Lam Dong Pagoda (Hai Phong)

Name and Geographical Location

Lam Dong Pagoda (also known as Lam Pagoda) is located along an inter-communal road branching off Provincial Road 359, approximately 7 km north of the center of Hai Phong city.

History and Historical Figures

According to oral tradition, in ancient times both Lam Trang and Tung Dong hamlets possessed their own systems of communal houses, pagodas, temples, and shrines to serve the spiritual life of local residents. Among them, Lam Dong Pagoda was situated within the territory of Tung Dong hamlet. To date, no official historical documents have been found that precisely determine the time of the pagoda’s original construction. However, based on survey results, academic research, and materials preserved in local memory, it can be assumed that the pagoda emerged during the Ly–Tran period.

Initially, Lam Dong Pagoda was merely a small village pagoda, serving the basic religious needs of the local population. During the Tran dynasty (1226–1400), together with the strong development of Buddhism, the pagoda was expanded in scale, its architecture gradually completed, and it increasingly affirmed its important role in the spiritual life of the community. From that time onward, Lam Dong Pagoda gradually became one of the most representative Buddhist centers of the Thuy Duong region.

However, during the period when the country fell under Ming domination, Lam Dong Pagoda was severely destroyed, leaving almost no visible traces. It was not until 1927 that Buddhist devotees and local residents jointly contributed labor and resources to restore and renovate the pagoda. This restoration aimed not only to revive a traditional religious institution but also to promote the dissemination of Buddhist teachings. As a result, Lam Dong Pagoda became a renowned scenic and religious site, regarded as one of the most prominent in Thuy Nguyen district at that time. The individual who made the most significant contribution to this restoration was Venerable Thong Thanh.

Architecture and Landscape

The complex begins with the Tam Quan gate combined with a bell tower. The Tam Quan of Lam Pagoda strongly reflects traditional Vietnamese architectural layout and is one of the few early 20th-century structures in Hai Phong that has remained relatively free from foreign influence. The structure is built in the “Chong Diem Doc Cac” style, decorated with bodhi-leaf motifs and crane-shaped border patterns. Hanging in the middle of the second level is a large bronze bell cast in the eighth year of the Khai Dinh reign (1923). Each time the bell resounds, it is believed to awaken people from delusion and guide them toward enlightenment, calling those lost in ignorance back to the Right Path.

Beyond the Tam Quan is a spacious, square courtyard paved with old Bat Trang bricks. The courtyard is arranged with and displays antique artifacts associated with the pagoda’s history, including two tall stone pillars inscribed with place names and the territorial boundaries of the Sung Nguyen domain.

At the center of the courtyard stands the Cuu Pham Lien Hoa tower, rising like a “Kinh Thien” brush reaching up into the blue sky. This is considered the most representative architectural work of Lam Pagoda. Construction began in 1939 and was completed in 1942. The tower base is built of blue stone, faced with hexagonal stone slabs, each side measuring 1.2 m in length and 1.58 m in height. Surrounding the base is a brick platform with a hollow interior forming arched vaults, and six arched openings on the exterior. In the past, the interior of the base served as a space where monks circumambulated the tower during Buddhist ceremonies. Above rise nine tiers, gradually diminishing in size upward, each tier hexagonal in form, appearing as if carved from a single stone block. Each level is separated by a curved stone roof shaped like a lotus basin. The summit is fashioned as a nectar vase set upon a lotus pedestal. The exterior of each tier is similarly decorated: each rectangular face within the hexagonal structure is bordered by raised moldings and carved in relief with motifs such as “chrysanthemum leaves transforming into dragons,” lotus flowers, stylized seal patterns with ho phu masks, book chests tied with silk ribbons, and more. At the center of each face is a bas-relief carving of a meditating Buddha seated on a lotus throne, rendered with meticulous detail from the spiral curls of the hair and fingers to the folds of the robe and the dignified bearing of the Buddhist figure.

The Upper Hall (Thuong Dien) has a relatively outstanding architectural scale compared to other pagodas in the region. Its layout follows the “Cong” (工) plan, consisting of five bays of the Front Hall, three bays of the ancient sanctuary, and two lateral wings extending on both sides. The roof ridge is expanded and steeply sloped. Surrounding the two roof tiers are staggered rows of small balustrade-like openings, which allow light from above to enter and ensure ventilation for the interior.

The system of Buddhist statues in the pagoda mainly dates to the 19th century, with notable examples including statues of The Ton, Quan Am Toa Son, Quan Am Tong Tu, Dai The Chi, Quan Am Bodhisattva, the Three Buddhas of the Past, Present, and Future, A Di Da, Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Quan Am, and Thanh Tang. Particularly noteworthy is the preservation of two stone steles titled Sung Nguyen Tu Bi dated 1814 and 1851, which further affirm the heritage value of the monument.

Festival

The Thuong Nguyen Festival of Lam Pagoda is held annually on the seventeenth day of the first lunar month and is one of the most important traditional festivals of the locality. The festival embodies strong Buddhist religious values and vividly reflects the spiritual life of the Thuy Nguyen community. The ritual section is conducted solemnly according to traditional rites, including incense offerings, sutra chanting, and prayers for national peace, favorable weather, abundant harvests, and a prosperous, happy life for the people.

Alongside the religious rituals, the festive section is lively, featuring a variety of cultural, artistic, and sports activities that create a joyful and vibrant atmosphere during the early days of the Lunar New Year. Particularly prominent are traditional cheo performances held directly in the pagoda courtyard, attracting large numbers of local residents and visitors. In addition, the festival includes many folk games and community exchange activities, contributing to the preservation and promotion of national cultural values.

Through its organization, the Thuong Nguyen Festival of Lam Pagoda not only meets the legitimate religious and spiritual needs of the people but also serves as a representative space for cultural and spiritual life across the entire district. The festival helps strengthen community solidarity, educates younger generations in the tradition of gratitude toward ancestors, and provides favorable conditions for preserving and promoting traditional folk arts. With this significance, the Thuong Nguyen Festival of Lam Pagoda is regarded as one of the most exemplary festivals of Thuy Nguyen district, attracting large numbers of pilgrims and visitors each year to participate, pay homage, and enjoy the festive atmosphere of early spring.

Chua Lam Dong (Hai Phong)
