Trở về An Dương, Nữ tướng Lê Chân tiếp tục mở mang đồn trại, lập nên trang An Biên.
Đình An Biên toạ lạc trên khuôn viên đất chữ nhật vuông vức, rộng chừng 3060m².

An Bien Communal House (Hai Phong)
Name and Geographic Location
An Bien Communal House is located at No. 50/170 Hai Ba Trung Street, An Bien Ward, Le Chan District, Hai Phong City. It is a representative ancient architectural structure that bears strong historical and cultural imprints of the port city region. The communal house is not only a place of worship but also a cultural symbol reflecting the spirit and identity of the people of Hai Phong.
History and Historical Figures
An Bien Communal House is one of the most representative sites in Hai Phong dedicated to Female General Le Chan—an outstanding heroine of the uprising led by the Trung Sisters against the domination of the Eastern Han dynasty. In the collective memory of the people of An Bien in particular and of Hai Phong in general, she is revered as the pioneer who reclaimed and founded the ancient settlement of An Bien, a “coastal defensive region” that became the precursor of today’s Hai Phong City. For this reason, over many generations, Female General Le Chan has been venerated as the sacred tutelary deity of the port city, symbolizing an indomitable spirit, the will for independence, and the enduring vitality of coastal inhabitants.
According to the hagiographic record Than tich Duong canh thanh hoang Nam Hai uy linh Thanh Chan Cong chua, compiled by Dong cac Dai hoc si and Han lam vien scholar Nguyen Binh in the first year of Hong Phuc (1572), Female General Le Chan was the daughter of Le Dao and Tran Thi Chau. She was born in An Bien village, Dong Trieu district, Kinh Mon prefecture, Hai Duong province in the past (now Thuy An commune, Dong Trieu district, Quang Ninh province). Her father was a learned man who taught and practiced medicine to help people, while her mother was known for her kindness and gentleness.
During her lifetime, Le Chan was renowned for her beauty, intelligence, martial prowess, and exceptional resolve. When To Dinh, the Han-appointed Governor of Giao Chi, heard of her reputation and attempted to force her to become his concubine, she resolutely refused. With the support of her parents, she left her homeland and took refuge in the coastal area of An Duong district. Enraged, To Dinh persecuted her family and killed her father, Le Dao, deepening both her personal and national grievances.
Nurturing a great ambition for revenge, Le Chan led her relatives and villagers to reclaim land and establish a new settlement, naming it An Bien in memory of her former homeland. There, she recruited talented individuals, gathered young men from various places, stockpiled provisions, and secretly prepared forces to resist the northern occupiers.
In the spring of the year 40, when the Trung Sisters raised the banner of uprising in Me Linh, Female General Le Chan promptly responded, leading the An Bien militia into battle and achieving many remarkable victories. Within a short time, the insurgent forces captured 65 fortresses and swept away the rule of the Eastern Han. After the victory, Trung Trac was proclaimed queen (Trung Vuong) and rewarded the meritorious generals. At the age of only 24, Female General Le Chan was conferred the title Thanh Chan Cong chua and appointed as Commander of Internal Military Affairs, concurrently responsible for defending the northeastern coastal region of the country.
Returning to An Duong, Female General Le Chan continued to expand fortifications and formally established the An Bien settlement. She organized the reclamation of wasteland along the Tam Bac River, developed agriculture, cultivated rice and mulberry trees, rapidly transforming the area into a prosperous region with a growing population and stable economy. At the same time, she emphasized military training for both troops and civilians, establishing wrestling grounds and martial arenas to practice military arts, improve physical strength, and enhance combat readiness to defend the coastal frontier.
In the year 42, the Eastern Han court dispatched Ma Vien with a large army to suppress the uprising. Facing overwhelming enemy forces, the movement failed by the year 43. After the Trung Sisters committed suicide in the Hat River, Female General Le Chan withdrew her troops to the mountainous forest area of Lat Son (now Thanh Son commune, Kim Bang district, Ha Nam province) to continue resistance. Due to the vast disparity in strength, she heroically sacrificed herself at the area of Giat Dau Mountain, preserving the integrity and honor of a national heroine.
After her death, people in many places—especially the residents of An Bien—built shrines and communal houses to worship her and commemorate her great contributions. Through successive dynasties, she was granted royal titles and honored as the tutelary deity of An Bien, becoming a sacred symbol closely associated with the formation and development of the Hai Phong region.
