Cau Ca Communal House (Dong Anh, Hanoi)
Name and Geographical Location
Cau Ca Communal House is located in Cau Ca Hamlet, Co Loa Commune, Dong Anh District (now part of Dong Anh Commune, Hanoi City). In the past, the hamlet was called Cau Ky. According to legend, this area was once one of the eight outer garrisons protecting Co Loa Citadel, guarded by General Ly Tam Vien.
According to local tradition, the name “Cau Ca” originated from the fact that the hamlet lies along the Hoang River, near an ancient bridge called Cau Thang Nam (“Bridge of the Fifth Month,” also known as Ngu Nguyet Kieu). Another legend claims that this was where King Thuc An Duong Vuong often stopped his royal boat to bathe or to visit his wife’s homeland, hence the people called it “Cau Ca.”
Co Loa Commune borders Viet Hung and Duc Tu communes to the east, Vinh Ngoc and Xuan Canh communes to the west, Mai Lam and Dong Hoi communes to the south, and Uy No Commune (same district) to the north.
The communal house is situated at the center of the hamlet, on an ancient plot of land covering about 650 square meters. It is dedicated to the tutelary deity—King An Duong Vuong, the founder of the ancient state of Au Lac and the legendary Co Loa Citadel—reflecting the long-standing historical imprint and cultural landscape of the ancient Co Loa area.
History and Figures
The communal house is dedicated to the village’s tutelary deity—King An Duong Vuong, whose personal name was Thuc Phan. He founded the state of Au Lac in 208 BC, unifying the regions of Tay Au and Lac Viet. A brilliant military strategist, he built Co Loa Citadel and successfully resisted the invasions led by Trieu Da. King An Duong Vuong is worshipped in many places throughout Vietnam.
Architecture and Landscape
Cau Ca Communal House features a four-pillar gate (nghi mon tu tru) and a small courtyard. The overall layout follows the “double” (nhị) plan, consisting of two adjacent halls separated by about two meters.
The Great Hall (Dai Dinh) includes five compartments and two lean-tos, built with wooden frame architecture, tiled roof, and solid gable walls. The structure consists of four rows of columns supporting trusses in the “upper beam–middle beam–lower brace” system (thuong giuong, trung giuong, ha bay). The façade features wooden panel doors, while the two side chambers adjoin the gable walls.
The wooden structure includes finely carved brackets and rafters decorated with cloud motifs, floral patterns, and stylized longevity characters (shou), showcasing delicate and fluid craftsmanship. The main trusses adopt the “stacked beam” (chong ruong) system with dragon-head carvings and stylized ornamentation. All wooden elements are meticulously crafted with elaborate decorative patterns.
Adjacent to the main sanctuary stands a small shrine dedicated to Princess My Chau.
Inside the Great Hall remain several worshipped panels (cua võng) and altars decorated in the Nguyen Dynasty (19th century) style, richly gilded and lacquered with intricate carvings and graceful curves. The furnishings include long dinh (small shrines), bat cong-style wooden arches with expanded pillars and delicate floral motifs.
Currently, Cau Ca Communal House is in a state of severe deterioration. The wooden components are decayed, the roof structure has become distorted, and the courtyard level is now lower than the surrounding roads and houses, causing frequent flooding during the rainy season.
Artifacts
The communal house preserves two divine genealogies (than pha), fifteen imperial decrees of conferment (sac phong), including ten originals and five copies. The earliest decree dates from the 28th year of the Canh Hung Era (1767) under the Early Le Dynasty, and the latest from the 9th year of the Khai Dinh Era (1924) under the Nguyen Dynasty.
There are also decrees from the 5th year of the Quang Trung Era (1792) and the 2nd year of the Canh Thinh Era (1794), as well as a royal throne (ngai tho), ancestral tablets (bai vi), and a palanquin (kieu bat cong)—all dating to the 19th century and still relatively intact.
Events and Festivals
The festival of Cau Ca Communal House coincides with the Co Loa Festival held annually on the 6th day of the First Lunar Month. Cau Ca Hamlet is one of the Eight Villages of Loa Citadel (Bat Xa Loa Thanh) participating in the festivities.
The event is organized by the commune authorities under the supervision of the district. The festival honors King Thuc Phan An Duong Vuong, who established the ancient state of Au Lac.
The ritual section includes ceremonies and processions. Cau Ca Hamlet, together with other villages worshipping An Duong Vuong, organizes annual processions to Co Loa Temple, carrying palanquins and sacred offerings. In years of grand celebration, the main festival takes place on the 8th day of the First Lunar Month.
After the central ceremony, each hamlet continues its local festivities, reopening its communal house for offerings and games. Cau Ca Hamlet is divided into four wards (giap), each responsible for two ritual stations to perform worship for the tutelary deity.
The festive section features traditional tuong opera performances, human chess, and to tom diem (a traditional card game).
Classification
Cau Ca Communal House was recognized as a City-level Historical, Architectural, and Artistic Relic in 2003.
(Dinh Cau Ca – Dong Anh, Hanoi)
