Name and Geographical Location

Phuoc Hoa Pagoda is located on Nguyen Cong Hoan Street, Quang Tin, Dak R’Lap, Dak Nong. The pagoda lies within a spacious compound, surrounded by vast green pine forests. Although it is still undergoing restoration, the pagoda has made significant contributions to charitable activities and is known as the temple that organizes the largest Ullambana (Vu Lan) ceremony in Dak Nong Province.

History and Figures

Phuoc Hoa Pagoda is a renowned spiritual site built in the 18th century, with a history of over 200 years. It is considered a sacred place that attracts numerous Buddhists and pilgrims from near and far.

In March 2022, the pagoda held the “Consecration and Casting Ceremony” for the Great Bell (Dai Hong Chung), which is regarded as an important Buddhist symbol, bringing serenity and spiritual awakening.

Currently, Venerable Thich Quang Trang serves as the abbot of the pagoda. He originated from Phuoc Vien Pagoda and was appointed in 2016.

Architectural Landscape

The pagoda features a Tam Quan gate in the “four-pillar” architectural style: unlike the gabled type, the four-pillar gate consists of four columns, with the two central ones taller than the two side ones. These pillars divide the space into three entrances, connected above by finely carved beams that bear the embossed name of the pagoda: “Chua Phuoc Hoa.”

From the Tam Quan gate, visitors enter a serene and tranquil space filled with sacred atmosphere and the fragrance of nature. On the right side lies a large pond, surrounded by forest trees covering the hills, creating a majestic natural mountain landscape.

After several restorations, the pagoda now bears the hallmarks of traditional East Asian architecture, with curved tiled roofs and exquisitely carved Buddha statues in every detail.

The main hall’s roof system consists of several parts: the main roof, eaves, roof corners, roof ridges, and supporting structures. The main roof usually occupies two-thirds of the building’s height. The expansive roof extends widely on all sides, creating a large veranda. The eaves are straight, slightly tilted upwards at the corners, adding elegance when viewed from outside. The roof corners curve upwards and are decorated with sophisticated motifs, such as fish transforming into dragons. The roof ridges are distinctively constructed with overlapping yin tiles, ensuring excellent drainage. The roof structure is supported by wooden beams, struts, and steel pipes. On the left side above is the Dharma Wheel, a fundamental Buddhist symbol representing the cycle of samsara, the perfection within, and the path to enlightenment.

Phuoc Hoa Pagoda has a rectangular structure. From outside, it features the “tiered-roof” design with three interconnected sections: the Front Hall leading to the Main Sanctuary. The pagoda has a single chamber, flanked by open corridors. At the front, embossed statues of the two Dharma Protectors—Khuyen Thien (Encourager of Good) and Trung Ac (Suppressor of Evil)—stand symmetrically.

Inside lies a spacious interior, with scripture cabinets on both sides. The Main Sanctuary (Hau Cung) is arranged into three layers:

  • The first layer enshrines the seated statue of Shakyamuni Buddha.

  • The second layer houses the statues of the Western Trinity: Amitabha Buddha standing in the center; Bodhisattva Mahasthamaprapta holding a blue lotus (symbolizing wisdom) on Amitabha’s right; and Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara holding a willow branch and a vase of pure water (symbolizing compassion) on his left.

  • The third layer enshrines the Medicine Buddha (Bhaisajyaguru) and the Seven Healing Buddhas.

On either side of the Main Sanctuary are two altars: the left altar venerates the founding master of the pagoda, while the right altar is dedicated to Bodhidharma.

In addition, the pagoda complex includes auxiliary structures such as guest houses, monks’ quarters, and a kitchen, providing a harmonious and functional living space.

Events and Festivals

Every year, Phuoc Hoa Pagoda welcomes thousands of Buddhists and pilgrims who come to pay homage to the Buddhas and patriarchs. The pagoda regularly organizes festivals, ceremonies, and other spiritual activities, drawing active participation from both the local Buddhist community and visitors from afar.

Besides being an important center for propagating the Dharma, Phuoc Hoa Pagoda is also an ideal destination for those seeking peace and tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle of urban life. Visitors may join meditation retreats, attend Dharma talks, study Buddhist teachings, and explore Buddhist philosophy.

With its majestic natural beauty, fresh air, and serene spiritual environment, Phuoc Hoa Pagoda leaves a lasting impression on all who visit. It offers a rare opportunity to rediscover inner peace and experience the sacred atmosphere of a spiritual sanctuary.

Charitable and Social Activities

Phuoc Hoa Pagoda actively engages in charitable and social initiatives. For instance, it transported 10 tons of agricultural produce to Dong Nai Province to assist disadvantaged people during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the pagoda’s charity club supported a “Zero-Cost Market” to aid residents of Gia Nghia.
