Năm 1729, lực lượng do Prea Sot cầm đầu quấy nhiễu Gia Định bị quân Nguyễn đánh bại. Năm 1732, ông đặt sở Điều khiển tại Sài Gòn, củng cố bộ máy chỉ huy ở Gia Định – Trấn Biên. Cùng năm, vua Chân Lạp Satha II xin quy thuận và dâng đất Mỹ Tho, Vĩnh Long; triều đình tổ chức lại hành chính, lập châu Định Viễn, dựng dinh Long Hồ, đưa lưu dân khai khẩn, củng cố chủ quyền thực tế.

Lang Truong Phong is the burial site of Nguyen Phuc Chu (1697–1738), posthumously titled Tuc Ton Hieu Ninh Hoang de. He was the seventh of the nine Nguyen lords who ruled Dang Trong (Cochinchina) and was commonly known as Chua Ninh.

The mausoleum is located at Dinh Mon Mountain, Dinh Mon Village, Huong Tho Commune, Huong Tra Town, Hue. The site lies on the left bank of the Ta Trach River, near Truong Phong Creek, approximately 2 km from the riverbank and about 600 m west–northwest of Lang Gia Long. It belongs to an area densely concentrated with the mausoleums of the Nguyen lords and the emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty.

History and Historical Figure
History of Construction and Restoration

Chua Ninh reigned for 13 years before passing away. He died on the 20th day of the 4th lunar month of the year Mau Ngo (1738) at the age of 43. His tomb was built in Dinh Mon Village, Huong Tra, and named Truong Phong.

According to Kham dinh Dai Nam hoi dien su le (Ministry of Public Works, Volume 216), in 1808 Emperor Gia Long ordered the construction and restoration of 17 mausoleums of the Nguyen lords and their consorts of the previous regime. Lang Truong Phong, the burial place of Nguyen Phuc Chu, was among those rebuilt and renovated during this period.

The policy of restoring and constructing the mausoleums of the Nguyen lords and their consorts affirmed the legitimacy of the dynasty and expressed gratitude to the ancestors who laid the foundation for the Nguyen Dynasty.

In 2024, the mausoleum underwent restoration of several deteriorated structures, organized by the Nguyen Phuoc Clan Council.

Historical Figure

Nguyen Phuc Chu (1697–1738), also known as Nguyen Phuc Tru or Nguyen Phuc Thu, posthumously honored as Nguyen Tuc Tong, was the seventh Nguyen lord in Dang Trong. He was the eldest son of Nguyen Phuc Chu and Tu Hue Phu nhan Tong Thi Duoc (posthumously titled Hieu Minh Hoang hau). In 1725, after his father’s death, he succeeded to the throne and ruled until 1738, during which Dang Trong achieved extensive territorial expansion and relative stability.

Before ascending the throne, he held the military ranks of Cai co and Chuong co, was granted the title Dinh Thinh hau, and participated in military affairs and state administration, thereby gaining substantial governing experience.

After taking power, he focused on consolidating internal governance: promoting agriculture, rectifying social customs, and prohibiting social vices. In 1729, he established a minting workshop to regulate currency circulation and strengthen financial capacity. He continued the policy of employing frontier elites by appointing Mac Thien Tu, son of Mac Cuu, as Tong binh Dai do doc of Ha Tien (1736), thereby ensuring stability in the far South. In 1737, the court reformed official ranks, dress codes, and customs, shaping a distinctive civil administrative identity for Dang Trong.

In foreign and military affairs, he effectively managed instability involving Chan Lap. In 1729, forces led by Prea Sot harassed Gia Dinh but were defeated by Nguyen troops. In 1732, he established a Dieu khien office in Sai Gon, consolidating command in Gia Dinh – Tran Bien. That same year, King Satha II of Chan Lap submitted allegiance and ceded the territories of My Tho and Vinh Long. The Nguyen administration reorganized these areas, establishing Dinh Vien Chau and setting up Long Ho dinh, encouraging settlers to cultivate the land and reinforcing de facto sovereignty.

In subsequent years, the government continued to strengthen administrative control over the southern region, installing Western-adapted clocks in administrative headquarters (1733) and organizing expeditionary forces to Cao Mien (1735), thereby enhancing supervision, defense, and expansion of the Mekong Delta region.

Overall, the reign of Nguyen Phuc Chu marked a period of internal consolidation, institutional reform, and the acceleration of effective territorial establishment and governance in the southern region.

The mausoleum is oriented along a north-facing main axis, a common orientation in the funerary architecture of the Nguyen lords, creating a solemn and symmetrical spatial arrangement. In overall layout, it follows the typical model of Nguyen lords’ mausoleums, consisting of two enclosing walls:

Outer enclosure: circumference of 28 truong 2 thuoc (approximately 121 m), with walls 6 thuoc 3 tac high (about 2.53 m), forming a relatively large and imposing outer defensive boundary.

Inner enclosure: circumference of 15 truong 3 thuoc 2 tac (approximately 66.5 m), with walls 5 thuoc high (about 2.02 m), defining the central sacred space where the main tomb is located.

In front of the mausoleum is a rectangular courtyard measuring 7.5 m × 28 m, serving as the ceremonial forecourt. A system of 18 steps leads from the lower ground level up to the courtyard, establishing a ritual axis from the entrance gate to the burial site, gradually progressing toward the center.

Inside, the burial mound consists of two tiers:

Upper tier: 145 cm wide, 251 cm long, 20 cm high.

Lower tier: 210 cm wide, 271 cm long, 22 cm high.

This two-level structure creates a stepped form that ensures structural stability while enhancing the solemnity of the tomb.

The screen walls (binh phong) behind the entrance gate and behind the tomb were formerly decorated with motifs of long ma and dragons; however, the original carved details have not been preserved. Additionally, the incense altar typically found in front of many other Nguyen lords’ tombs is no longer present here, resulting in a more simplified architectural appearance compared to its original state.

Niveau supérieur : largeur 145 cm, longueur 251 cm, hauteur 20 cm.
Niveau inférieur : largeur 210 cm, longueur 271 cm, hauteur 22 cm.
