Kem Pagoda (Tan Dung Ward, Bac Ninh Province)

Geographical Location and Name

Kem Pagoda, whose Sino-Vietnamese name is Sung Nham Tu, is located in Kem residential quarter, Nham Bien town, Yen Dung district, Bac Giang province. For a long time, the pagoda has served not only as a place for religious and spiritual activities of local residents but also as a site associated with many historical events. During various periods of national struggle, the site was used as a base and shelter for several insurgent and revolutionary guerrilla forces, including the Yen The insurgents. Because of its outstanding historical and cultural values, Kem Pagoda has been recognized as a Special National Historical Relic, and it is currently carefully preserved and protected by local authorities and cultural agencies. As a result, the pagoda increasingly attracts numerous visitors and Buddhist devotees from different regions who come to admire the scenery, pay respects, and offer incense.

According to local folk belief, the Nham Bien mountain range, when viewed from a distance, resembles two horses standing side by side. The space between these two “horses” forms a small valley known as Nham Son Pass. Within the mountain gap, at the entrance of Nham Son Pass belonging to the Nham Bien range, stands an ancient pagoda quietly nestled in nature. That pagoda is Sung Nham Tu, commonly known by its vernacular name Kem Pagoda.

Kem Pagoda lies about 12 km southeast of the center of Bac Giang city. Situated amid mountains and valleys, the pagoda not only possesses an ancient charm but also harmonizes with the majestic natural landscape, creating a tranquil and sacred environment that carries both cultural-religious value and profound historical significance.

History and Worshipped Figures

According to Han-Nom documents currently preserved at the pagoda, Kem Pagoda (Sung Nham Tu) was originally founded in the year Dinh Hoi. However, due to the nature of ancient record-keeping, modern researchers estimate that the construction date may correspond to one of three possible years: 1527, 1587, or 1647. Although the exact year has not yet been definitively determined, it is clear that the pagoda has existed for several centuries.

The person credited with initiating the construction of the pagoda was Hoang Thi Tue, a female Buddhist practitioner belonging to the Truc Lam Yen Tu Zen lineage, the school founded by Giac Hoang Dieu Ngu Tran Nhan Tong. The fact that a female devotee mobilized the construction of the pagoda demonstrates the influence of Truc Lam Buddhism in the religious life of the local population and also reflects the close connection between Kem Pagoda and the Buddhist tradition of the Yen Tu region.

Beyond its religious function, Kem Pagoda is also closely linked to many important historical events in the nation’s resistance against foreign invasion. In 1884, Nguyen Cao (full name Nguyen The Cao, courtesy name Trac Hien), from Cach Bi village in present-day Que Vo district of Bac Ninh province, together with his insurgent forces established a base here to resist the French colonial army.

More notably, during the period 1906–1908, Hoang Hoa Tham and the Yen The insurgent army chose the area around Kem Pagoda as a military encampment. Here they built defensive ramparts, constructed living quarters, and organized military training, transforming the pagoda area into an important base of the Yen The uprising against French colonial rule. Many traces of that period are still preserved within the pagoda complex today, such as defensive walls, the foundation of the Quan House, the Quan Well, the flagpole, and guard posts—historical remnants that testify to the role of Kem Pagoda in the local resistance movement.

During the anti-French resistance war in the twentieth century, Kem Pagoda continued to serve as a revolutionary site. In 1950, it hosted a meeting of the Inter-communal Military Delegation of Quang Trung and Yen Lu communes to discuss strategies for dealing with enemy military sweeps. During 1951–1952, the pagoda was also used as a place to provide first aid and care for wounded soldiers, becoming an important rear-base supporting the resistance forces.

These historical layers accumulated through many periods have made Kem Pagoda not only an ancient Buddhist site of religious value but also a place of special importance in the revolutionary history of the Bac Giang region.

Architectural Landscape

Today, Kem Pagoda consists of five main architectural components: the Tam Quan gate, the Tam Bao hall, the Patriarch Hall, the Stupa Garden, and the Mother Goddess Shrine. These structures were built according to the traditional architectural style of Vietnamese pagodas, combining elements of the Le Trung Hung period (eighteenth century) and the Nguyen period (nineteenth to twentieth centuries). This combination creates an ancient and solemn appearance for the entire complex while also reflecting the process of construction and restoration through different historical stages.

Alongside its architectural heritage, Kem Pagoda preserves many valuable artifacts, including statues, ritual objects, horizontal lacquered boards, parallel couplets, and Han-Nom documents. These materials are valuable sources for understanding the history of the pagoda, its religious activities, and its traditional artistic values. Beyond their religious significance, they also hold important research value for the study of Vietnamese history, culture, and art.

Many relics from earlier historical periods remain visible today, such as defensive ramparts, the foundation of Quan House, Quan Well, the flagpole, and guard posts, all of which stand as important historical evidence.

In addition to its historical and architectural significance, the pagoda also preserves several valuable ancient artifacts. Among the most notable are a four-sided stone stele recording the establishment of a Hau Phat dedication, created in the second year of the Chinh Hoa reign (1682), and the Thanh Phong stupa stele, erected in the eleventh lunar month of the thirty-sixth year of the Canh Hung reign (1775). Another important inscription is the stele titled “Tu Su Bi Ky,” erected in the eighteenth year of the Thanh Thai reign. Besides these inscriptions, the temple’s worship system preserves numerous artifacts from different historical periods, reflecting the long development of the pagoda.

Festival

Every year, the festival of Kem Pagoda is held on the 21st day of the eighth lunar month, attracting large numbers of local residents and visitors from many regions. The festival is not only an occasion to commemorate ancestors and express devotion to the Buddha and sacred beings but also a traditional cultural event that helps preserve and promote the historical and cultural values of this ancient pagoda.

Heritage Status

With its outstanding historical and cultural significance, Kem Pagoda is one of the 23 relic sites and clusters belonging to the historical complex “Sites of the Yen The Uprising,” which was recognized as a Special National Historical Relic in 2012 (Decision No. 548/QD-TTg dated 10 May 2012 issued by the Prime Minister).
