Name and Geographical Location

Yen Nhan Pagoda, whose formal name is Hanh Thong Tu, is located in Yen Nhan village, Hoa Phu commune, Hanoi city (formerly belonging to Hoa Chinh commune, Chuong My district).

The pagoda is considered one of the ancient and representative Buddhist relics of the Chuong My region, bearing profound historical and cultural significance.

History and Figures

Based on archaeological remains preserved at the site—such as five lotus-shaped stone bases from the Tran dynasty and a system of ancient sculptures—it can be inferred that the pagoda was founded during the Tran dynasty.

Throughout history, the pagoda has undergone several renovations, particularly in the 4th year of Khai Dinh (1919) and the 6th year of Khai Dinh (1921). Despite these restorations, many traditional architectural features have been preserved, reflecting the enduring cultural and historical values of the site.

Architecture and Landscape

The architectural complex of Yen Nhan Pagoda includes: the Entrance Gate, the Main Sanctuary (Tam Bao), the Ancestors’ House (Nha To), and other auxiliary structures.

The Front Hall (Tien Duong) follows the traditional design, consisting of 3 compartments and 2 side wings, with gable walls of the “bit doc” type and tiled roofs of ancient “ri” tiles. The central frame is built in the “thuong gia chieng” style with superimposed beams and lower resting struts, with relatively simple carvings yet retaining its antique character. The side frames adopt the “gia chieng” structure with superimposed beams, lower struts, and “quá giang” elements, reflecting the typical folk architecture of Northern Vietnam. This style is simple and unembellished, yet solidly constructed.

The Rear Sanctuary (Hau Cung) consists of four longitudinal compartments, directly connected to the central chamber of the Front Hall, forming a unified structure in the traditional “Dinh” (丁) architectural plan. The interior of the Upper Hall is designed with three vaulted arches and a flat ceiling. Inside, elevated brick platforms extend from the entrance inward, serving as bases for the arrangement of worship statues.

Behind the Main Sanctuary stands the Ancestors’ House (Nha To), consisting of five compartments with “bit doc” gable walls. The supporting roof frame follows the “gia chieng” style with beams and “quá giang” elements. The structure is simple, with minimal ornamentation.

Relics

Yen Nhan Pagoda preserves a valuable collection of historical and artistic artifacts, including:

  • 27 wooden statues dating from the 17th century,

  • 1 horizontal inscribed board (hoanh phi),

  • 1 bronze bell named Hanh Thong Tu chung, cast in the 7th year of Tu Duc (1854),

  • 5 lotus-shaped stone bases dating from the Tran dynasty (13th–14th centuries).

In addition, the pagoda still preserves various traditional worship objects such as incense burners, wooden altars, and offering trays, illustrating the rich religious life and distinctive cultural features of Vietnamese Buddhism.

Recognition

Yen Nhan Pagoda was recognized as a National-level Architectural and Artistic Monument on December 28, 2002, affirming its historical, cultural, and architectural significance.

Reliques

  • 27 statues en bois datant du XVIIe siècle,

  • 1 panneau horizontal (hoanh phi),
