Tam Son Communal House (Hai Phong)
Geographic Location and Name
Tam Son Communal House is located in Phu Lien hamlet, formerly part of Trinh Xa canton, Thuy Duong district, Kinh Mon prefecture of Duong Tuyen administrative region. Today, it belongs to Tam Son hamlet, Phu Lien cultural village, Thuy Son commune, Thuy Nguyen district, Hai Phong City. Tam Son Communal House is regarded as a site that preserves exceptionally valuable historical and cultural heritage.
History and Worshipped Figures
During the reign of the eighteenth Hung King, in Phu Lien hamlet, thuộc Giang Nam Trieu region of Xu Dong (now Duc Lien hamlet, Thuy Son commune, Thuy Nguyen district, Hai Phong), there lived a Trinh family known for their strong sense of morality and close bonds with the village community. Although their life was modest and frugal, they were kind-hearted and always willing to help those in hardship or distress.
In the year Mau Dan, Mrs. Ho Thi Mai, the wife of Mr. Trinh Doc Man, gave birth to triplet sons on the twelfth day, at the Dan hour. The eldest was named Trinh Thao, the second Trinh Tham, and the youngest Trinh Mon. All three were handsome and dignified in appearance. The villagers rejoiced for the Trinh couple and said, “The Trinh family has devoted itself to accumulating virtue, and Heaven has bestowed blessings and fortune upon them.” The couple lovingly raised their three sons to adulthood. Gifted by nature and endowed with intelligence, as they grew older, the three brothers clearly surpassed their peers. As time passed, they devoted themselves to literary studies and martial training. By the age of seventeen, their reputation had spread throughout the region.
Hearing of their talent, King Hung sent envoys to summon them to the royal court. Upon meeting them, seeing their noble bearing and hearing their eloquent responses, the king recognized them as extraordinary talents. He was greatly pleased and appointed the three brothers to official positions of different ranks.
When King Hung had no male heir to succeed him, Thuc Phan took advantage of the situation and led his troops to invade. King Hung ordered his son-in-law, Tan Vien Son, to command the army in resistance. The three brothers, together with the soldiers, bravely charged into battle. The Thuc forces suffered a decisive defeat and retreated. When news of victory reached the court, the king was overjoyed and bestowed rewards upon the generals and soldiers. The three brothers were retained to assist in defending the capital at Phong Chau, and the king granted Trinh Thao the title of Quang Ho, Trinh Tham the title of Pho Ho, and Trinh Mon the title of Ung Ho.
Thereafter, the country enjoyed peace and stability, and the people lived and worked in security. The three brothers requested permission to return to their native village for a visit. Upon hearing the news, the villagers enthusiastically welcomed them. The brothers held ceremonies to honor their ancestors, hosted feasts for the villagers, and used the gold and silver bestowed by the king to purchase farmland for the people, build an ancestral hall, and establish shrines for the hamlet. After completing these tasks, they escorted their parents back to the capital at Phong Chau to care for them more conveniently. The three brothers married and had a total of twenty children, none of whom returned to the old homeland.
According to the sacred genealogy (Than Pha), Trinh Thao passed away on the twelfth day of the third lunar month; Trinh Tham on the twelfth day of the eighth lunar month; and Trinh Mon on the twelfth day of the eleventh lunar month. Through successive dynasties, whenever the country achieved victory in warfare, kings believed that they received “yin assistance and yang support” from the spirits, and thus conferred additional honorific titles upon the three brothers, from the Ly dynasty through the Tran, Le, and Nguyen dynasties.
After the passing of the three brothers, to commemorate their merits, the people of Phu Lien hamlet established temples for worship. Among them, Tam Son Communal House is specifically dedicated to Quang Ho Cu Sy Dai Vuong Trinh Thao.
The communal house preserves many invaluable historical relics, notably seven royal decrees dating from the sixth year of Tu Duc (1853) to the ninth year of Khai Dinh (1924), as well as the village convention (huong uoc) of Tam Son village, which has been recognized by the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences.
