Background
Nguyễn Văn Trương (1740-1810) was a famous general and representative meritorious official of Lord Nguyễn Phúc Ánh, who later became Emperor Gia Long. He made many important contributions in the war against the Tây Sơn movement and in the restoration of the Nguyễn family’s cause in the late eighteenth century. Thanks to his many brilliant military achievements, he was ranked among the Five Tiger Generals of Gia Định, the five outstanding military commanders who rendered great service in the restoration and construction of the Nguyễn dynasty.
He was from Lễ Dương district, Thăng Hoa prefecture, Quảng Nam province, now part of Thăng Bình district, Quảng Nam province. Nguyễn Văn Trương grew up during a period of great upheaval in the country, when the government of the Nguyễn lords in Đàng Trong was becoming increasingly weakened and the Tây Sơn movement arose, changing the political situation of the country. It was this historical context that brought him to the military path and made him one of the loyal generals who remained closely attached to Nguyễn Phúc Ánh for a long time in the cause of restoring the Nguyễn family’s enterprise.
Because the surviving historical sources are limited, information about Nguyễn Văn Trương’s family and youth is rather scarce. However, through the records of Nguyễn-dynasty histories, it can be seen that he was a military general of strategic talent, entrusted with many important responsibilities in major campaigns, and became one of the meritorious officials who held an important position in the early Nguyễn dynasty.
Career
Nguyễn Văn Trương was one of the veteran military generals who took part in most of the major campaigns against the Tây Sơn, especially standing out for his talent in commanding naval forces. Thanks to his many brilliant military achievements, Nguyễn Văn Trương was regarded as one of the military pillars of Nguyễn Phúc Ánh and was honored by his contemporaries as one of the Five Tiger Generals of Gia Định.
Historical records do not clearly state when Nguyễn Văn Trương came to live in the Gia Định region, but it can be affirmed that he was involved early in the military upheavals of Southern Vietnam. Around 1776, when Nguyễn Lữ led Tây Sơn troops southward, captured Sài Gòn Citadel, and forced Nguyễn Phúc Ánh to withdraw to Trấn Biên, or Biên Hòa, Nguyễn Văn Trương came under Nguyễn Lữ’s command. With his military talent, he was quickly assigned the post of Chưởng cơ, in charge of commanding troops and warships. However, as the political situation constantly changed, he gradually recognized the prospect of Nguyễn Phúc Ánh restoring his power and decided to switch allegiance to support the Nguyễn lord.
In 1787, when Nguyễn Phúc Ánh secretly left Siam to return to the country in order to rebuild his forces, Nguyễn Văn Trương brought about 300 soldiers and 15 warships to Long Xuyên to join him. This was an extremely difficult time for Nguyễn Phúc Ánh, when his forces were still very thin and he faced great pressure from the Tây Sơn army. Nguyễn Văn Trương’s submission not only significantly strengthened the Nguyễn lord’s military power but also affirmed the loyalty of a general willing to stake his fate on the restoration cause of the Nguyễn family. After achieving many military merits in the first battles, he was appointed Chưởng cơ, and was then promoted to Imperial Commissioner and Commander of the Vanguard Division, concurrently commanding the Central Naval Camp, becoming one of the high-ranking commanders of the Nguyễn army.
In 1788, after Nguyễn Phúc Ánh recaptured Sài Gòn, Nguyễn Văn Trương continued to participate in campaigns to sweep away the remaining Tây Sơn forces in Southern Vietnam. Together with the generals Lê Văn Quân, Tôn Thất Hội, and Võ Tánh, he commanded troops to besiege the Tây Sơn forces at Hổ Châu, preventing General Phạm Văn Tham from breaking the siege and forcing him to retreat to Ba Thắc and then surrender. This victory marked the official return of the entire Gia Định region to Nguyễn Phúc Ánh’s control, creating a solid rear base for later campaigns advancing into Central Vietnam.
Entering the 1790s, Nguyễn Văn Trương became one of the main generals in naval campaigns against the Tây Sơn. In March 1792, taking advantage of the favorable southern monsoon, Nguyễn Phúc Ánh ordered him, together with Nguyễn Văn Thành and two French naval officers, Jean-Baptiste Dayot and Jean-Baptiste Chaigneau, also known as Nguyễn Văn Chấn, to command a fleet in a surprise attack on the Tây Sơn naval base at the Thị Nại estuary in Quy Nhơn. The raid inflicted heavy damage on the Tây Sơn navy before the Nguyễn forces withdrew safely. This was one of the campaigns that clearly demonstrated Nguyễn Văn Trương’s naval command ability and his experience in maritime warfare.
In 1793, Nguyễn Phúc Ánh launched a large-scale offensive into Central Vietnam. While land forces commanded by Tôn Thất Hội, Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức, and Nguyễn Văn Thành advanced to attack Phan Rí, Nguyễn Văn Trương and Võ Tánh followed Nguyễn Phúc Ánh in commanding the navy along the coast. The fleet successively captured Nha Trang, Diên Khánh, Bình Khang prefecture, and then advanced to Phú Yên. After joining with the infantry forces, the Nguyễn army continued to attack Quy Nhơn, the most important defensive center of the Tây Sơn in Central Vietnam. Although the siege did not succeed because the Tây Sơn promptly dispatched a large army to rescue the city, this campaign significantly weakened the enemy’s military strength and laid the groundwork for decisive campaigns in the following years.
