village, which formerly belonged to Duc Ly Commune, Ly Nhan District, Ha Nam Province. Due to changes in administrative boundaries over different periods, this area today belongs to Nam Xang Commune, Ninh Binh Province. Because it stands at the center of the village, the communal house is not only convenient for local people to conduct religious activities but also serves as a shared space where many cultural activities, festivals, and village meetings have taken place from the past up to the present.
The name Dinh Ngo derives directly from the name of Ngo Village, an ancient settlement with a long history in the Red River Delta region. In the tradition of Vietnamese villages, communal houses are often named after the village itself to demonstrate the close relationship between the architectural structure and the local community. Therefore, the communal house is not merely a building but also a spiritual symbol of the entire village, preserving historical memories, customs, and the cultural identity of local residents across many generations.
Formation History and Deities Worshiped
According to ancient documents preserved at the communal house, the land on which Dinh Ngo stands had long been regarded as a site with a favorable location, harmonizing natural features and feng shui. In traditional belief, it was considered a place where spiritual energy and blessings converge, bringing prosperity and good fortune to the village community. For this reason, when the village was established and communal religious institutions were built, local residents selected this location to construct the communal house as the center of the village’s spiritual and administrative life. The choice of this site was not based solely on convenience but also on the belief that it would protect the villagers, ensure good harvests, and provide long-term stability.
The communal house currently worships three distinguished generals from the Tran Dynasty who made significant contributions to the nation’s history. According to the genealogy records, the three figures were originally from the Tay and Nung ethnic groups, originating from Quang Lang settlement in Chau On, Truong Khanh Prefecture—an area corresponding today to Chi Lang District in Lang Son Province. This frontier region has long been known for its martial tradition and strong warrior spirit, producing many talented generals during the wars to defend the country. The three figures were honored by the local people as the village tutelary deities because they were not only skilled military leaders but also individuals of noble character—upright, loyal, proficient in both civil and military matters, and always placing the interests of the nation above all else.
In the thirteenth century, when the Yuan–Mongol forces repeatedly invaded Dai Viet, the country faced enormous challenges. In that context, the three generals mobilized troops, gathered forces in their local area, and responded to the call of the Tran royal court. They participated in many campaigns during the resistance wars against the Yuan–Mongol armies, together with the people and military of Dai Viet achieving numerous remarkable victories. These contributions not only helped defend national independence but also left a deep imprint on the historical memory of the people. After their deaths, their merits were recognized by the royal court, and the people established temples to worship them permanently. For the people of Ngo Village, the three figures are not only historical heroes but also protective deities who watch over and support the village across generations.
Beyond its association with medieval history, Dinh Ngo also played an important role during the modern revolutionary struggles of the nation. During the resistance war against French colonialism and later the resistance war against the United States, the communal house became a secret operational location and a reliable revolutionary base of the locality. Many important meetings between cadres and local residents were held here, where revolutionary policies and guidelines of the grassroots Party organization were disseminated, while the people were mobilized to participate in resistance movements. Thanks to its favorable location and the protection of local residents, Dinh Ngo contributed significantly to maintaining the revolutionary movement in the locality during difficult periods.
Up to the present day, within the precinct of the communal house there remain traces associated with notable revolutionary events. These traces serve as vivid evidence of patriotism, solidarity, and the contributions made by local residents to the overall victory of the nation during the resistance wars.
According to remaining historical and architectural records, Dinh Ngo was constructed during the Le period and later underwent several restorations and renovations across different periods. Despite the impacts of time, wars, and natural disasters, the communal house has preserved the basic features of traditional architecture, particularly the artistic style characteristic of the Later Le period. The combination of long-standing historical value, spiritual significance, and its role in revolutionary periods has made Dinh Ngo a monument of special importance to the local community as well as to the study of history and culture in the Northern Delta region.
Architectural Landscape
Dinh Ngo is an ancient architectural structure that represents the typical style of communal houses in the Northern Delta, especially reflecting the architectural style of the Later Le period. The overall structure is quite spacious and harmonizes with the surrounding rural landscape, appearing both solemn and closely connected to the daily life of local residents. From a distance, the curved roof of the communal house rises gracefully at the corners, creating an ancient and dignified appearance while clearly reflecting the construction techniques and traditional aesthetics of the Vietnamese people in the past.
The front hall of the communal house consists of five compartments and is relatively large in scale. The building has a total length of about 18.5 meters and a width of nearly 9.9 meters, forming a spacious area used for ritual ceremonies and community activities. The architectural structure of the front hall mainly uses a system of large wooden columns connected by horizontal beams and sturdy trusses. The characteristic curved roof style of Later Le communal houses not only allows efficient drainage in the rainy climate of Northern Vietnam but also gives the entire structure a graceful and elegant appearance. Inside the front hall is the main space where village rituals are conducted, where residents gather during festivals, sacrificial ceremonies, and important community events.
Behind the front hall is the rear sanctuary, which houses the principal altar of the village tutelary deities. The rear sanctuary of Dinh Ngo has two compartments, measuring approximately 4.46 meters in length and about 7.45 meters in width. Notably, the floor of the rear sanctuary is built about 80 centimeters higher than the floor of the front hall, creating a clear hierarchical arrangement within the worship space. This difference in elevation not only has architectural significance but also expresses reverence for the main sacred area, where statues or tablets of the revered deities are placed.
Between the front hall and the rear sanctuary is a corridor space about 2.55 meters wide. This area functions as a transitional space that harmoniously connects the two main architectural sections of the communal house. The roof in this area is designed with ventilation openings that allow natural light and airflow, helping keep the interior cool and reducing stuffiness during hot and humid weather. This feature reflects the refined characteristics of traditional architecture and demonstrates the long-standing experience of past generations in adapting to the tropical monsoon climate.
In addition to its scale and structural value, Dinh Ngo is also notable for its decorative system and artistic carvings. Many details on the beams, brackets, eave supports, and other wooden components are elaborately carved with familiar themes in folk art such as dragons, phoenixes, floral motifs, sacred animals, and scenes of daily life. These carvings not only serve decorative purposes but also reflect the aesthetic thinking, beliefs, and spiritual life of past residents.
Moreover, the communal house still preserves many worship objects of high historical and artistic value. Artifacts such as horizontal lacquered boards, parallel sentences, thrones, spirit tablets, incense tables, and various ritual objects are all finely crafted in traditional artistic styles. These items not only serve religious ceremonies but also enhance the historical and cultural significance of the communal house through different periods. Thanks to its rich system of relics and distinctive traditional architecture, Dinh Ngo today is not only a spiritual center for local residents but also a structure of great value for research on the architecture and art of Vietnamese communal houses.
Festival
At the beginning of the third lunar month each year, Ngo Village organizes a festival to commemorate and recall the fine traditions of earlier generations. The event also serves as an occasion to educate people about the revolutionary tradition and the cultural history of the village, holding great significance in the spiritual life of local residents.
Classification
Since 2001, Dinh Ngo has been classified by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a National Historical and Cultural Relic.
