Explanation: The incense burner is one of the important ritual instruments in Buddhist worship ceremonies, used for placing incense sticks to express reverence towards the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. This ceramic incense burner, covered with a greyish-blue glaze, dates to around the 16th century. The artifact was discovered and collected from Hoi Pagoda, Cao Duong Village, Gia Loc Commune, Gia Loc District, Hai Duong Province.
The incense burner measures 16.5 cm in height, with a mouth diameter of 18 cm and a base diameter of 13.5 cm. It has a cylindrical shape, with a body that widens in the middle and gradually narrows toward the mouth and base. The mouth flares outward and is decorated with evenly spaced circular floral patterns. The bulging midsection of the body is also adorned with circular dots suggesting flower motifs, demonstrating harmonious composition and skillful shaping techniques.
At the junction between the body and the mouth, four strap-shaped handles were symmetrically arranged in pairs, creating balance in the overall form. However, as of now, three of the four handles have broken, leaving only one intact. The base is round, tall, and thick, left unglazed, contributing to the sturdiness of the piece.
This greyish-blue glazed ceramic incense burner serves as a vivid testament to the religious life and ceramic artistry of 16th-century Vietnam.