In 1801-1802, the war between Nguyễn Phúc Ánh and the Tây Sơn entered its final stage. In early 1801, Nguyễn Văn Trương and Tống Phước Lương commanded the vanguard force to attack the Tây Sơn naval defense system at Thị Nại, coordinating with the forces of Lê Văn Duyệt and Võ Di Nguy. This was the largest naval battle in the history of the Nguyễn-Tây Sơn conflict. Although Võ Di Nguy was killed in battle, the Nguyễn army destroyed almost the entire Tây Sơn fleet and took control of Thị Nại port. This victory was praised by Nguyễn-dynasty historians as the “foremost military achievement” in the restoration cause of the Nguyễn dynasty, opening the way for Nguyễn forces to capture Central Vietnam.
Immediately afterward, Nguyễn Văn Trương continued to command the navy northward to Quảng Ngãi, defeating a Tây Sơn grain-transport convoy at Trà Khúc, then took advantage of the victory to advance into Quảng Nam, seizing key positions such as Đại Ấp, Bến Ván, Đại Chiêm, Hội An, and Phú Triêm. In this series of campaigns, his troops captured dozens of war elephants, cannons, and many warships, while also defeating Tây Sơn generals such as Nguyễn Văn Xuân and Văn Tiến Thể. These successive victories shattered the Tây Sơn defensive system in Central Vietnam.
In June 1801, Nguyễn Văn Trương joined forces with Nguyễn Phúc Ánh at the Hàn estuary, Đà Nẵng, and then commanded the navy straight into Phú Xuân. The fleet under his command was the first force to enter the Hương River, launching an attack on the western side of the imperial citadel. After many days of fierce fighting, the Nguyễn army captured Phú Xuân, forcing Emperor Cảnh Thịnh to flee northward. Nguyễn Văn Trương was then assigned to continue pursuing the Tây Sơn army and blocking the enemy’s retreat at Linh Giang, that is, the Gianh River, thereby helping prevent the Tây Sơn from reorganizing their forces.
In early 1802, when the Tây Sơn launched their final counteroffensive in the Trấn Ninh region, Nguyễn Văn Trương continued to command the navy and defeated the Tây Sơn fleet at the Nhật Lệ estuary in Quảng Bình. This victory caused the Tây Sơn position to collapse completely. After Nguyễn Phúc Ánh ascended the throne as emperor, taking the reign title Gia Long, Nguyễn Văn Trương continued to command the navy together with Lê Văn Duyệt and Lê Chất in advancing to Bắc Hà, completing the unification of the country and ending more than twenty years of civil war.
After the war ended, Nguyễn Văn Trương was entrusted with important administrative responsibilities. In 1805, he was appointed Lưu trấn of Gia Định, replacing Nguyễn Văn Nhơn in administering the whole of Southern Vietnam. In this position, he focused on stabilizing the political situation, consolidating the governing apparatus, and restoring the lives of the people after many years of war. Three years later, he was summoned back to the capital to continue participating in court affairs.
Death and Worship
In 1810, Nguyễn Văn Trương passed away while still in office, at the age of seventy. To recognize his contributions to the restoration cause of the Nguyễn dynasty, Emperor Gia Long posthumously granted him the office of Grand Guardian and allowed him to be worshiped together with other meritorious officials at the Trung Hưng Công Thần Temple. Under the reign of Minh Mạng, he was further posthumously granted the title Duke of Đoan Hùng, affirming his position among the meritorious officials who made many contributions to the unification and construction of the Nguyễn dynasty.
Nguyễn Văn Trương’s name has also been preserved in modern life. Before 1975, in the former Gia Định province, now part of Ho Chi Minh City, a street in Bình Hòa commune, now in Bình Thạnh District, was named after him to commemorate the merits of this famous general. After 1975, the street was renamed Nguyễn Huy Lượng Street, a name that has remained in use to the present day.
Assessment and Evaluation
The life and career of Nguyễn Văn Trương were closely associated with a turbulent period in Vietnamese history from the late eighteenth to the early nineteenth century. As one of the meritorious officials who followed Nguyễn Phúc Ánh from the most difficult years, he made many important contributions in the war against the Tây Sơn, playing a decisive role in the unification of the country and the establishment of the Nguyễn dynasty. Not only was he outstanding on the battlefield for his talent in naval command, but he also demonstrated administrative ability when he was entrusted with guarding and governing the Gia Định region after the country was unified.
Throughout his service to the Nguyễn dynasty, Nguyễn Văn Trương was consistently regarded as a loyal, courageous, and strategically gifted general. He was repeatedly assigned to command important military campaigns and to hold positions of strategic significance, showing Emperor Gia Long’s special trust in his talent and character. After his death, the posthumous granting of the office of Grand Guardian, the title Duke of Đoan Hùng, and his worship at the Trung Hưng Công Thần Temple all testify to the court’s recognition of his great contributions.
Overall, Nguyễn Văn Trương was one of the representative famous generals of the early Nguyễn dynasty and a prominent figure among the Five Tiger Generals of Gia Định. His contributions were not only significant to the restoration cause of the Nguyễn dynasty but also left an important mark on military history and the process of national unification in the early nineteenth century.

Origines
