Mái đền lợp ngói mũi hài, được trang trí đầu đao uốn cong hình rồng, giữa bờ nóc gắn lưỡng long chầu nhật, góc mái gắn lân.

Name and Geographical Location

Thinh Thon Temple is located in the southern area of Thinh Thon Village, Cam Thuong Commune, Ba Vi District (now under Quang Oai Commune, Hanoi City).
The area borders Duong Lam Commune (Son Tay Town) to the east, Tien Phong and Thuy An Communes (Ba Vi District) to the west, Xuan Son Commune (Son Tay Town) to the south, and Dong Quang Commune (Ba Vi District) to the north.

According to local legend, this place was once a river estuary — a site with not only advantageous geomantic (feng shui) features but also profound historical significance, closely associated with the daily life and cultural identity of the local inhabitants.

History and Historical Figures

Thinh Thon Temple is dedicated to National Mother Empress Man, whose real name was Tran Thi Doan, also known as Lady Man Thien, the mother of the two national heroines Trung Trac and Trung Nhi.

According to folk legends and a sacred genealogy (thần phả) compiled in the first year of the Hong Phuc reign (1572), she was a native of Nam Nguyen Village (present-day Nam An Hamlet, Cam Thuong Commune, Ba Vi District, Hanoi City), and was a descendant of the Hung Kings’ maternal lineage.

Her husband was a Lac general of Me Linh District. After his early death, she remained a widow, raising her two daughters, teaching them sericulture, silk weaving, and martial arts, while nurturing their patriotic spirit and willpower.

During the uprising against the Eastern Han dynasty’s domination, Lady Man Thien not only served as a vital supporter behind the frontlines but also gathered forces, organized and coordinated resistance, and even directly commanded several battles. Her strategic wisdom and indomitable courage made her a symbol of loyal womanhood, and she was posthumously honored as Empress Man (Man Hoang Hau).

Though the rebellion was eventually suppressed, she and the Trung Sisters left one of the earliest and most glorious chapters in Vietnam’s struggle for independence.

According to local lore, after falling in battle against Ma Yuan, her body drifted down the river and came ashore near Thinh Thon Village. The villagers retrieved her remains, buried her at Ma Da Field, and built a temple to commemorate her great contributions. Since then, Thinh Thon Temple has become a significant spiritual landmark  not only marking the memory of a historical figure but also expressing the deep gratitude and reverence of the people toward a woman who contributed profoundly to the nation’s founding history.

Over centuries, the temple complex deteriorated due to historical and environmental factors, affecting its cultural, religious, and aesthetic value. In response, Ba Vi District authorities directed relevant agencies and the People’s Committee of Cam Thuong Commune to conduct surveys, prepare documentation, and implement a restoration project for the Thinh Thon Temple Historical and Cultural Site.

The project, approved and executed in three major phases, had a total investment of over 30 billion VND.

  • Phase 1 (2019): focused on reinforcing the foundation and restoring the temple’s main structure.

  • Phases 2 and 3 (2022): included auxiliary buildings, technical infrastructure, and landscaping.

The restoration has now been completed, giving the temple a more spacious and dignified appearance while preserving and promoting its historical and spiritual value — a sacred site of great importance in the cultural and religious life of the local community.

Architecture and Landscape

Throughout its long and eventful history, Thinh Thon Temple has undergone several architectural changes. It is built on a flat site, facing the village’s vast rice fields, with the Red River flowing gently behind.

Gate Area

The temple lies along a main local road, with its courtyard elevated above street level to create a commanding and solemn view of the entire architectural complex. From the roadside, a small bridge crosses a narrow stream leading to the temple’s spacious front courtyard.

On the left-hand side of the courtyard (from the entrance perspective) stands a two-story circular pavilion, supported by round wooden columns. The structure has open sides with no enclosing walls, allowing ventilation and enhancing the overall aesthetic harmony of the site.

Next stands a smaller gate marked by two decorative pillars (trụ biểu), leading into a second inner courtyard.
At the central axis of the temple’s spiritual layout (trục thần đạo), there is an octagonal two-tiered pavilion, supported by four large wooden columns. Following this axis leads to the Nghi Môn the main gate opening into the temple’s inner sanctum, the sacred space dedicated to National Mother Man Thien.

