Name and Geographical Location

Bich Cau Dao Quan, or simply Bich Cau Pagoda, is a unique historical and cultural relic closely associated with the traditions of Taoist belief in the ancient Thang Long Imperial Citadel.

Geographically, Bich Cau Dao Quan is currently located at 14 Cat Linh Street, Cat Linh Ward, Dong Da District, Hanoi. It is a sacred site situated quite close to the city center, making it convenient for visitors to explore, worship, and learn about the culture.

From the Temple of Literature – Quoc Tu Giam, one can reach Bich Cau Dao Quan with just a short walk of about 500 meters. The relic is located right on the main street, Cat Linh, and is easily recognizable by its ancient three-arched gate (Tam Quan). Locals and tourists can visit the site using various means of transportation.

In the past, this area belonged to An Trach village and was linked to the romantic legend of Tran Tu Uyen, a young man who built a hut to study beside a stream flowing through Bich Cau quarter. The name “Bich Cau” – meaning “emerald stream” – also originates from this poetic image. The entire area was also known by the folk name of Kim Quy mound, a high, quiet location considered a sacred land where the spiritual essence of heaven and earth converged.

History and People

According to historical records, Bich Cau Dao Quan was built during the reign of King Le Thanh Tong (1442–1497). Initially, it was a place for Taoist priests to practice the art of eternal life, cultivate their way to immortality, and worship the Taoist deities. This area, originally part of An Trach ward and located near the Temple of Literature – Quoc Tu Giam, was a serene and tranquil place suitable for such practices.

By the 17th century, as Taoism declined, many Dao Quan temples were gradually repurposed or merged with folk beliefs. Within the grounds of Bich Cau Dao Quan, new structures such as a Buddhist temple and a temple for the Holy Mother (Thanh Mau) were also built, demonstrating the syncretism of Taoist, Buddhist, and Mother Goddess beliefs.

After many years of war and turmoil, the Dao Quan was severely damaged. In the early 19th century, during the reign of King Gia Long, Le Chat, the Governor-General of Bac Thanh, had the site restored, partially recovering its original scale. During the nationwide resistance war against the French, Bich Cau Dao Quan served as the headquarters for the Hang Bot Resistance Committee. However, in 1947, the temple was destroyed by French forces. In 1953, local residents organized a reconstruction on the old foundation, continuing the legacy of the site.

More recently, in 2011, Bich Cau Dao Quan underwent a large-scale renovation and restoration, with all traditional components such as the Nghi Mon (ceremonial gate), Tien Te (front sanctuary), Hau Cung (main sanctuary), and Nha Mau (Mother Goddess temple) fully restored. The current architectural complex faces south, looking out onto Cat Linh Street, and bears the distinctive features of traditional Northern Vietnamese architecture.

In addition to its architectural and religious value, Bich Cau Dao Quan is also famous for its connection to the legend of “Bich Cau Ky Ngo” (The Strange Meeting at the Emerald Stream), a legendary romance immortalized in medieval literature. According to the story “Bich Cau Ky Ngo Ky,” which is traditionally attributed to Doan Thi Diem, during the reign of King Le Thanh Tong, there was a poor scholar named Tran Tu Uyen who built a hut by a stream in Bich Cau quarter to study day and night.

One day, while attending a festival at Ngoc Ho Pagoda (also known as Ba Ngo Pagoda, now in Quoc Tu Giam ward), he met the fairy Giang Kieu. They met and fell in love, but due to the distance between the human and celestial realms, they could not marry.

Out of love for him, Giang Kieu used her magic to hide herself within a painting, then transformed into a mortal to live with Tu Uyen. They had a son named Chau Nhi. However, Tu Uyen later became bored with his studies and took to drinking. When his wife tried to dissuade him without success, she angrily returned to the heavens. Tu Uyen, lonely and heartbroken, even considered suicide. Fortunately, Giang Kieu appeared to him and advised him to learn medicine to help people. From then on, Tu Uyen reformed, became successful, and was a renowned physician. In the end, they both rode a crane to the celestial realm, leaving behind a romantic and sacred legend.

