Truong Quoc Dung (1797–1864)
Background
Truong Quoc Dung was born on the 5th day of the twelfth lunar month in the year Dinh Ty (1797) in Phong Phu village, now part of Thach Khe commune, Thach Ha district, Ha Tinh province. His family originally came from Thang Long (Hanoi) and migrated to settle in Phong Phu in 1549. From then on, the Truong lineage developed a strong scholarly tradition, with many generations serving as officials in the royal court.
Many members of his family achieved academic success and held important positions. His great-grandfather was Truong Quoc Nhin, who served as Chief Guard of the imperial capital Thang Long under the Later Le dynasty. His grandfather was Truong Quoc Ky, who ranked first among Huong Cong candidates in the examination of 1753 and later served as tutor to Crown Prince Le Duy Vi. His father was Tu Tai Truong Quoc Bao, a well-known and erudite teacher who was granted the title Trung thuan dai phu by the court. His mother was Tran Thi Cuong.
Examinations and Official Career
From a young age, Truong Quoc Dung showed intelligence, diligence in study, and a special love for books. He was known in the region as a hardworking person with quick comprehension and early literary talent. Thanks to strict family education and a tradition of scholarly achievement, he made steady progress and soon participated in imperial examinations. During the reign of Emperor Minh Mang, in 1821 he passed the Tu Tai examination. In 1825 he passed the Cu Nhan degree, and in the Ky Suu examination of 1829 he obtained the Tien Si degree, marking an important turning point in his academic and official career.
After succeeding in the examinations, in 1830 he was appointed Tri phu of Tan Binh prefecture (in Gia Dinh). This marked the beginning of his official career, when he started participating in local administration. Some time later, he was recalled to the capital Hue to serve as Bien tu at the Han Lam Institute, the agency responsible for drafting and editing royal documents. Through his ability and accumulated experience, he was gradually promoted to Lang trung of the Ministry of Justice. However, during his service he once committed an error and was dismissed from office. Later, the court allowed him to work in the Ministry of Personnel so that he could redeem himself through service.
In 1833 he was reinstated as Tu vu and assigned to the military command in Phien An (Gia Dinh). There he worked under the senior advisor Truong Minh Giang, assisting in handling important military matters. Specifically, he contributed to suppressing the uprising of Le Van Khoi and participated in resisting the Siamese forces that invaded Cochinchina in 1833–1834. After the situation stabilized, his contributions were recognized and he was promoted successively to positions such as Chu su and then Vien ngoai lang of the Ministry of Revenue. Later he was appointed An sat su in Quang Ngai and Hung Yen provinces, responsible for inspection, supervision, and legal matters at the local level.
In the first year of Emperor Thieu Tri (1841), Truong Quoc Dung was summoned back to the capital to handle affairs at the Ministry of Rites, the body responsible for rituals, education, and cultural activities of the court. Not long afterward, he was promoted to Ta thi lang, a high-ranking position in the ministry. During his service he held various posts in major ministries such as Personnel, Justice, and Public Works, demonstrating the court’s trust in his abilities. In 1846 he was further promoted to Acting Ta Tham tri of the Ministry of Public Works, in charge of matters related to construction, irrigation, and state projects.
Death in Battle
In the first year of Emperor Tu Duc (1848), Truong Quoc Dung submitted a memorial to the court presenting four important issues concerning governance and social management. The main points included: careful use of state finances and resources; greater attention and compassion in criminal cases to avoid wrongful convictions; reduction of unnecessary expenditures; and reform of shortcomings among the scholar-official class. Emperor Tu Duc highly appreciated this memorial and approved its implementation.
Recognizing his talent and knowledge, the emperor appointed him Kinh dien giang quan, responsible for lecturing Confucian classics to the emperor in court study sessions. At the same time, he was also assigned to oversee the Imperial Astronomical Bureau and to hold the seal of the Censorate, which supervised officials of the court. Later he was promoted to Shang thu (Minister) of the Ministry of Justice, the highest authority in charge of law and judicial affairs, and concurrently appointed Chief Compiler at the National History Office, participating in directing the compilation and management of official histories. Historical records also show that he was several times sent by the court to the northern region to supervise and grade provincial and metropolitan examinations, reflecting his scholarly reputation at the time.
In the fifth lunar month of 1862, the situation in Northern Vietnam became complicated when the forces of Ta Van Phung besieged Hai Duong provincial citadel. In response, the court appointed Truong Quoc Dung, then serving as Minister of Justice, to take charge of military command in the area. The emperor assigned him as Hai Yen Military Governor, responsible for organizing and mobilizing troops against the insurgent forces.
From Hung Yen, Truong Quoc Dung, together with generals Dao Tri and Phan Tam Tinh, led troops into battle. After a period of fighting, the royal army recaptured Binh Giang prefecture and later Hai Duong citadel. However, when he entered the citadel through the western gate, enemy forces suddenly organized a siege. In this critical situation, he devised a counterattack from inside the citadel, organizing troops to break the encirclement and eventually defeating the siege. After this battle, the court recognized his achievements and promoted him to Hiep ta, while Dao Tri was promoted to Thong che.
In 1863, Truong Quoc Dung was further promoted to Hiep bien Dai hoc si, a high-ranking position among civil officials of the Nguyen dynasty. Despite holding a high court rank, he continued to serve as military governor, directly commanding troops in the northern battlefield.
In the sixth lunar month of 1864, the Hai Yen military force under his command fought fiercely with the forces of Ta Van Phung at La Khe, now in Tien An commune, Yen Hung district, Quang Ninh province. In this battle, the Nguyen army fell into a disadvantage when it was tightly surrounded by the enemy’s combined naval and land forces. The fighting was extremely intense and caused heavy losses. Truong Quoc Dung, then serving as Hiep thong, together with Tan ly Van Duc Khue and Tan tuong Tran Huy San, died in battle. Commander Ho Thien was captured alive by the enemy but refused to surrender and later committed suicide. Many soldiers of the royal army were wounded or killed in the battle.
Works
Truong Quoc Dung produced several main works, mostly written in classical Chinese, including:
- Truong Nhu Trung thi tap: a collection of poems composed by him, reflecting his thought, emotions, and literary ability.
- Thoai thuc ky van (8 volumes): a comprehensive work recording various historical, social, and daily-life matters, including:

Trương Quoc Dung (1797–1864)
Origines familiales
