General Introduction

Located in Tan An Ward, Hoi An City, Quang Nam Province, Chuc Thanh Pagoda has a history of over 300 years. It is one of the most renowned ancient pagodas in Quang Nam, known as the birthplace of the Chuc Thanh Zen lineage of the Lam Te (Linji) Zen school. The pagoda is famous for its diverse collection of meticulously carved statues and its impressive traditional architecture.

History of Formation

Chuc Thanh Pagoda (also called Khoai Pagoda) was built in 1671, at the end of the 17th century, when Hoi An Ancient Town was still a bustling international trading port.

It is recorded that Zen Master Thich Minh Hai, after arriving in Vietnam to attend a grand ordination ceremony in Hue, decided to choose an elevated and airy area to build a simple hermitage for practice. Later, he accepted disciples and established the Lam Te Chuc Thanh Zen lineage here. For this reason, the pagoda is also regarded as the Patriarchal Monastery (To Dinh) of Chuc Thanh in Quang Nam.

Architecture

The three-entrance gate (Tam Quan) bears strong features of ancient-style architecture. At the top of the gate are three lotus flowers, symbols closely associated with Buddhist culture.

Facing southwest, the pagoda lies quietly under the shade of old trees, exuding both solemnity and antiquity. Built in the “Tam”-shaped layout (三), typical of Vietnamese pagodas, it harmoniously combines Vietnamese and Chinese artistic motifs. The statues inside are finely carved and elaborately detailed, truly remarkable works of art.

From the outside, the pagoda appears tranquil under the lush canopy of old trees. The surrounding gardens are filled with fruit trees and blooming flowers throughout the year, attracting butterflies and birds, creating a serene and harmonious landscape that soothes the hearts of those burdened by worldly struggles. For centuries, this peaceful atmosphere has nurtured generations of virtuous monks and lay disciples who contributed to Buddhism and the nation.

Upon entering, visitors encounter the moss-covered Tam Quan Gate, topped with two lions facing each other and decorated with delicate carvings. Inscribed above are the five characters: “Sac Tu Chuc Thanh Tu Mon” (Bestowed by the Imperial Court: Chuc Thanh Pagoda Gate), along with a pair of couplets on either side. Beyond the gate are flower beds, an ancient stupa garden, a screen wall, and a miniature landscape with a Quan Yin statue. The fusion of traditional and modern, Chinese and Vietnamese architectural elements reflects the flourishing golden era of culture, religion, and commerce in ancient Hoi An.

At the temple’s veranda, two famous couplets are inscribed:

  1. Chuc Nam quoc Chi ton, tu hai nhan dan ham khe thu / Thanh Tay Phuong lien toa, nhat dan Tang chung tong quy y.

  2. Chuc doi Linh son van co, vinh truyen tam dieu ly / Thanh khai Phap thuy thien thu, ke tuc tánh chan nhu.

The most remarkable feature of the temple grounds is the ancient stupa garden, which includes 16 stupas that enshrine the remains of Patriarch Minh Hai and other venerable monks of the lineage.

Next is the Main Hall, standing prominently at the center with strong wooden beams and pillars, offering a spacious atmosphere. The roof is covered with yin-yang tiles, adorned with a pair of dragons and phoenixes, carved with great precision. The eaves feature reliefs depicting the life of Shakyamuni Buddha, from birth to parinirvana.

Inside, the central altar enshrines the Three Buddhas (Tam The) at the top, followed by Maitreya Buddha (Di Lac), flanked by Ananda and Kasyapa, as well as Manjushri and Samantabhadra Bodhisattvas, and statues of the 18 Arhats.

On the sides stand statues of Dharmapala guardians and Tieu Dien, each 1.75 meters tall. The hall also houses large and small drums, a great bronze bell, a small bell, along with numerous gilded wooden boards and couplets. The roof ridge is decorated symmetrically with dragon and phoenix motifs, while the eaves depict scenes from Buddha Shakyamuni’s life. Nearby, the Front Hall (Tien Duong) contains four large stone steles recording the temple’s renovations and the contributions of monasteries and devotees.

Events

Every year, on the 7th day of the 11th lunar month, monks from Quang Nam and Da Nang gather at Chuc Thanh Pagoda to commemorate the passing anniversary (vien tich) of the founding Patriarch of the Lam Te lineage. The Húy Kỵ Ceremony is solemnly held with great reverence.

In addition, every three years (Tiger, Snake, Monkey, and Pig years), monks of the Chuc Thanh lineage from across the country return here to attend the Patriarch’s memorial ceremony and to discuss Buddhist affairs of the sect.

  1. Chuc Nam quoc Chi ton, tu hai nhan dan ham khe thu / Thanh Tay Phuong lien toa, nhat dan Tang chung tong quy y.

  2. Chuc doi Linh son van co, vinh truyen tam dieu li / Thanh khai Phap thuy thien thu, ke tuc tánh chan nhu.
