Chùa Phúc An (Tân Chi, Bắc Ninh)

Thông tin cơ bản

Tên gọi và vị trí địa lý

Chùa Phúc An tọa lạc trên một gò đất cao thuộc thôn An Động, xã Tân Chi, tỉnh Bắc Ninh (trước đây thuộc xã Lạc Vệ).

Phuc An Pagoda (Xa Tan Chi, Bac Ninh Province)

Geographical Location and Name

Phuc An Pagoda is located on a high mound in An Dong hamlet, Tan Chi commune, Tien Du district, Bac Ninh province (formerly part of Lac Ve commune). The land of An Dong has long been known as an ancient village with a deep historical background. According to folk sources, the village was formerly called Yen Trien Khu, though in everyday speech local residents commonly referred to it as Quan Dong. Within this long-established cultural landscape, Phuc An Pagoda was founded by local inhabitants at an early time and gradually became an important religious center for the community.

The pagoda is associated with several sacred legends preserved in local folklore. It is said that during a turbulent period in history, this place once served as a refuge for a king in danger. After escaping the crisis and returning to the royal court, the king bestowed the name An Dong upon the village, expressing the wish for lasting peace and stability for the land. Although this story carries legendary elements, it has contributed to the sacred character and special status of Phuc An Pagoda in the collective memory of local residents.

From the center of Ha Noi, the distance to Phuc An Pagoda is about 40 km and takes a little more than an hour of travel. Starting from the Ho Hoan Kiem area, visitors can follow Le Thai To – Hang Khay streets, then continue toward Nguyen Van Cu and Ngo Gia Tu, crossing the Duong dyke to reach the highway. From there, one may travel along the Ha Noi – Bac Giang Expressway, then turn onto National Highway 38 toward the former Lac Ve area. Upon approaching Tan Chi commune, a short village road leads directly to Phuc An Pagoda, the ancient temple quietly situated on a high mound amid the countryside of Bac Ninh.

Thanks to its convenient location and long historical tradition, Phuc An Pagoda is not only a place of religious practice for local residents but also a familiar spiritual destination for pilgrims and visitors traveling to the cultural region of Kinh Bac.

Formation History and Worship

Phuc An Pagoda bears historical traces spanning several centuries and has been closely connected with the formation and development of An Dong village. Over time and through many historical changes, the pagoda was repeatedly damaged and later restored by local residents and Buddhist followers. Important milestones in its history can be summarized as follows:

  • In 1599, during the Later Le dynasty, the inhabitants of An Dong village built the pagoda on a high piece of land within the hamlet to serve as a place for Buddhist worship and community religious activities. From that time onward, Phuc An Pagoda gradually became the spiritual center of the local population.
  • In 1951, during the wartime period and due to the destructive effects of time, most of the pagoda’s structures were severely damaged. Nearly the entire architectural complex collapsed, leaving only the five-compartment To hall as the remaining trace of the ancient pagoda.
  • In 1993, when the country entered a period of stability and development, local residents together with Buddhist devotees from many places contributed labor and resources to rebuild the pagoda on its original foundation. From that point, Phuc An Pagoda gradually recovered and resumed its role as a religious center for the community.
  • In 2010, Venerable Thich Quang An came to reside at the pagoda, guiding Buddhist followers in religious practice, organizing Buddhist activities, and gradually developing the local religious life.
  • In 2013, the Bac Ninh Provincial Executive Board of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha officially appointed Venerable Thich Quang An as the abbot of Phuc An Pagoda, marking a new stage in the stabilization of the pagoda’s organization and the continuation of Buddhist activities there.

These milestones demonstrate that Phuc An Pagoda is not merely a religious structure but also a historical witness reflecting the development of An Dong village and the religious life of the inhabitants of the Kinh Bac region over many centuries.

Architectural Landscape

Phuc An Pagoda is one of the representative pagodas of Bac Ninh province, bearing the typical architectural features of traditional pagodas in the Kinh Bac cultural region. The architectural complex is fairly well organized, including structures such as the Tam Bao hall, To hall, Mau shrine, monks’ residence, guest house, bell tower, stupa garden, and other auxiliary buildings. These structures are arranged harmoniously within a spacious compound, creating an environment that is both ancient and solemn. Surrounding the pagoda is a system of trees and open garden space, contributing to a tranquil atmosphere appropriate for a Buddhist monastic setting.

At the center of the complex stands the Tam Bao hall, constructed in the Dinh-shaped layout, a common arrangement in traditional Vietnamese pagoda architecture. The front hall consists of five compartments and two side chambers, serving as the space for Buddhist ceremonies and for receiving pilgrims and visitors. Behind it is the three-compartment upper sanctuary, where the principal Buddha altars are placed. The roof is covered with tiles, with curved roof corners that create the graceful lines characteristic of traditional architecture. The interior wooden framework is intricately carved with motifs of the four sacred creatures: dragon, kylin, turtle, and phoenix, demonstrating the refined craftsmanship of traditional artisans.

In addition to its ancient architecture, Phuc An Pagoda is also known for its ancient bronze bell, which is associated with a well-known folk verse in the Kinh Bac region:

“Chuong Quan Dong, trong Han Da, tu va Han Quang.”

This verse refers to the bell of Phuc An Pagoda—locally known by its vernacular name Quan Dong Pagoda—and recalls familiar sounds of traditional village life in the past. The resonant sound of the pagoda bell echoing through the tranquil surroundings has long become part of the cultural memory of local residents, contributing to the distinctive identity of this ancient temple in An Dong village, Tien Du district.

Recognition Status

In 2011, Phuc An Pagoda was officially recognized by the People’s Committee of Bac Ninh province as a Historical and Cultural Relic, acknowledging the historical, cultural, and religious significance of the pagoda for the Kinh Bac region.
