Phuong My Communal House (Hai Phong)
Geographic Location and Name
Phuong My Communal House belongs to the former Phuong My village, now located in Phuong My commune/ward, An Duong district, Hai Phong City. The communal house stands at a relatively central position within the residential area, facing an open direction that is convenient for religious activities and community gatherings.
The name Phuong My Communal House is derived from the village name, expressing the aspiration for a peaceful and prosperous land, while also affirming the long-standing historical and cultural identity of the local inhabitants. Despite many historical changes, the name of the communal house has been preserved, becoming a symbol closely associated with the spiritual life of the people in the area.
History and Worshipped Figure
According to the Ngoc Pha (sacred genealogy), during the reign of King Dinh Tien Hoang, in Hai Duong Lo, Kinh Mon prefecture, Thuy Duong district, Hoa Chuong hamlet (present-day Phuong My), there lived a family of the Pham clan. The husband was named Huy and the wife Le Thi Quy. They belonged to a scholarly and prominent lineage, were virtuous and kind-hearted, yet remained childless into their thirties, which caused them great sorrow.
One day, the wife visited a mountain and saw a magnificent pagoda, where she prayed for a child. One night, she dreamed of an old man wearing a red robe, with white hair and beard, who handed her a branch of cinnamon blossoms. Shortly afterward, she became pregnant and gave birth to a son of extraordinary appearance and noble bearing, whom they named Quang. He was born on the eighteenth day of the first lunar month.
At the age of fourteen, he was sent to study. After four to five years, he had mastered both literature and martial arts, being praised as exceptionally intelligent, strong, and talented.
At the age of twenty-seven, hearing that King Dinh Tien Hoang had issued a proclamation seeking talented men throughout the realm, Pham Quang sought permission from his parents to go to the capital and sit for the selection. Impressed by his abilities and eloquence, the king appointed him Tham tri chinh su, allowing him to serve at court. After eleven years, however, the rebellion of Do Thich occurred, resulting in the assassination of Dinh Bo Linh and Dinh Lien.
In 979, King Dinh Tien Hoang was murdered, and Dinh Toan ascended the throne at only six years old. State affairs were then decided by Queen Mother Duong Van Nga and General Le Hoan, Commander of the Ten Armies. Seeing the instability in Dai Viet, the Song dynasty dispatched Hou Renbao to prepare an invasion. The situation was extremely critical. Queen Mother Duong Van Nga entrusted Le Hoan with supreme command of the army to recruit troops and prepare resistance. Pham Quang volunteered to join the army and served as a general under Le Hoan, actively participating in logistical preparations.
In the autumn of 980, the Song forces launched attacks and issued threats in an attempt to force Dai Viet into submission. Faced with the survival of the nation, Queen Mother Duong Van Nga made the crucial decision to transfer the throne to Le Hoan. Le Hoan became emperor, adopted the reign title Thien Phuc (980–988), and founded the Le dynasty (known in history as the Early Le dynasty).
In the spring of 981, Song troops advanced en masse through Lang Son, while their naval forces sailed from Guangzhou into the Bach Dang River. Le Hoan ordered his navy to block the waterways, feigning retreat to lure the enemy into a field of sharpened stakes. When the tide receded, Vietnamese forces launched a coordinated counterattack, sinking many enemy ships. The Song army suffered a disastrous defeat and withdrew.
Amid concerns among some generals about facing a stronger enemy, General Pham Quang requested to lead the vanguard of combined land and naval forces. The first decisive battle took place at Chau Moc (in present-day Lang Son), where Vietnamese forces won a major victory, gaining strategic initiative. During the Bach Dang battle of 981, Pham Quang commanded a naval unit, contributed many effective strategies, and, as a local familiar with the terrain, played a crucial role in helping Emperor Le Hoan annihilate the Song invaders in the Bach Dang River.
According to legend, Hoa Chuong (ancient Phuong My) served as the main headquarters and senior command center of the resistance, under the direct leadership of Emperor Le Dai Hanh.
After victory was secured, Pham Quang was granted high rank and generous rewards by the king, but he firmly requested permission to return to his homeland to help the villagers with agriculture. He passed away in his native village on the seventeenth day of the tenth lunar month. The king issued a royal decree and granted 300 strings of cash for Hoa Chuong to build a temple and shrine in his honor. The villagers were exempted from taxes and corvee labor for three years to maintain incense offerings throughout the year, and the shrine of Pham Quang was designated as a site for state-level rituals.
Pham Quang was posthumously conferred by the Early Le dynasty and later feudal dynasties with the title Hung thanh uy thong, chi linh dai vuong, recognized as a Supreme Tutelary Deity of Hoa Chuong village. The villagers were assigned the status of Ho nhi tao le—special custodians responsible for his worship—and were permanently exempted from certain military and tax obligations.
From generation to generation, the people of Hoa Chuong, now Phuong My in My Dong commune, have deeply remembered the merits of Pham Quang, a native son who helped both the people and the nation by defeating the Song invaders and safeguarding national independence. His virtues remain a shining example for the Vietnamese people in general and for the people of Phuong My in particular.
Architecture and Landscape
Originally, Phuong My Communal House was built on a high mound to the west of Hoa Chuong village, an area locally known as “Chua Hill.” At first, it was only a small and simple shrine. In 1863, as religious and communal needs increased, villagers expanded and upgraded the shrine into a communal house, officially dedicating it to the village tutelary deity Pham Quang.
Phuong My Communal House was once a large and renowned architectural complex in Thuy Nguyen district. It followed a tien mon hau dinh layout, with the main structure arranged in the shape of the character Dinh. Specifically, it consisted of seven bays in the front hall and four bays in the rear sanctuary, flanked by two giai vu wings totaling eighteen bays. This formed a complete, grand, and well-balanced architectural ensemble, serving both as a place of worship and as the cultural and religious center of the village.
During the resistance against French colonial forces, in 1954, French troops occupied the communal house. Local guerrillas detonated explosives to attack the enemy, causing severe damage, especially to the rear sanctuary. In 1959, the village was still able to hold one final festival at the main communal house. However, due to prolonged war damage, the structure deteriorated rapidly and was completely dismantled in early 1960. All valuable relics, including statues, royal decrees, and sacred genealogies of Pham Quang, were respectfully transferred to Dong Temple, now Phuong My Temple, for continued preservation and worship.
In 2014, the People’s Committee of My Dong commune, together with the local heritage management board and village council, initiated the reconstruction of Phuong My Communal House within the historical complex of Phuong My Temple. In 2017, the communal house was completed and put into use, with a total investment of 7.3 billion VND. After completion, the management board and villagers ceremonially reinstalled the Three Great Kings for worship at the new communal house, where they have been venerated ever since.
Festival
Every year, on the eighteenth day of the first lunar month, the heritage management board, village council, and local residents organize the traditional festival commemorating the birth anniversary of the village tutelary deity Pham Quang, who assisted Emperor Le Hoan in defeating the Song invaders in 981 CE.
The festival is solemnly held within the complex of Phuong My Communal House and Temple, serving as an occasion to uphold the Vietnamese tradition of gratitude and remembrance—“When drinking water, remember its source”—a cultural value passed down through generations and a defining characteristic of the people of Phuong My.
