Name and geographical location
Cao Hai Pagoda, whose Sino-Vietnamese name is Chan Phuc Tu, is situated in Cao Hai Hamlet, Tan Lien Commune, Vinh Bao District, Hai Phong City. The pagoda lies in a naturally beautiful landscape with a favorable topography. The village of Cao Hai itself is historically associated with the tragic massacre committed by Ma Yuan’s army after the fall of the Hai Ba Trung uprising in the year 43 CE.
History and architecture
There are no surviving records indicating the exact time of the pagoda’s construction, only that it was built to meet the spiritual needs of the local community.
Chan Phuc Tu has since been restored using modern materials and techniques. The pagoda is modest in scale, facing west, and follows the traditional Dinh-shaped layout — consisting of three front halls (Tien Duong) and one rear sanctuary (Hau Cung). The structure is simple and undecorated, with smooth-finished wooden beams.
To the south of the pagoda stands a stupa, which is the resting place of the founding monk who first propagated the Dharma here. Within the compound, a clear pond adds serenity and freshness to the atmosphere.
Artifacts
Few ancient relics remain in the pagoda today — only two of the original three sets of statues survive. Among them are statues from the Three Worlds Buddhas (Tam The) and a beautifully crafted statue of the Infant Shakyamuni Buddha (Thich Ca So Sinh), stylistically related to the Bao Ha – Dong Minh sculpture tradition of Vinh Bao. The Mother Goddess and Patriarch statues are also uniquely carved, each expressing distinct features and gestures. Other statues of the pagoda are being gradually restored.
In earlier times, the pagoda’s original Buddhist statues were worshipped in the area of the local communal school. During restoration, various old relics were relocated to the current site, including a Patriarch’s stupa and three stone steles titled Hau Phat Bi Ky, which record the names of benefactors who donated to the pagoda’s reconstruction. These steles, inscribed in worn-out Nom script with floral and cloud-pattern borders, date to the early Nguyen dynasty (early 19th century).
Recognition
For its historical and cultural significance, Cao Hai Pagoda was recognized by the People’s Committee of Hai Phong City as a Municipal-level Historical and Cultural Site in 2005.