Architecture and Landscape
An Bien Communal House is situated on a rectangular plot covering approximately 3,060 square meters. Its architectural layout follows the traditional chu cong (工-shaped) plan, comprising a five-bay main hall (tien duong), a three-bay connecting hall (ong muong), and a three-bay rear sanctuary (hau cung). The spacious courtyard is paved with Bat Trang bricks and serves both as a ceremonial space and a gathering area during festivals.
Today, the communal house preserves intact its original architectural configuration, including the five-bay main hall, three-bay connecting hall, and three-bay rear sanctuary. The structure is elaborately decorated with refined carvings and motifs of the Four Sacred Creatures and the Four Noble Plants, representing the characteristic Nguyen-dynasty architectural and artistic style of the nineteenth century. A distinctive architectural highlight is the tiled roof, which occupies two-thirds of the building’s height, spreading wide and descending low, with both ends soaring outward like two large boats. Along the ridge, a pair of phoenixes is sculpted facing a circular sun disc, creating a solemn and highly artistic appearance.
In addition to the principal structures arranged in the traditional chu cong layout, An Bien Communal House also features unique auxiliary buildings that enhance both the scale and the aesthetic and spiritual qualities of the complex. These include the left and right wings (ta mac and huu mac), each with three bays, flanking the rear of the main hall and facing inward. The gable walls of these wings serve as the rear walls of the side bays of the main hall, with small openings in the center creating spatial continuity between the wings and the expansive main hall. The roofs of the wings are lower than that of the connecting hall, forming decorative lines that accentuate the tiled roof of the main structure.
From the rear walls of the wings, enclosing walls extend to connect with the rear sanctuary, forming a unified and enclosed spatial complex. Along these walls are symmetrical auxiliary gates designed in the form of two-story, four-roof towers, roofed with dragon-scale tiles and curved eaves shaped like softly turned leaves. The central bay of the rear sanctuary rises into a three-tiered square tower with eight roofs in the thuong thu ha thach style. The supporting walls are built of brick and adorned externally with raised reliefs of the Four Sacred Creatures. The eight curved roof corners resemble dragons paying homage to phoenixes, with gracefully turned leaves likened to the flowing arms of young women performing a lantern dance.
The gable of the rear sanctuary curves softly in the shape of a pan handle, identical to the gable of Den Nghe, another site dedicated to Female General Le Chan, the tutelary deity of the ancient An Bien village. On both sides of the gable, square stone pillars are erected, topped with stepped capitals and drum-shaped finials. Standing atop these finials is a pair of powerful kim nghe statues, their bodies covered with ceramic scales. Like dragons, nghe are symbolic mythical creatures of the cosmos, often appearing as a male–female pair known as Ky–Lan.
Festivals
Each year, An Bien Communal House organizes commemorative activities honoring Female General Le Chan, including three principal festival days: her birth anniversary (the 8th day of the second lunar month), the victory anniversary (the 15th day of the eighth lunar month), and her death anniversary (the 13th day of the seventh lunar month). In the past, on the birth anniversary and the victory celebration, villagers organized a procession carrying her statue from Den Nghe to the communal house for worship over ten days. Local clans conducted ritual offerings at the temple and communal house, performed male-official ceremonies, and held wrestling competitions to recall the martial traditions of the coastal troops under her command.
A distinctive feature of offerings presented by the people of An Bien to the altar of Female General Le Chan is the indispensable trio of ritual items: sea crabs, rice vermicelli (known locally as soi), and clams—symbolizing the marine products of the coastal region. After seven to ten days of festivities, the statue would be ceremonially returned to Den Nghe.
Another notable traditional practice was the narcissus flower carving and arranging contest held at Den Nghe in early spring, a unique festival that had long disappeared but has recently been revived and now attracts many artisans. The traditional festival of Female General Le Chan is organized on a grand scale, featuring a wide range of cultural and artistic activities such as water puppetry, ca tru singing, classical cheo opera, performances of traditional musical instruments, and reenactments of folk games. Notably, the festival also includes the practice of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity: the Vietnamese Mother Goddess Worship of the Three Realms.
Classification
With its outstanding historical and artistic values, An Bien Communal House was designated a National Historical Monument in 2009. This recognition represents a well-deserved acknowledgment of local efforts in preserving and promoting cultural and historical heritage.

Maison communale An Bien (Hai Phong)
