General Information

In the third lunar month, toward the end of spring, farmers enter a period of relative leisure and begin the festival season. The festival lasts for ten days, from the 1st to the 10th day of the third lunar month, with many important rituals taking place on specific days.

Day 1: Opening ceremony. The Tran Le lineage (the lineage of the Holy Mother) performs rituals at the Main Palace, then proceeds to offer rituals at the Le ancestral house in the Inner and Outer Palaces. On the same day, Van Cat Palace also begins its participation, with villagers responsible for the rites.

Day 2: In the evening, a ritual ceremony and water procession take place. The procession carries torches and collects water in porcelain jars, which is then used for the bathing ritual of the Holy Mother statue (moc duc).

Day 3: Death anniversary of the Holy Mother, formerly conducted as a state-level ritual. Offerings include incense, flowers, 100 large round sticky rice cakes, and a live pig. At Van Cat Palace, a parallel ceremony is held on a large scale with offerings such as roasted buffalo, roasted cattle, boiled pork (tam sinh), along with hundreds of pairs of cakes and incense.

Days 4–5: Ritual ceremonies continue, performed by village dignitaries in rotation according to established order.

Day 6: The procession of the Holy Mother from Tien Huong Palace to Goi Pagoda takes place. This is the largest procession of the entire festival, stretching nearly one kilometer, with participation from Buddhist monks and nuns, Dao Mau followers, officials, and dragon and lion dance troupes, creating a solemn yet vibrant atmosphere.

Days 7–9: The character-forming performance (keo chu) takes place, a unique feature of the festival. Each formation requires more than one hundred participants dressed in uniform with red headscarves, yellow shirts, green belts, white trousers, and red leggings, holding long sticks about two meters in length. The leader, called tong co, directs the formation after a ritual requesting the Holy Mother to “grant characters.” The formations create auspicious phrases such as “Thien ha thai binh.”

Location

The Phu Giay Festival is held at the Phu Giay complex in Kim Thai commune (formerly An Thai), Vu Ban district, Nam Ha province, about 15 km from Nam Dinh city. This is a vast delta region with expansive rice fields, interspersed with low limestone hills, prosperous villages, and gently winding rivers.

Phu Giay was formerly known as Ke Giay. After Lieu Hanh was granted the title of princess, the site became known as a “phu” (palace). The complex dedicated to the Holy Mother includes the Main Palace, Van Cat Palace, and the Mausoleum of Princess Lieu.

The Main Palace is a large structure with three worship halls facing south. In front stands a round well and a flagpole, while the courtyard contains stele houses, drum houses, and gong houses. Inside, Princess Lieu is worshipped alongside the Four Palaces system, with Mau Thuong Thien incarnated as Lieu Hanh at the center.

Nearby is Van Cat Palace, featuring a semicircular lake and an elaborately carved stone bridge. The palace includes five gates and four sanctuaries, with Princess Lieu at the center, a Buddhist pagoda on the left, and a shrine dedicated to Ly Nam De on the right.

Close to the Main Palace is the Mausoleum of Princess Lieu, constructed of stone in the early 20th century. The tomb is octagonal and elevated, with entrances and stairways on all sides. Surrounding it are layered stone railings, with lotus bud carvings on walls and pillars, creating a unique landscape resembling a stone lotus pond.

The area around Phu Giay also contains numerous other shrines such as Kham Sai Temple, Cong Dong Temple, Thuong Temple, Quan Temple, Duc Vua Temple, Gieng Temple, Cay Da Temple, and Ong Khong Communal House.

Origin

Phu Giay is associated with the worship of the Holy Mother Lieu Hanh, one of the most important deities in the Mother Goddess worship tradition of Viet Nam. After being granted the title of princess, the Ke Giay area became a major center of her worship and gradually came to be known as Phu Giay.

According to legend, Lieu Hanh was originally Princess Quynh Hoa, daughter of the Jade Emperor. After committing a fault (breaking a jade cup), she was banished to the human world in 1557. Reborn into the family of Le Thai Cong, a virtuous scholar, she became known as Giang Tien, a talented woman skilled in music and poetry. She composed and exchanged poems with Dao Lan (her husband) and renowned scholars such as Phung Khac Khoan.

Later, while associated with Buddhism, she was believed to spiritually assist the royal court, suppress enemies, and help people overcome calamities. Traveling widely and performing good deeds, she was venerated by the people as the Holy Mother, and temples were established in her honor.

The Phu Giay Festival thus developed over a long period and became one of the major festivals associated with the Mother Goddess belief system.

Rituals

The ritual section includes many traditional ceremonies such as offerings and processions dedicated to the Holy Mother.

The first day begins with offering rituals including incense, flowers, and wine. In the following days, ceremonies are conducted by villagers and local officials.

The most notable ritual is the procession of the Holy Mother from the Main Palace to Goi Pagoda on the 6th day of the third lunar month. The palanquin carrying the incense burner is richly decorated with flags and parasols. Participants are mostly women dressed in colorful attire. Young unmarried girls are selected to carry the palanquin, while middle-aged women carry banners and flags.

The procession moves in a lively atmosphere of traditional music, drums, and loudspeakers, accompanied by large numbers of pilgrims.

In addition, during the festival there are distinctive Dao Mau practices such as hat van and hau dong. These are integrated performance rituals combining music, singing, dance, and worship. Musicians perform specific melodies corresponding to each spirit possession sequence, while mediums enact rituals before the altar, representing deities of the Four Palaces system.

Festival Activities

The festival section is vibrant with various folk cultural activities.

The most distinctive event is the character-forming festival held on the 7th day of the third lunar month. Administrative units in Vu Ban district send flag bearers, each contributing around ten participants to form a large team. They wear yellow shirts, white trousers, black headscarves, and carry long decorated sticks.

Under the commands of the leader and drum signals, participants move and arrange themselves into large characters in the courtyard. Common formations include “Mau nghi thien ha,” “Thien ha thai binh,” “Thach cap sinh dan,” and “Van hanh vu thi.”

Other activities include traditional performances such as tuong, cheo, trong quan singing, xam singing, and ca tru; as well as competitions like wrestling, martial arts, tug of war, chess playing, and cockfighting.

Festival markets are also held, where people sell local products such as La Xuyen woodwork, lacquerware, mother-of-pearl inlay items, household goods, and various handicrafts. Visitors not only participate in spiritual activities but also shop and enjoy local cuisine, notably rare beef served with ginger sauce.

A traditional folk verse about the festival says:
