Name and Geographical Location

Phúc Hậu Pagoda, whose formal Sino-Vietnamese name is Phúc Thắng Tự (福勝寺), is located in Phúc Hậu Hamlet, Đông Anh Commune. This is a place-name with a long history of formation.

With its rich historical depth associated with the formation and development of the local residential community, Phúc Hậu Pagoda, or Phúc Thắng Tự, is not only an important religious and spiritual establishment, but also a relic that reflects the long-standing cultural history of the Đông Anh area.

History and Associated Figures

According to local sources, the land of Phúc Hậu was formed very early. In the beginning, it was an ancient settlement, known in the first centuries CE as Kẻ Dộc. By the Lý dynasty, this place-name had become Hậu Trại, and that name was maintained for many centuries. It was not until the end of the nineteenth century that the village was officially renamed Phúc Hậu, the name still used today.

The exact date when Phúc Hậu Pagoda was first founded has not yet been determined. However, based on the earliest dated artifact still preserved at the relic site, namely a stone incense pillar engraved with the inscription Hoàng trang bi ký, created in the 17th year of the Chính Hòa reign, 1696, under the Lê Trung Hưng period, it can be affirmed that the pagoda already existed before that time. This shows that Phúc Thắng Tự is an ancient pagoda with a long history of formation and development, closely linked to the settlement process of the local community.

Throughout its history, Phúc Hậu Pagoda, or Phúc Thắng Tự, has always served as a center of religious, cultural, and spiritual activities for the people of the surrounding area. However, during the resistance war against the French colonialists, the pagoda was destroyed and severely damaged. In order to maintain worship, local residents moved the Buddha statues and the remaining ritual objects into a house located on the right-hand side of the old pagoda grounds, where worship continued.

After peace was restored in the country, out of the desire to preserve traditional cultural heritage and restore the village’s religious space, the people of Phúc Hậu contributed labor and resources on several occasions to rebuild the pagoda. In the years 1995–1997 and in 2001, the pagoda was reconstructed on the old relic foundation, at a site lying slightly to the northeast of the village communal house. This reconstruction process not only helped preserve a religious structure of historical and cultural value, but also demonstrated the enduring continuation of Buddhist religious tradition in the communal life of Phúc Hậu residents over many generations.

Architectural Landscape

Phúc Hậu Pagoda is a Buddhist architectural complex bearing the distinctive features of a village pagoda in the Northern Delta, organized according to the principle of harmony between architecture and the natural landscape. Its structures are arranged on a relatively complete ground plan, forming a solemn religious space while also meeting the religious needs of the local community.

The opening element of the pagoda space is the Three-Entrance Gate, built in the style of a pavilion tower with two architectural levels. The lower level is designed in the form of a four-pillar, three-gate structure, opening three passageways that lead into the inner precinct and create a transitional space from the outside into the worship area. The upper level is enclosed by solid walls and has a two-tiered stacked roof with gently curved upturned roof corners. This both gives the structure an elegant appearance and provides a place for hanging the pagoda’s great bell. This architectural form not only carries the symbolic meaning of a Buddhist gate, but also creates a visual focal point for the entire relic landscape.

Beyond the Three-Entrance Gate is a broad courtyard paved with traditional bricks and surrounded by verdant perennial trees, creating a quiet and airy space. On the right side of the pagoda courtyard is the area where ancient stone relics are preserved, including stone steles and a stone incense pillar dating from the Later Lê period. These are important material sources reflecting the history of the formation and development of the relic. On the left side is the tảo mạc house, an auxiliary structure serving ritual activities on new-moon days, full-moon days, and festive occasions of the pagoda. Near the Three-Entrance Gate, slightly to the left, is the Avalokiteśvara Pavilion, which helps complete the religious space and creates balance within the overall layout.

At the center of the complex is the Main Pagoda, built on a ground plan in the shape of the Chinese character “Đinh” (丁), a common type in traditional Vietnamese pagoda architecture. The structure consists of two main components: the Front Hall and the Upper Sanctuary, connected along the sacred axial line.

The Front Hall consists of five bays and two side compartments, with a gable-ended structure and closed side walls. The two gable ends are built with pillar-like elements that create a firm and stable appearance for the building. The roof is covered with traditional tiles; the roof ridge is decorated with lemon-flower motifs combined with two ridge-end ornaments, reflecting familiar decorative patterns in Northern Vietnamese folk architecture. The three central bays are fitted with wooden panel doors, while the two side bays have gable walls and windows in the shape of the character “Thọ” — longevity — both ensuring practical function and conveying auspicious meaning. The two gable ends are decorated with relief figures of warriors, creating an artistic accent on the building façade. The architectural decoration is relatively simple, mainly using motifs of flowers and foliage, cloud patterns, and stylized wave dots, in keeping with the aesthetic characteristics of traditional village pagodas.

