Cùng năm, hưởng ứng chiếu chỉ sưu tầm sách vở của triều đình, ông dâng lên bộ Gia Định thành thông chí do chính mình biên soạn cùng tác phẩm Bột di ngư văn thảo của Mạc Thiên Tứ, góp phần làm phong phú kho tàng thư tịch quốc gia.

Background
Trịnh Hoài Đức (1765-1825), whose personal name was An, courtesy name Chỉ Sơn, and sobriquet Cấn Trai, was a prominent high-ranking official, scholar, and man of letters under the Nguyễn dynasty. He was also a writer, poet, historian, and geographer who made many important contributions to Vietnamese scholarship in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. In recognition of his services to the court, he was granted by the Nguyễn emperor the title Marquis of An Toàn.
Trịnh Hoài Đức’s ancestors originally came from Fujian, China, and migrated to Đàng Trong under Lord Nguyễn Phúc Tần. At first, his family lived in Phú Xuân, Huế, and later moved to Trấn Biên, Đồng Nai. His father, Trịnh Khánh, came from a family with a tradition of examinations and official service. He was favored by Lord Nguyễn Phúc Khoát and successively held the posts of An Dương Cai thủ and Chấp canh tam trường Cai đội.
Growing up in a family with a tradition of learning and service to the court, Trịnh Hoài Đức received a Confucian education early in life, laying the foundation for his later political and scholarly career. He became one of the outstanding scholars of Southern Vietnam, leaving behind many valuable writings, the most notable of which is Gia Định thành thông chí, a work regarded as one of the most important historical and geographical sources for the study of the history, geography, and culture of early Southern Vietnam.
Historical Context
Trịnh Hoài Đức was born during a period of great upheaval in the country’s history. At the age of ten, after his father passed away, he followed his mother to Gia Định and studied under the eminent Confucian scholar Võ Trường Toản in Hòa Hưng village. This was a well-known center of Confucian education in Southern Vietnam in the late eighteenth century, where many talented men of the southern region were trained. Among his fellow students were Ngô Tùng Châu and Lê Quang Định, both of whom later became important ministers of the Nguyễn dynasty. The educational environment created by Võ Trường Toản not only equipped him with Confucian knowledge but also nurtured a spirit of loyalty and righteousness, as well as a sense of responsibility toward the nation, deeply influencing the thought and career of Trịnh Hoài Đức.
His youth also coincided with the outbreak of the Tây Sơn movement. From 1771 onward, the Tây Sơn uprising quickly developed into a large-scale civil war, changing the political situation of Đàng Trong. By 1777, when Tây Sơn forces attacked Gia Định, many members of the Nguyễn family, along with loyal officials and scholars, had to scatter or take refuge. In these circumstances, Trịnh Hoài Đức and his family went to Chenla, present-day Cambodia, to avoid the fighting. This event not only reflected the severity of the times but also profoundly affected his maturation, shaping his awareness of the nation’s fate and strengthening his attachment to Nguyễn Ánh’s forces in their later effort to restore the Nguyễn family’s cause.
Career
After Nguyễn Ánh recovered Gia Định, in 1788 Trịnh Hoài Đức took part in a talent-selection examination organized by the Nguyễn lord and passed. He was appointed Hàn lâm chế cáo, officially beginning his path as an official. The following year, he was appointed District Magistrate of Tân Bình and concurrently held the post of Điền tuấn, in charge of land reclamation and agricultural development in Gia Định. This was an important duty in restoring production, stabilizing the people’s livelihood, and building a rear base for Nguyễn Ánh’s forces while the war against the Tây Sơn was still continuing.
Thanks to his ability and learning, Trịnh Hoài Đức was continuously entrusted with many important responsibilities. He once held the position of Đông Cung Thị giảng, directly lecturing Crown Prince Nguyễn Phúc Cảnh. Later, he was assigned to accompany the Crown Prince to guard Diên Khánh Citadel. Subsequently, he successively held the posts of Recorder of Định Tường town and Right Assistant Minister of the Ministry of Revenue, participating in administrative and financial management in Southern Vietnam. During the northern campaign of 1801, he was assigned to take charge of harvesting and transporting grain in Quảng Nam and Quảng Ngãi in order to secure supplies for Nguyễn Ánh’s army.
