Nguyen Trung Truc (1838–1868)

Background
Nguyen Trung Truc’s birth name was Nguyen Van Lich; in childhood he was also called Nguyen Van Chon. He was born in 1838 in Binh Nhut hamlet, Tan An prefecture, Gia Dinh province (now Binh Duc commune, Tay Ninh province). Because of his upright and straightforward nature, his teacher gave him the literary name Trung Truc (meaning “upright and straightforward”). After his feat of sinking the French warship L’Espérance in 1861, he became officially known as Nguyen Trung Truc.

His family originally came from Vinh Hoi hamlet, Phu Cat district (now in Gia Lai province, formerly part of Binh Dinh). After the Nguyen dynasty was established, his grandfather Nguyen Van Dao moved with his family to Gia Dinh to avoid persecution of those connected to the Tay Son dynasty, and settled in the Binh Nhut area. His father was Nguyen Van Phung (also called Thang or Truong), and his mother was Le Kim Hong. The family made a living by fishing in the lower reaches of the Vam Co Dong River, giving Nguyen Trung Truc a childhood closely tied to the waterways of the South.

Participation in the Resistance Against the French

Growing up in Binh Nhut hamlet, Nguyen Trung Truc studied both literature and martial arts in the Bao Dinh–Dinh Tuong region. In 1858–1859, he won first place in the martial arts competition at Cai Tai arena (Tan An prefecture), and was acclaimed by many martial arts students as their leader, together organizing local militia forces to resist the French.

In February 1859, when the French attacked Gia Dinh citadel, Nguyen Trung Truc joined the defensive forces under Nguyen Tri Phuong at the Dai don Chi Hoa (Chi Hoa Grand Fortress). With his reputation, he also recruited many more peasants to join the insurgent forces. However, not being fully utilized, he returned to his hometown in Tan An. On March 10, 1860, he swore an oath to take up arms, joined Truong Dinh’s forces at Ky Hoa citadel, and was appointed Quyen sung Quan binh dao (Acting Commander of Military Forces). After Ky Hoa citadel fell in early 1861, he continued to lead his forces back to Tan An to continue the resistance.

After the Chi Hoa Grand Fortress and Dinh Tuong citadel successively fell to the French, the French used the warship L’Espérance (Hope) to patrol and control the Nhut Tao river mouth area. Recognizing this as an important target, on the morning of December 10, 1861, Nguyen Trung Truc together with generals Huynh Khac Nhuong, Vo Van Quang, Nguyen Hoc, and Ho Quang Chieu organized a fake wedding to mislead the enemy, then launched a surprise attack, setting the ship on fire.

The battle destroyed most of the crew, with only eight survivors; the insurgent side lost four men. After the defeat, the French retaliated by burning down Nhut Tao village. This feat made Nguyen Trung Truc’s name famous throughout Nam Ky, and from then on he was commonly called Quan Chon or Quan Lich.

After the Nham Tuat Treaty (1862), despite the three eastern provinces being ceded to France, Nguyen Trung Truc continued to fight alongside Truong Dinh. After Truong Dinh fell in battle, he moved his forces to the western region to establish a new base.

In early 1867, the court appointed him as Ha Tien citadel’s Thu uy (Garrison Commander), but before he could assume the post, Ha Tien had already fallen to the French. Refusing to obey the order to withdraw, he continued to gather insurgent forces in the San Chim and Hon Chong areas, then changed his name to Nguyen Trung Truc, officially operating independently from the court.

At dawn on June 19, 1868, after preparing a force comprising Vietnamese, Chinese, and Khmer fighters, he unexpectedly led his insurgents to attack the Kien Giang outpost at Rach Gia. The insurgents eliminated 5 French officers and 67 soldiers, captured over 100 guns and much ammunition, and held the outpost for five days. This was one of the greatest victories of the anti-French resistance movement in Nam Ky, shocking the colonial authorities.

Immediately afterward, the French mobilized forces from My Tho and Vinh Long to counterattack. Unable to hold the outpost for long, Nguyen Trung Truc proactively withdrew his forces to Hon Chong, then to Phu Quoc Island, establishing a base at Cua Can to continue the long-term resistance against the French colonialists.

Capture and Execution

After the victory at Kien Giang outpost, the French launched numerous large-scale sweeps to eliminate Nguyen Trung Truc’s forces. They offered a reward of 500 silver coins and titles to anyone who captured or killed him, while also using Vietnamese collaborators such as Huynh Cong Tan, Tran Ba Loc, and Governor-General Phuong to hunt down the insurgents. At Rach Gia, the French also carried out bloody reprisals, killing hundreds of civilians to pressure him into surrendering.

During this time, Nguyen Trung Truc’s circumstances were extremely tragic. His wife died after giving birth, and the infant also died from lack of milk while the insurgents were constantly on the run. His mother was captured by the French to coerce him, while his forces were surrounded on Phu Quoc, running out of food and ammunition. Facing the threat of further massacres of his insurgents and the local population, in September 1868, Nguyen Trung Truc decided to surrender himself to the French to save those who remained.