The people of An Trach village respectfully established a temple on the site of Tu Uyen’s old study hut, naming it Bich Cau Dao Quan, and venerated him as the village’s tutelary god (Thanh hoang lang). King Le later conferred the title “An Quoc Chan Nhan,” or “the Protector of the Nation,” upon Tran Tu Uyen, and named the entire complex An Quoc Tu, which is used interchangeably with the name Bich Cau Dao Quan.

Here, in addition to worshipping Thai Thuong Lao Quan – the supreme deity of Taoism – other celestial beings and saints are also revered, especially the immortal “Tien ong” Tran Tu Uyen. For a long time, Bich Cau Dao Quan has been a gathering place for poets and scholars from the Temple of Literature – Quoc Tu Giam, who would come here to seek poetry, prescriptions, or to compose their own verses. Many legends recount that wishes made here are granted, making the temple even more sacred and renowned.

Today, Bich Cau Dao Quan remains a distinctive cultural destination. Annually, on the 4th day of the second lunar month, a traditional festival takes place, featuring an incense offering ceremony, traditional rituals, calligraphy performances, and folk art exchanges. The festival attracts a large number of locals and tourists, contributing to the preservation and promotion of national cultural identity in the heart of Hanoi.

Architecture and Landscape

Bich Cau Dao Quan is not only a historical relic associated with the legend of “Bich Cau Ky Ngo” but also a unique architectural work that bears the distinct cultural imprint of ancient Thang Long. Located on the facade of Cat Linh Street (Dong Da District, Hanoi), the temple faces south – a favorable direction in Eastern geomancy (feng shui). The entire complex is built in the “Nội Công Ngoại Quốc” style and arranged in a “Đinh” (丁) shape, reflecting a hierarchical structure from the profane to the sacred, which aligns with the Taoist ideology of spiritual purification.

The architecture of Bich Cau Dao Quan consists of multiple harmonious components in a traditional style. The first is the Nghi Mon – the three-arched gate – with two tall pillars carved with dragons and phoenixes, and Chinese-character couplets, marking the boundary between the secular world and the sacred space within. Beyond the gate is the Tien Te, a three-compartment building with traditional “muit hai” tiles and a timber structure, where horizontal lacquered boards and subsidiary altars are placed, and pilgrims are received. The Hau Cung (main sanctuary) is located at the center and is the principal place of worship, housing statues of Thai Thuong Lao Quan, the Three Pure Ones (Tam Thanh), and a statue set of Tien Ong (Immortal Ông), Tien Ba (Immortal Bà), and Tien Con (Immortal Son). This space is designed to be secluded, with a curved vaulted roof, large ironwood columns, and finely carved and solemnly arranged interiors. Additionally, the complex includes the Nha Mau for worshipping the Mother Goddesses of the Four Palaces (Tu Phu), a guesthouse for visitors from afar, and other ancillary structures such as the Nha Ni (nuns’ quarters), Nha Hau (rear building), and a stupa garden, forming an enclosed and harmonious spatial complex.

Besides the architecture, the landscape of the Dao Quan also holds symbolic meaning. The relic’s campus spans nearly 3,000 square meters, with a spacious ancient brick-paved courtyard connected to An Quoc Pagoda and other adjacent structures. In the middle of the courtyard is a rock garden (hon non bo) in the Taoist style, which serves both as a feng shui windbreak and a scenic highlight. In front of the courtyard, there are also two stone wells, one circular and one square, symbolizing heaven and earth (thien vien – dia phuong), reflecting the Eastern cosmic worldview.

Notably, throughout its history, as Taoism declined in the 17th century, Bich Cau Dao Quan gradually assimilated elements of Buddhism and the Mother Goddess religion. This harmonious combination of Taoist, Buddhist, and folk beliefs has created a unique characteristic for the relic, representing the diverse spiritual life of the people of Thang Long. The site features a Buddhist temple, a Mother Goddess temple, and a preserved Dao Quan for worshipping the Immortals – forming a syncretic, intimate, and profound religious space.

Regarding its restoration history, the relic was damaged multiple times by war. During the reign of King Gia Long, the Governor-General of Bac Thanh, Le Chat, ordered its restoration. In 1947, the temple was destroyed by the French forces, but in 1953, the people of An Trach village voluntarily contributed to its reconstruction. Most recently, in 2011, Bich Cau Dao Quan was again extensively renovated and restored, preserving its traditional appearance and affirming its position as a distinctive cultural and religious destination in the heart of the capital.

