Name and geographical location
Hoa Binh Province is not only famous for its majestic natural landscape and rich Muong ethnic culture, but also as a spiritual land gathering many sacred temples and shrines associated with the Mother Goddess belief of the Tam Phu – Tu Phu, a distinctive intangible cultural heritage of the Vietnamese people. Among these, notable sites include Thac Bo Goddess Temple (Vai Nua Commune, Da Bac District), Bo Temple (Hao Trang Commune), Muong Dong Palace, and especially Thuong Bong Lai Temple, located within the sacred complex of Dragon Head Mountain (Nui Dau Rong), dedicated to the Second Princess of the Forest Realm (De Nhi Thuong Ngan Tien Nu or Co Doi Thuong Ngan) and the deities of the Four Palaces (Tu Phu Cong Dong).
Situated at the foot of Dragon Head Mountain (Area 3, Cao Phong Town, Hoa Binh Province), about 17 km from Hoa Binh City center, Bong Lai Temple—also known as Thuong Bong Lai Temple—is not only a sacred spiritual site but also a cultural and religious convergence point for people across the Northwest region.
History and figures
The temple was first constructed around 1890 and underwent major restoration in 2013. The article Traditional Festival of Thuong Bong Lai Temple notes:
“The temple was built in the 2nd prosperous year of King Thanh Thai (Canh Dan, 1890). After enduring wars and the vicissitudes of history, the temple deteriorated and faded. In 2013, it was rebuilt beautifully and completely restored in architectural form.” (1)
According to folklore passed down in the two regions of Nho Quan (Ninh Binh) and Cao Phong (Hoa Binh), both Bong Lai Temples are dedicated to Co Doi Thuong Ngan, also known as Princess Son Tinh, daughter of Emperor De Thich. Legend has it that in ancient Nho Quan, there lived a virtuous Muong chieftain who had no children. The Jade Emperor sent Princess Son Tinh to incarnate as his daughter.
At the age of four, her family moved to Cao Phong. One day, while fetching water at the foot of Dragon Head Mountain, she met an old sick woman and selflessly helped her—unaware that this was Mother Goddess Thuong Ngan in human form. Later, the girl ascended with the Mother to learn the Way, mastering divine arts to aid the people, teaching them cultivation, weaving, and crafts.
In gratitude, the people of both regions built temples to honor her, naming them Bong Lai. The temple in Nho Quan marks her divine birth, while the temple in Cao Phong marks her transformation and ascension with the Mother Goddess, becoming the revered Saint Maiden of the Four Palaces.
The two temples—Bong Lai Ha in Nho Quan (Ninh Binh) and Bong Lai Thuong in Cao Phong (Hoa Binh)—thus commemorate her birth and transformation, respectively. (2)
Architecture and landscape
Thuong Bong Lai Temple enjoys a magnificent landscape along the Northwest route. Covering an area of 5,000 m² amid the green serenity of forests, it rests against Dragon Head Mountain and faces Cao Phong Town.
Visitors agree it truly embodies the phrase “Bong Lai fairyland”. The temple stands as one of Vietnam’s most splendid and elegant spiritual sites. (3)
In front of the grand three-entrance gate (Tam Quan) lies a semicircular pond that enhances the tranquil atmosphere. Beyond the gate is a spacious courtyard leading to the Dai Bai Hall of three compartments, lavishly decorated with reliefs, gilded panels, and carved doors. The main sanctuary (Cung Cam) follows the traditional three-compartment design, enshrining the Tam Toa Thanh Mau (Three Holy Mothers) and Co Doi Thuong Ngan. The Second Palace (Cung De Nhi) features a five-compartment, eight-roof structure dedicated to three noble goddesses granted royal titles. The Third Palace (Cung De Tam) has a seven-compartment, two-roof layout honoring the Tam Phu Cong Dong (Assembly of the Three Palaces).
Beyond its architectural beauty, Bong Lai Temple is also linked to nearby natural grottoes such as Hoa Son Thach Cave, Bottomless Cave, Thien Thai Cave, Phong Son Cave, and Nhan Long Son Cave. Behind the temple stands a grand statue of Shakyamuni Buddha several meters high, placed solemnly at the foot of Dragon Head Mountain, contributing to the sacred grandeur of the complex.
Artifacts
Author Moc Lam, in the article Bong Lai Temple, notes:
“The temple still preserves valuable relics such as an ancient bronze bell from the reign of King Thanh Thai (1889–1907) and two royal decrees.” (4)
Events and festivals
The Thuong Bong Lai Temple Festival is solemnly held with two parts: the ritual and the festive. The ritual part follows traditional customs, highlighted by the Water Procession Ceremony, in which participants carry water from Thuong Bong Lai Temple to Dong Son Temple, creating a sacred and dignified atmosphere.
The festival’s festive part is vibrant, featuring cultural performances, sports, and folk games such as sack races, goat-catching, and pot-breaking. It is not only a time for worshippers to offer incense and express reverence but also a moment to pray for national peace and prosperity. The festival embodies the moral principle of “remembering one’s roots” while promoting humanitarian and virtuous values in community life.
Recognition
With its cultural, historical, and scenic significance, Bong Lai Temple and Dragon Head Mountain were officially recognized as National Historical and Scenic Sites in 2012.