After Gia Long unified the country and ascended the throne in 1802, Trịnh Hoài Đức was appointed Minister of Revenue and was at the same time sent as chief envoy leading a diplomatic mission to the Qing dynasty to establish relations and report the founding of the new dynasty. This mission made an important contribution to establishing the position and legitimacy of the Nguyễn dynasty in its relations with the Chinese court.
From 1808, he was transferred to Gia Định to serve as Deputy Administrator of Gia Định Citadel, assisting Governor-General Nguyễn Văn Nhơn in managing Southern Vietnam. In the following years, he successively held the posts of Minister of Rites, Minister of Personnel, concurrently managed the Imperial Astronomical Bureau, and was then appointed again as Deputy Governor-General of Gia Định Citadel. When Nguyễn Văn Nhơn returned to the capital in 1820, Trịnh Hoài Đức temporarily assumed the acting position of Governor-General of Gia Định, directly administering one of the most strategic and prosperous regions of the country.
After Emperor Minh Mạng ascended the throne in 1820, Trịnh Hoài Đức was summoned back to the capital to serve as Minister of Personnel, concurrently Minister of War, while also holding the position of Deputy Chief Compiler of the Quốc Sử Quán and being promoted to Associate Grand Secretary. Although he was advanced in age and repeatedly requested that his duties be reduced, the emperor continued to place special trust in him and assigned him many important tasks. In the same year, responding to the court’s edict to collect books, he submitted the Gia Định thành thông chí, compiled by himself, together with Bột di ngư văn thảo by Mạc Thiên Tứ, thereby enriching the national collection of written works.
In his final years, Trịnh Hoài Đức continued to participate in many important political and scholarly activities. In 1821, he accompanied Emperor Minh Mạng on an inspection tour of Bắc Hà and, after the journey, submitted to the emperor two works: Lịch đại kỷ nguyên and Khang tế lục. In 1822, he was appointed examiner for a special grace examination, directly taking part in the selection of talented men for the court. By 1823, due to old age and declining health, he repeatedly submitted memorials asking to retire from office, but his requests were not fully accepted because of the emperor’s special trust in him.
Legacy
The legacy left by Trịnh Hoài Đức was not only political but was especially prominent in the fields of literature, history, and geography. As an erudite scholar, he composed many valuable works in classical Chinese, reflecting both the thoughts and emotions of a Confucian scholar and records of the history, geography, and culture of early nineteenth-century Vietnam.
In poetry, Trịnh Hoài Đức was the author of Cấn Trai thi tập, consisting of three parts: Thối thực truy biên tập, Quan quang tập, and Khả dĩ tập. This collection gathered poems composed between 1783 and 1819 and was woodblock printed in 1819. He also left behind Bắc sứ thi tập, recording poems written during his diplomatic mission to the Qing dynasty; Đi sứ cảm tác, consisting of eighteen Nôm poems written in linked sequence; and he was also one of the three authors of Gia Định tam gia thi tập, a poetry collection by the three men of letters of Gia Định: Trịnh Hoài Đức, Lê Quang Định, and Ngô Nhân Tịnh. His poetry was mainly composed in regulated eight-line seven-character verse, rich in lyricism and combining descriptions of natural scenery, customs, life, and people in the regions where he had lived or passed through.
Besides poetry, Trịnh Hoài Đức also compiled many valuable works on history and scholarship, such as Lịch đại kỷ nguyên and Khang tế lục, reflecting his erudition in researching history, chronology, and matters related to contemporary politics and society.
The most valuable work of Trịnh Hoài Đức is Gia Định thành thông chí, a geographical gazetteer in six volumes written in classical Chinese. Although the exact time of compilation is not stated, studies show that the work was completed under the reign of Gia Long and was submitted by the author to Emperor Minh Mạng in 1820 in response to the court’s edict to collect old books. The contents present a comprehensive account of the natural conditions, terrain, rivers, mountains, administration, customs, products, economy, culture, and people of the Gia Định-Southern Vietnam region in the early nineteenth century. With its rich documentary value and high reliability, Gia Định thành thông chí is regarded as one of the most important geographical gazetteers of Vietnam in the feudal period, and also as a fundamental source for the study of the history, geography, culture, and society of Southern Vietnam. The work was translated into French from the late nineteenth century and remains a valuable reference for researchers both in Vietnam and abroad.
