Origin: Bac Giang, Vietnam
Explanation: Imperial edicts (Sac phong) are a special category of administrative documents that played an important role in the history and culture of Vietnam under the monarchical dynasties. These were highly authoritative legal documents issued by the emperor to recognize and honor individuals, collectives, or deities for their merits, while also manifesting the supreme authority of the central court.
The surviving sac phong today are mainly edicts conferring titles on deities and officials.
Edicts conferring titles on deities (sac phong thần) were issued to honor deities worshiped at local temples, usually historical figures or individuals who had contributed to the protection of the nation and the welfare of the people, and who were later deified in folk beliefs.
Meanwhile, edicts conferring ranks and titles (sac phong quan tước) were documents appointing officials, granting ranks, or rewarding individuals who had rendered great service to the court.