Artifacts

Bich Cau Dao Quan currently preserves and houses a number of valuable artifacts that reflect the beliefs and cultural value of the relic. The main artifacts include:

  • 3 Taoist statues, including Tien Ong, Tien Ba, and Tien Con. Specifically, the most sacred area of the temple, the Hau Cung (main sanctuary), houses a statue of Thai Thuong Lao Quan – the supreme deity of Taoism – along with other immortals.

  • Kham tho (ancestral shrine).

  • Huong an (incense table).

  • Hoanh phi (horizontal lacquered boards), including a large one with Chinese characters.

  • Cua vong (ornate lacquered panels).

  • Cau doi (lacquered couplets).

  • Wooden signboards.

  • Hac tho (worshipping cranes).

  • Chap kich (ritual weapons).

  • Other ancient ceremonial objects, solemnly arranged with lanterns and incense burners.

These artifacts are all beautifully and meticulously carved, contributing to the sacred and mystical atmosphere of the relic.

Events and Festivals

The traditional festival of Bich Cau Dao Quan Relic (Dong Da District, Hanoi) is held annually on the 4th day of the 2nd lunar month to commemorate the day when the Immortal Tien Ong Tran Tu Uyen achieved his path to immortality. This is a prominent event with a strong Taoist character and cultural imprint in the heart of the capital. Besides activities such as incense offerings from various clans, ceremonial rites, calligraphy presentations, and traditional art performances, the highlight of the festival is the grand procession of the Immortal Chan Nhan – a sacred and solemn ritual.

Legend has it that Tran Tu Uyen was a poor, diligent student who came to Kim Quy mound (part of An Trach village, now Cat Linh Ward, Dong Da District) to build a thatched hut to study medicine and help people. He married the fairy Giang Kieu, and after many years of spiritual cultivation, he, his wife, and their son rode a crane back to the heavens. The villagers established a temple, called Bich Cau communal house (dinh), to worship the Immortal Tien Ong.

The 4th day of the 2nd lunar month has become a major festival for the local people and a destination for tourists who want to learn about the origins of national culture. Besides the main day, Bich Cau Dao Quan also holds two other major ceremonies: the 3rd day of the 6th lunar month – commemorating the day the Immortal Chan Nhan ascended to the heavens, and the 12th day of the 8th lunar month – commemorating the birthday of the Immortal Tien Ong.

Activities and Rituals:

  • Main Rituals: On the main festival day, there are programs for chanting sutras to invite Buddha and Saints, ceremonial rites, and incense offerings. The afternoon is for local villagers and visitors to offer incense and perform their own rituals.

  • Grand Procession: A special feature is the grand procession of the Immortal Chan Nhan, involving 102 participants (54 men and 48 women). The ritual is performed with solemnity, accompanied by the vibrant sound of drums and gongs. The elaborate palanquin carries the royal edict (sac phong) of the Immortal, showing deep reverence for the Saintly figure. The procession of people respectfully carries trays of offerings such as ceremonial cakes, fruits, sticky rice, pork, chicken, and wine. This ceremony not only revives ancient customs but also awakens pride in the national cultural heritage and a sense of self-respect for a valiant and powerful Vietnamese nation.

  • Traditional Art Performances: Following the ritual part is a cultural program featuring ca tru singing and a theatrical performance depicting the story of Tien Ong studying, practicing medicine to help people, and meeting the fairy. Bich Cau Dao Quan is a familiar venue for ca tru enthusiasts, as it hosts performances by the Ca Tru Club. The 2024 festival (Year of the Wood Dragon) also included lion dances, palanquin carrying, and dragon dances.

  • Other traditional art activities include performances and exchanges of xam singing and chau van by the UNESCO Hanoi Traditional Music Club.

  • Other activities: Performances and giving away calligraphy, traditional cultural exchanges, studying classical Chinese and Nom scripts, practicing martial arts, and doing qigong (duong sinh).

Classification

Bich Cau Dao Quan was recognized by the state as a National Historical and Cultural Relic in 1990. It is not only a place of worship and religious activity but also a spiritual heritage site deeply connected to the spiritual life of Hanoians, enduring through the thousand-year-old culture of Thang Long.
