Background and Career

Crown Prince Duy Vy was the eldest son of Emperor Le Hien Tong. He was born in 1745 (the 6th year of the Canh Hung era) in the imperial capital Thang Long. He was born and raised during a period in which real political power did not lie in the hands of the Le emperors but was concentrated in those of the Trinh lords. The Le kings effectively “withdrew from governance,” while all state affairs were decided by the Trinh household. At that time, the Trinh Lord’s Residence was under the authority of Minh Do Vuong Trinh Doanh. Emperor Le Hien Tong himself obtained the throne thanks to Trinh Doanh, who compelled Le Y Tong to abdicate in favor of Le Hien Tong; consequently, the emperor became even more passive and showed no will to regain military or political power.

In 1764, Emperor Le Hien Tong appointed his eldest son Le Duy Vy as Crown Prince. Kham dinh Viet su thong giam cuong muc records:

“First month, spring. The king appointed his son Duy Vy as Crown Prince. Duy Vy, the king’s eldest son, was intelligent and studious; Trinh Doanh held him in great respect. He was now established as heir apparent.”

Trinh Doanh’s attitude toward Duy Vy appears quite favorable. Perhaps for this reason, he married his eldest daughter, Tien Dung Quan chua, to the crown prince. The Cuong muc further records:

“When the Crown Prince was young, he was intelligent and quick, well-versed in the Classics and Histories, and very courteous toward scholars; no subject failed to admire his demeanor and bearing. Trinh Doanh highly valued his talent, and therefore married his eldest daughter, Princess Tien Dung, to him.”

Marital alliances between the Le royal house and the Trinh lords had existed since the time of Thanh Do Vuong Trinh Trang, who allowed his daughter Ngoc Truc Quan chua to remarry Emperor Le Than Tong. The marriage of Princess Tien Dung thus both strengthened the intimate ties between the Le and Trinh families and revealed Trinh Doanh’s intention that Crown Prince Duy Vy would one day inherit the throne.

Conflict with Trinh Sam

The Nguyen-dynasty Kham dinh Viet su thong giam cuong muc records the conflict between Crown Prince Le Duy Vy and Lord Trinh Sam as follows:

“The Crown Prince had long been resentful that the Le house had lost political authority and was determined to reclaim the reins of power. When Trinh Sam grew older and became heir to the Trinh lordship, he harbored jealousy toward the Crown Prince’s rank and abilities.

One day, the Crown Prince and Sam were at the Trinh Residence and were granted a meal by the lord, who told them to sit together at one mat. The wife of Trinh Doanh, Nguyen Thi, intervened, saying: ‘The Trinh heir and the Crown Prince have the hierarchical relation of subject and sovereign; how can they sit at the same mat? They must sit separately.’

Sam changed his expression, left abruptly, and told others: ‘Between Duy Vy and me, one must die for the other to live; the two of us cannot stand side by side.’”

Deposition

When Trinh Sam ascended as the new Trinh lord, he, along with eunuch Hoang Ngu Phuc and Pham Huy Dinh, secretly plotted to depose the Crown Prince. Unable to find grounds for accusation, they fabricated a charge that the Crown Prince had illicit relations with a concubine from Trinh Doanh’s residence and submitted a memorial calling for his arrest. This took place in the third month of the 30th year of the Canh Hung era (1769).

Earlier, strange thunder-like noises had been heard from the Tam Son Well behind the palace. The prince, fearing a bad omen, reported it to the emperor, who frequently prayed for his safety. Upon hearing of the false accusation, the Crown Prince took refuge in the emperor’s private quarters.

Pham Huy Dinh entered the Crown Prince’s residence and, not finding him there, went directly into the imperial hall, presented the accusation, and declared that the prince was hiding in the emperor’s chambers. He requested permission to seize him. Emperor Le held tightly to his son and refused to let him go; Huy Dinh knelt outside waiting. Realizing there was no escape, the prince wept, bowed to the emperor, and surrendered himself.

When brought to the Trinh Residence, Huy Dinh demanded that he remove his headgear and confess. The Crown Prince firmly refused, saying:

“You are accustomed to dethroning kings and installing kings, even killing kings—acts of treason. What crime have I committed? This matter will be recorded in history for all ages.”

Trinh Sam then falsely issued a decree in the emperor’s name, stripped the prince of his title, reduced him to commoner status, and imprisoned him.

In the eighth month of that year, Trinh Sam appointed Le Duy Can, the fifth son of Emperor Hien Tong, as the new Crown Prince. Duy Can frequently visited the Trinh Residence and attended to Thai phi Hoa Dung with great humility; she was pleased, and Trinh Sam felt reassured in his decision.

In the twelfth month of the year Tan Mao, Trinh Sam executed Duy Vy. Earlier he had intended to kill him but lacked a pretext. Eventually, Hoang Ngu Phuc and Pham Huy Dinh used an informant to accuse Tran Trong Lam, Nguyen Huu Ky, and several retainers of the prince—such as Vu Ba Xuong and Luong Gian—of plotting to raise troops to rescue him.

Ba Xuong was arrested and tortured; his confession implicated Nguyen Le, who declared:

“The Crown Prince is the rightful heir of the realm. Now he is innocent yet imprisoned in humiliation; planning to rescue him would be an act of righteousness. But I knew nothing of this plot.

If I were forced under torture to confess falsely, I would lack both courage and integrity.

Moreover, the prince is in prison, not even his wife or children may visit him—how could I have met him to plan such a thing? I have nothing more to say except that I must die.”

Nguyen Le was beaten until his flesh was torn, but he never changed his testimony. Pham Huy Dinh drafted a fabricated indictment. Trinh Sam ordered him to strangle the Crown Prince and executed Nguyen Le and Ba Xuong as well.

After Crown Prince Le Duy Vy was killed, his sons—Le Duy Khiem, Le Duy Tru, and Le Duy Chi—were also imprisoned in the De Lanh prison.

Posthumous Honors

When Emperor Le Man De ascended the throne, he posthumously honored his father Le Duy Vy as Huu Tong Hoang de and conferred the title Hoang Thai hau upon his mother Nguyen Thi.

Emperor Tu Duc’s Commentary

Emperor Tu Duc, in the Kham dinh Viet su thong giam cuong muc, wrote:

“An event of extreme tragedy, painful for a thousand generations. Reading history to this point makes one’s nose sting with sorrow! This matter, like the breaking of the wall to seize Phuc Hau, is equally heartbreaking.

What is even more infuriating is that at the time the court was full of ministers, yet not one dared to speak a word; only Nguyen Le, implicated in the case, showed moral integrity unto death.

Even Nguyen Thi, mother of Trinh Sam, uttered not a single word to save him—what kind of heart did she possess? It would have been better had she not distinguished the seating arrangements that day. Compared with Vu Thi, Nguyen Thi was far inferior.”
