Do thời gian và biến động lịch sử, chùa từng xuống cấp.

Pho Cu Pagoda Festival – Cao Bang

Time

The Pho Cu Pagoda Festival is held annually on the 2nd day of the 2nd lunar month.

Location

Pho Cu Pagoda is currently located in Group 1, Pho Cu Street, Hop Giang Ward, Cao Bang Province.

History and Artifacts

Pho Cu Pagoda originated as a small shrine of the Chinese community, built in 1679 during the reign of King Le Hy Tong (the 3rd year of the Vinh Tri era), on its present site. In the past, Chinese merchant caravans traveling for trade often stopped here and believed that this land was sacred, blessed by Quan Van Truong—a renowned general of the Three Kingdoms period—who manifested his divine protection to help them overcome difficulties and attain good fortune. For this reason, they established a shrine to worship Quan De in gratitude for his merits.

During the Nguyen dynasty, from the reign of Gia Long through subsequent emperors, the shrine was renovated and expanded in a new architectural style and converted into a pagoda, adopting the worship model of “former saints, latter Buddhas.” As a result, Pho Cu Pagoda bears strong architectural characteristics of the Nguyen period. Inscriptions on the horizontal beams still record dates such as the eighth year of Thanh Thai and the first year of Bao Dai (1926). The pagoda currently preserves five stone steles documenting restoration activities during the reigns of Gia Long (1814), Minh Mang (1825), Tu Duc (1858, 1876), and Thanh Thai (1893).

Due to the passage of time and historical upheavals, the pagoda once fell into serious disrepair. In 1945, local residents contributed to its restoration, adding upper structures to the two main sanctuaries and decorating them with floral rosettes and dragons in the Nguyen style. After the temple dedicated to Quoc Cong Tiet Che Hung Dao Dai Vuong Tran Quoc Tuan in Pho Thau ceased to exist, the local community transferred the worship practices to Pho Cu Pagoda.

Following the conflict of 1979, the pagoda suffered damage and many ritual objects were disturbed; some were moved to Ngoc Thanh Temple, while others remained at the pagoda, including lacquered and gilded incense altars carved with tiger faces and spiral cloud motifs, thrones, spirit tablets, offering trays, and ceramic ritual objects. Despite war and the ravages of time, many artifacts have retained their artistic value and antique character.

Today, the pagoda has been comprehensively restored. Statues of Quan Thanh De Quan and Van Xuong De Quan are placed in front of the gate; the main entrance displays the horizontal plaque “Hien Thanh Cung.” The worship spaces are harmoniously arranged: the side hall enshrines the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions, Hieu Khuong Hoang Hau, and Duc Thanh Tran; the main sanctuary worships Ngoc Hoang Thuong De together with various deities; and the rear sanctuary enshrines the Three Buddhas of the Three Times, Amitabha Buddha, and his disciples, featuring an elaborate system of statues and refined carved decorations.

Beyond its cultural and religious value, Pho Cu Pagoda is also closely associated with local revolutionary history. On August 22, 1945, it served as a gathering point for large crowds of the people of Cao Bang town during a major rally announcing the establishment of the Provisional People’s Committee of the province and town, marking the victory of the August General Uprising. This event ushered in the official birth of revolutionary authority in the locality.

The pagoda was ranked as a provincial-level historical–cultural relic on December 31, 2002. With its outstanding historical, cultural, and architectural values, Pho Cu Pagoda is recognized as a representative Nguyen-period architectural work in Cao Bang City.

Through historical changes and the erosion of time, Pho Cu Pagoda deteriorated severely. In early 2011, after being appointed abbot of Pho Cu Pagoda, Venerable Thich Gia Quang—serving both as the abbot and as Head of the Buddhist Executive Board of Cao Bang Province—reported the serious degradation of the pagoda to provincial authorities and requested permission to restore and renovate it in order to promote its heritage value.

On December 4, 2018, Venerable Thich Gia Quang submitted Proposal No. 08/TTR-CCP to the Provincial People’s Committee, requesting approval of the investment policy for the restoration, renovation, and promotion of the heritage value of Pho Cu Pagoda (Cao Bang City), which was approved by the Provincial People’s Committee under Official Letter No. 1030/UBND-XD dated April 19, 2018.

On July 5, 2018, Venerable Thich Gia Quang submitted Proposal No. 09/TTR-CCP to the Provincial People’s Committee, requesting appraisal and approval of the economic–technical report dossier for the restoration, renovation, and enhancement of the heritage value of Pho Cu Pagoda; this was approved by the Provincial People’s Committee under Decision No. 75/QD-UBND dated January 22, 2019.

On April 6, 2019 (the 2nd day of the 3rd lunar month of the Ky Hoi year), the restoration and renovation project was officially commenced. On February 23, 2020 (the 1st day of the 2nd lunar month of the Canh Ty year), the pagoda held the inauguration ceremony, marking the successful completion of the restoration project.

Pho Cu Pagoda Festival – Cao Bang

The ritual segment of the Pho Cu Pagoda Festival is conducted in a solemn and reverent manner, reflecting the traditional religious and spiritual life of the local community. The festival usually begins with the opening ceremony, during which the organizing committee, representatives of local authorities, village elders, local residents, and visitors from afar gather in the pagoda courtyard in a dignified atmosphere.

This is followed by the incense-offering ritual at the main sanctuary. The altar is solemnly arranged with incense, flowers, lamps, tea, fruits, and traditional offerings. The chief officiant and assistants perform the rituals of offering incense, flowers, and sacrificial items according to traditional procedures, respectfully reporting to the Buddhas, saints, and deities worshipped at the pagoda, praying for national peace, favorable weather, abundant harvests, and the safety and prosperity of the people.

After the main ritual, local residents and visitors proceed in turn to the various altars to burn incense and pay homage to the Buddhas and saints, expressing devotion and conveying early-spring wishes such as prayers for wealth, fortune, blessings, and peace for their families and loved ones. The acts of worship take place in an orderly manner, reflecting cultural etiquette in sacred spaces and contributing to the preservation of the pagoda’s sanctity.

The ritual segment not only serves the purpose of praying for peace and blessings but also provides an opportunity to educate the community about the tradition of “remembering the source,” reminding present generations to cherish the cultural and religious values inherited from their ancestors and to contribute to preserving and promoting the historical and cultural value of Pho Cu Pagoda.

The festive segment unfolds in a joyful and lively atmosphere with a wide range of cultural and sporting activities, attracting large numbers of residents and visitors. Highlights include performances celebrating the Party and the spring season, featuring folk songs and dances such as Da hai, quan ho, and chau van, presented by cultural troupes from wards and communes across the area.

In addition, the festival space includes book exhibitions and displays introducing and promoting local specialties of the Cao Bang “Non Nuoc” region through booths organized by the 12 residential groups of Hop Giang Ward. Many traditional folk games—such as Chinese chess, tug-of-war, stick pushing, bamboo dancing, and lay co—are also held, creating a healthy recreational environment, enhancing social interaction and community cohesion, and contributing to the vibrant atmosphere imbued with strong national cultural identity.

La fete de la pagode Pho Cu – Cao Bang

Temps