The interior space of the Front Hall is where statues and altars with a Dharma-protecting function are arranged, including the statues of Khuyến Thiện and Trừng Ác, Đức Ông, Thánh Tăng, and the Eight Vajra Guardians. This system of worship statues both serves the function of protecting the Buddhist Dharma and contributes to completing the religious meaning of the overall architectural complex.

Connected to the central bay of the Front Hall is the Upper Sanctuary, consisting of three bays and one side compartment, arranged lengthwise to form a complete “Đinh”-shaped ground plan. Unlike the Front Hall, the architectural decoration in the Upper Sanctuary is more restrained, mainly using stylized floral motifs in order to emphasize the solemnity of the central worship space. Inside the Upper Sanctuary is a stepped altar system, on which layers of Buddha statues are arranged according to the traditional order of Northern Mahāyāna Buddhism. These include the Buddhas of the Three Times, the Amitābha Triad, the Tuyết Sơn statue, South Sea Avalokiteśvara, the Jade Emperor, and the Nine Dragons statue together with four attendants. Along the two side corridors of the Upper Sanctuary are also placed statues of the Ten Kings of Hell, the Four Bodhisattvas, the Earth Deity, Seated-Mountain Avalokiteśvara, Child-Giving Avalokiteśvara, and many other worship statues. Together, they create a rich religious space, reflecting the integration of Buddhism, folk beliefs, and Vietnamese concepts of the spiritual world.

Overall, although the architecture of Phúc Hậu Pagoda underwent reconstruction in the late twentieth century, it still quite clearly inherits the characteristics of Northern Vietnamese village pagoda architecture. The harmonious combination of ground-plan layout, worship-statue system, green landscape, and historical relics has created a cultural and religious space of architectural, artistic, and historical value.

Artifacts

Although it has undergone many historical upheavals and destruction during wartime, Phúc Hậu Pagoda still preserves several artifacts of notable historical, cultural, and artistic value. Among them, the most prominent is the system of freestanding statues created around the nineteenth century, reflecting the traditional Buddhist sculptural style of the Northern Delta.

In addition, the pagoda currently preserves nine stone steles of Hậu Phật bi ký, recording donations of money, land, and merit by patrons who entrusted posthumous worship to the pagoda. The content of these inscriptions mainly reflects religious activities, the custom of arranging posthumous anniversary worship, and the social life of the local community through different periods. Among these steles are some erected during the Gia Long and Tự Đức reigns, making them valuable sources for the study of village history and local Buddhism.

In particular, the pagoda also preserves an ancient stone incense pillar engraved with an inscription titled Hoàng trang bi ký, dated to the 17th year of the Chính Hòa reign, 1696, under the Later Lê period. This is the earliest dated artifact still existing at the relic site and is also an important basis showing that Phúc Hậu Pagoda had already been formed before that time. The stone incense pillar was skillfully crafted with refined decorative patterns, demonstrating the level of stone-carving technique and the distinctive artistic value of visual art in the Later Lê period. The remaining artifacts at the pagoda not only help clarify the history of the formation and development of the relic, but also serve as valuable material sources for the study of local culture, beliefs, and traditional art.

Events and Festivals

As a Buddhist establishment long associated with the local residential community, Phúc Hậu Pagoda is not only a place of regular religious practice, but also a space where many cultural and religious activities of the people in the area take place. On new-moon and full-moon days, during Vesak, Vu Lan, and the early days of the Lunar New Year, local residents and Buddhist devotees often come to the pagoda to offer incense, worship the Buddha, pray for peace, and take part in traditional Buddhist rituals.

Alongside daily religious activities, the pagoda is also a venue for ceremonies praying for peace, rituals for the deceased, sutra chanting, and community activities connected with the spiritual life of local residents. These activities contribute to maintaining and promoting traditional cultural values, while also strengthening community cohesion in village life.

At present, the rituals and religious activities at the pagoda are still maintained regularly, meeting the spiritual needs of the people and contributing to the preservation and promotion of the relic’s value in contemporary cultural life.

Heritage Designation

The Phúc Hậu communal house and pagoda relic complex was classified as a National Historical, Architectural, and Artistic Relic under Decision No. 226/QĐ/BT/1994 dated 5 February 1994.