The writings of Trịnh Hoài Đức not only reflect the broad knowledge of an early Nguyễn scholar but also contributed to preserving many valuable materials on Vietnamese history, culture, and geography. In particular, Gia Định thành thông chí affirmed his position as one of the representative geographers and historians of Vietnam in the early modern period, leaving a lasting mark on national scholarship.
Family
His father was named Khánh, while his mother’s personal name is not known.
His wife was from the Lê family. After his death, she was buried together with him in the tomb complex in Biên Hòa, now in Trung Dũng ward, Biên Hòa city, Đồng Nai province. Today, the joint tomb complex of the couple has been classified by the State as a national historical-cultural relic.
Trịnh Hoài Đức had one son named Trịnh Hoài Cẩn. Under the reign of Emperor Thiệu Trị, Trịnh Hoài Cẩn was granted marriage to Princess Tân Hòa Đoan Thận, the thirteenth daughter of Emperor Minh Mạng, and was given the title Phò mã Đô úy, or imperial son-in-law commandant. This marriage shows the recognition and esteem of the Nguyễn royal family for the merits and prestige that Trịnh Hoài Đức had built throughout his service to the court. According to historical records, both Trịnh Hoài Cẩn and Princess Tân Hòa passed away in 1866, under the reign of Emperor Tự Đức.
Death and Worship
In February 1825, Trịnh Hoài Đức passed away in Huế at the age of sixty-one. Emperor Minh Mạng suspended court audiences for three days in mourning, posthumously granted him the title Junior Guardian and Grand Secretary of Cần Chánh Hall, bestowed on him the posthumous name Văn Khắc, and ordered Prince Miên Hoằng to escort his coffin back to Gia Định for burial.
Later, he was worshiped together with other meritorious officials at the Trung Hưng Công Thần Temple and the Hiền Lương Temple, in recognition of his great contributions to the restoration cause of the Nguyễn dynasty.
Today, his tomb complex in Biên Hòa has been recognized as a national historical-cultural relic, becoming a site that preserves historical and cultural values associated with the life of one of the representative eminent officials of the early Nguyễn dynasty.
Assessment and Evaluation
Trịnh Hoài Đức is regarded as one of the representative eminent officials and scholars of the early Nguyễn dynasty. Over more than three decades of service under the reigns of Gia Long and Minh Mạng, he consistently showed the qualities of an official who was loyal to the court, devoted to his work, and wholeheartedly committed to the stability and development of the country. With his profound knowledge and comprehensive administrative ability, he was repeatedly entrusted with important positions in administration, finance, diplomacy, education, and the compilation of history, becoming one of the pillars of the early Nguyễn state apparatus.
Not only outstanding in political ability, Trịnh Hoài Đức was also remembered by later generations as a great scholar who made important contributions to Vietnamese literature, history, and geography. His writings, especially Gia Định thành thông chí, were not only valuable in his own time but also became foundational sources for the study of the history, geography, culture, and society of Southern Vietnam. Thanks to its careful research, meticulous records, and high reliability, this work is still considered one of the most valuable geographical gazetteers of Vietnam in the feudal period.
In terms of character, Trịnh Hoài Đức was a model of an upright and simple official. Although he was repeatedly promoted to high offices such as minister of various ministries and Associate Grand Secretary, he still maintained a modest lifestyle and did not accumulate wealth for himself. According to Đại Nam liệt truyện, because he did not have a private house, Emperor Minh Mạng granted him money and materials to build a residence outside the eastern gate of the capital. This detail clearly reflects Trịnh Hoài Đức’s integrity, while also showing the special trust and esteem that the court held for him.
Overall, Trịnh Hoài Đức embodies the model of a comprehensive Confucian intellectual in early nineteenth-century Vietnamese history: at once a politician, diplomat, educator, writer, poet, historian, and outstanding geographer. His contributions not only helped consolidate the administration of the Nguyễn dynasty in the early period after national unification but also left behind a substantial scholarly legacy of lasting value for Vietnamese history and culture. Therefore, he deserves to be regarded as one of the representative cultural figures of Vietnam under the Nguyễn dynasty.

Origines