The Nghi Môn consists of four tall stone pillars. The two central pillars form the main entrance, approximately two meters wide, designed in an open style with no roof or doors. Phoenix figures crown the pillar tops.

Connecting the central and side pillars is a low wall, on which are sculpted symmetrical reliefs of two elephants in a kneeling posture, symbolizing reverence.
Two smaller side gates, each about two meters tall, are covered with two-tiered traditional tiled roofs, showcasing the regional architectural style.
An enclosing wall extends from this gate system around the temple grounds, creating a coherent, enclosed, and reverent sacred compound.

Left and Right Wings (Tả Vu / Hữu Vu)

Beyond the Nghi Môn lies a wide brick-paved courtyard. On both sides stand two symmetrical auxiliary halls, each with three compartments (gian), traditional tiled roofs, and wooden panel doors (bức bàn).
These halls serve as supporting spaces for temple rituals and community activities.

Main Temple

The main temple complex consists of two parallel structures built on the same elevated platform.
The first building is the Đại Bái Hall, followed by the Tiền Đường and Hậu Cung, arranged in the traditional “Đinh” (丁) layout.

The Đại Bái Hall, comprising three compartments, follows the “kèo – kẻ – giá chiêng” wooden beam system typical of Northern Vietnamese architecture.
On its wooden columns and beams are engraved couplets in Han script, including an inscription marking the 25th year of the Tu Duc reign (1872).
The decorative patterns are simple yet elegant — bamboo-joint carvings on brackets, and stylized leaves adorning rafters and beams. The hall is enclosed only on its sides, with an open rear wall that allows airflow into the inner temple.

Behind a narrow courtyard lies the Tiền Đường Hall, also with three compartments, distinguished by its four sharply curved roof corners. The ridge and podium are decorated with lively carvings of kylins, guardian lions, and serpents.
From its central chamber, one enters the Hậu Cung, the main sanctuary connected in the “chuôi vồ” (mallet-handle) style. Above the entrance to the Hậu Cung, large gilded characters spell “Tối Linh Từ” — “The Most Sacred Temple.”
Beneath the plaque, two wooden panels feature phoenixes facing inward, symbolizing holiness and reverence.

Inside, the Hậu Cung houses lacquered and gilded thrones (long ngai), ancestral tablets, and statues displayed within glass enclosures. The altar area is richly adorned with gilded cửa võng (hanging altarpieces), horizontal plaques, and parallel sentences, all bearing deep artistic and spiritual significance.

The temple’s roof is covered with mũi hài-shaped tiles, its ridge decorated with dragons flanking the sun (lưỡng long chầu nhật), and its roof corners with kylin figures.

Artifacts

Thinh Thon Temple preserves numerous valuable relics, including royal thrones, altarpieces, horizontal plaques, inscribed couplets, and seven royal decrees (sắc phong) issued by feudal dynasties.
Among these is a decree from the 2nd year of the Đồng Khánh reign (1886), as well as an original Han-script genealogy detailing the life and contributions of National Mother Man Thien.

These relics not only reflect the temple’s long-standing religious and historical significance but also serve as vital material evidence for research in Vietnamese culture, art, religion, and feudal institutions.

Festivals and Cultural Activities

The Thinh Thon Temple Festival is a traditional folk celebration held annually on the 15th day of the first lunar month in Thinh Thon Village, Cam Thuong Commune.
It commemorates and honors the merits of National Mother Man Thien, the mother of the Trung Sisters, for her great contributions to the national uprising against foreign domination.

The festival is organized under the leadership of the Cam Thuong Commune People’s Committee, with active participation from local residents and visitors.

The event includes two main parts:

  • The ceremonial section, featuring solemn rituals conducted by village elders and clan representatives to express reverence toward the temple deity.

  • The festive section, full of joyful traditional games such as tug of war, pole pushing, call-and-response singing (hát ví), drum singing (hát trống quân), and palanquin processions, fostering community spirit and preserving the region’s rich intangible cultural heritage.

Recognition

For its outstanding historical, architectural, and spiritual value, Thinh Thon Temple was officially recognized and classified as a National Architectural and Artistic Relic by the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) in 1992.

(Thịnh Thôn Temple)

(Tả Vu / Hữu Vu)

  • 祭祀仪式庄严肃穆,由乡老及族人主持;