Over many dynasties, whenever victories were achieved, kings believed that the three deities provided spiritual assistance, and thus continued to grant them additional honorific titles (from the Ly to the Tran, Le, and Nguyen dynasties). To this day, beyond preserving the spiritual beliefs of the villagers, Tam Son Communal House not only worships a sacred human tutelary deity but also serves as a place to remember and preserve ancient traditional cultural values, clearly expressing the Vietnamese tradition of “remembering the source of one’s water” and national moral principles.
Architecture and Landscape
Tam Son Communal House is situated within a traditional village setting, bearing an ancient and solemn appearance that is dignified yet not monumental, reflecting the typical characteristics of communal houses in the northern coastal delta region. The overall architectural layout is compact and harmonious with the surrounding landscape. The front of the communal house faces a wide courtyard paved with red bricks, creating an open space for community activities and traditional rituals.
The roof is covered with brownish-red mui hai tiles, evenly sloping on both sides, with gently curved and graceful roof corners. The ridge and eaves are decorated with motifs of dragons in adoration and traditional patterns, standing out against the subdued tiled roof, serving both aesthetic and spiritual functions. In front of the communal house are placed a stone incense burner and a pair of stone lanterns, enhancing the solemnity of the sacred space.
The enclosing walls and exterior architectural details are mainly constructed from traditional materials such as brick, stone, and wood, creating a sense of durability and rustic simplicity. Although the exterior of Tam Son Communal House is not elaborately ornate, it still conveys an air of reverence and antiquity, consistent with its role as the spiritual and cultural center of the local community.
The interior of Tam Son Communal House has been preserved and remains in use, despite its relatively modest architectural scale. The structure follows traditional wooden architecture, consisting of three bays of the front hall (dai bai) and two bays of the rear sanctuary (hau cung), arranged along a longitudinal axis to ensure continuity and unity in the worship space.
The wooden frame system, with columns, beams, and trusses tightly joined together, demonstrates traditional carpentry techniques. The dai bai serves as the main space for ritual ceremonies and communal religious activities, while the hau cung at the rear is the most sacred area, housing the spirit tablets and principal ritual objects. The roof is tiled with mui tiles, and the interior structure of the trusses is clearly visible, creating a sense of solidity and solemnity.
The floor is paved with traditional bat bricks, which help prevent dampness while also providing aesthetic value. Although the interior decoration is relatively simple and not heavily carved, it retains a quiet and sacred atmosphere, clearly reflecting the long-standing spiritual life of the residents of Tam Son village.
Festival
According to local custom, the Tam Son Communal House Festival (Hai Phong) is held annually on the twelfth day of the third lunar month and constitutes an important cultural and religious event for the local community. The festival consists of two main parts: the ritual ceremonies and the festive activities, organized in a solemn manner that harmoniously combines spiritual elements with folk cultural practices.
The ritual part is conducted according to traditional procedures, bearing the distinct cultural identity of villages in the northern coastal plain. It begins with the incense-offering ceremony and the cao yet rite at the communal house, respectfully informing the deities and village tutelary spirit of the opening of the festival. This is followed by the main sacrificial rites, performed by village elders and dignitaries in a dignified manner, strictly observing traditional ceremonial protocols. The content of the rituals expresses reverence and gratitude for the merits of the tutelary deities who have protected the villagers, while also praying for national peace, favorable weather, abundant harvests, prosperity, and a peaceful life for the people.
The festive part takes place immediately after the rituals, creating a joyful and lively atmosphere for the community during the festival days. Various cultural, artistic, and traditional folk games are organized, attracting large numbers of local residents and visitors. Typical activities include performances of folk arts, community cultural exchanges, and collective games, all of which contribute to strengthening community bonds. Through these festivities, local traditional cultural values are preserved and promoted, while also meeting the people’s need for healthy recreation and entertainment.
The Tam Son Communal House Festival is not only an expression of the distinctive spiritual life of the local residents but also contributes to reinforcing village solidarity and educating younger generations about the tradition of gratitude and remembrance of ancestors. With its historical, cultural, and social significance, the festival has become one of the most representative cultural activities of the locality, attracting numerous participants and visitors each year.