According to Nguyen Trung Truc’s own testimony while imprisoned at the Khai Lon (Grand Prison) in Saigon, he had local people tie him up and hand him over to Huynh Cong Tan, because continuing to fight while surrounded would leave little chance of survival for his forces. Some French documents also record that he surrendered because his forces had run out of food and could no longer hold out.

After being captured, Nguyen Trung Truc was transferred from Rach Gia to Saigon for interrogation. On the way, Huynh Cong Tan repeatedly urged him to submit to French rule to enjoy wealth and honors, but he steadfastly refused.

The French colonialists then decided to execute him to deter the resistance movement. On October 27, 1868, Nguyen Trung Truc was brought to execution at Rach Gia, at only about 30 years of age. Even facing death, he maintained an unyielding spirit, becoming one of the quintessential symbols of the anti-French movement in the South. Many legends tell that before facing the execution ground, he remained composed and displayed indomitable will, earning the admiration of both the French and the local people.

Famous Sayings

When he was being transferred to Saigon by the French, the French commander of Nam Ky at the time alternately tried to persuade him to surrender and threatened him. Nguyen Trung Truc replied:

Mr. French Commander, we are certain that only when you have eradicated all the grass on the face of the earth might you possibly eliminate the patriots of this land”.

If the French give me any rank that gives me the authority to cut off the heads of the Western invaders of this land, then I will accept it. But I have no interest in the rank of Vice Commander.”

And before his death, he resolutely reiterated:

Only when the Westerners have pulled out all the grass of the South will there be no more Southerners to fight the Westerners”.

Veneration

Today, throughout the Southern region, there are many places that worship Nguyen Trung Truc as a Phuc than (Protective Deity). Some famous sites include:

Rach Gia Temple

After his execution, the local people, deeply moved with compassion, secretly worshipped him as a hero at the temple of Nam Hai dai vuong (the Whale God/Great King of the Southern Sea), which is the current Nguyen Trung Truc temple in Rach Gia city.

The Nguyen Trung Truc temple is designed in the shape of the Chinese character “Tam” (三 – three), with the main hall in the center and the eastern and western side pavilions on either side, forming three separate but interconnected buildings. This layout embodies the philosophy of Tam Tai – the harmony between Heaven, Earth, and Humanity in Eastern thought. Southern-style communal temples (dinh) feature open, airy spaces that connect with the surrounding nature. Unlike the more enclosed and formal temples of the North, this temple breathes the spirit of the Mekong Delta, with natural light pouring in from many directions. This openness not only suits the tropical climate but also creates a feeling of closeness and accessibility for visitors.

Passing through the three-entrance gate (tam quan), visitors immediately sense the solemn and sacred atmosphere. The gate features three entrances – the main central entrance reserved for deities, and two side entrances for worshippers – with curved two-tier tiled roofs following traditional architecture. Atop the gate, the intricate “Luong long tranh chau” (Two dragons contesting a pearl) motif is meticulously carved, symbolizing power and sanctity. Couplets and horizontal lacquered boards in Chinese characters flank the gate, praising the merits of the national hero. The dominant red-gold color scheme creates a dignified space, expressing authority and reverence. The artistic details are finely handcrafted, bearing the distinctive mark of Southern culture.

The annual Nguyen Trung Truc festival at Rach Gia takes place from the 26th to the 28th of the 8th lunar month, culminating on the 27th – the anniversary of his death. The event attracts tens of thousands of attendees, including locals, tourists, and overseas Vietnamese. In 2013, the festival was recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a national intangible cultural heritage. This is the largest festival within the Nguyen Trung Truc temple system, reflecting the State’s recognition of traditional cultural values.

Nguyen Trung Truc Temple on Phu Quoc Island

The Nguyen Trung Truc temple on Phu Quoc Island was built in 1993 in the northern part of Phu Quoc, within the Phu Quoc special administrative zone. The Phu Quoc temple possesses many unique architectural features of ancestral construction. In 2011, it was recognized as an important cultural site. Visitors can admire firsthand the intricate patterns, architectural characteristics, building materials, and colors imbued with the culture of the old South.

Specifically, the temple is built in the Tam-shaped layout, consisting of three main sections: the Main Hall (Chinh dien), the Eastern Pavilion (Dong lang), and the Western Pavilion (Tay lang). The Main Hall is the central place of worship for his spirit tablet, as well as for deities and other heroes such as Chanh soai dai can, Pho co Nguyen Hien Dieu, and Pho linh binh Lam Quang Ky.

Upon passing through the temple gate, visitors are greeted by a bronze statue of the indomitable hero, solemn and majestic. Within the temple grounds there is also a tomb, built by local residents in 1986.

After renovation, the temple reopened to visitors in October 2016. Not merely a sightseeing spot on Phu Quoc for those interested in spiritual tourism, this temple also serves as a comprehensive medical center, possessing many medicinal herbs for treating illnesses.

Nguyen Trung Truc (1838-1868)

Biographie
