Thien Dong Communal House (Hai Phong)
Location and Name
Thien Dong Communal House is located in Thien Dong village, Dong Son commune, Thuy Nguyen district, Hai Phong city. Dong Son is an ancient land that was formed and developed very early. Based on extant classical textual sources, it can be affirmed that Thien Dong is an ancient village with a history of existence and development spanning thousands of years, closely associated with the long historical process of the Thuy Nguyen region.
As early as the 11th century, during the Ly dynasty, the Thien Dong area already had settlers who reclaimed land, established livelihoods, and formed densely populated and prosperous hamlets. The stable and continuous presence of the community over many centuries laid a solid foundation for the development of the local economy, culture, and belief system. Going further back, during the Dong Son cultural period (approximately from 700 BCE to 100 CE), Thien Dong was one of the important residential areas of ancient Viet inhabitants.
Archaeological materials have further clarified the deep historical layers of this land. In 1973, the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology conducted excavations and discovered burial sites in the Dong Du area (Dong Son commune). Research results indicate that these remains date back about 2,500 years, confirming that Thien Dong and its surrounding areas constituted a continuous habitation space of ancient Viet people and formed an important component in the process of formation and development of ancient culture in the Red River Delta.
History and Deities
Thien Dong Communal House was originally constructed during the Nguyen dynasty (18th century). After many restorations and renovations, the most recent major repair in 2007 shaped the scale and architectural appearance seen today. The communal house is dedicated to the worship of four village tutelary deities: Hoang Uy, Hoang Thanh, Hoang Thien, and Nguyen Thi Hong. The three figures Hoang Uy, Hoang Thanh, and Hoang Thien were all conferred the title of Dai Vuong by the royal court for their merits in assisting Ly kings in campaigns against Ai Lao invaders to defend the national borders. The fourth deity, Nguyen Thi Hong, was granted the title of Princess; according to legend, she manifested spiritually and provided supernatural assistance to the Ly king in resisting foreign aggression. Today, Thien Dong Communal House still preserves several royal edicts from the Nguyen dynasty that record the merits and status of these four local tutelary deities.
According to the hagiographic text “Thien Dong xa Tu vi linh tich”, during the Ly dynasty (11th century), in the Tam Dong area (the ancient name of Thien Dong village), thuộc trang Phu Lien, Thuy Duong district, Kinh Mon prefecture, Hai Duong circuit, there lived a family of the Hoang clan. The husband, named Hoang Thuan, and his wife, Dao Thi Nhuan, were renowned for their benevolence, but despite their advanced age, they had no children. One day, while working in the fields, the wife found three green-colored eggs. Believing them to be heavenly gifts, she carefully brought them home and kept them. Three days later, the eggs hatched, and miraculously, a sacred essence entered her body, causing her to become pregnant.
At the hour of Ty on the nineteenth day of the first lunar month of the year Nham Ngo, she gave birth to a sac that opened to reveal three baby boys, all with handsome appearances and unusually green-colored limbs. Though astonished, the parents loved them dearly and named them Hoang Uy, Hoang Thanh, and Hoang Thien respectively. Upon reaching adulthood, each displayed exceptional talent: Hoang Uy excelled in strategy and military planning; Hoang Thanh was skilled in riverine affairs and versed in magical arts; Hoang Thien was outstanding in military organization and martial prowess.
When Ai Lao forces crossed the border to invade, the royal court issued a call to recruit capable men. Hearing the news, the three Hoang brothers set out to answer the summons. Upon audience, impressed by their extraordinary appearance and demonstrated abilities, the king was greatly pleased and appointed all three as Dai Tuong Quan, granting them command of troops to fight the enemy. During the campaign, they proposed the “Moc hoan” stratagem, using round logs released into the river to obstruct and destroy enemy warships. The plan proved highly effective, bringing about a major victory; however, Hoang Thanh heroically sacrificed his life in battle. Deeply mournful, the king ordered the local people to build a shrine to worship him.
After the victory, the king held a banquet to reward the troops and conferred additional titles upon Hoang Uy and Hoang Thien. When the banquet ended, the two submitted a memorial requesting permission to return to their homeland to perform ancestral rites, which was granted. While strolling, they noticed a sand mound shaped like a dragon and stopped to contemplate it. Suddenly, a violent wind arose, and both deified on the twenty-fifth day of the twelfth lunar month. When the sky cleared, villagers discovered a large tomb formed by piled-up termite earth, regarded it as a sacred sign, and reported the matter to the court. In admiration of their talents and merits, the king issued an edict allowing the people of Thien Dong village to establish a temple for worship and sanctioned perpetual incense offerings.
The hagiography also records that on one occasion, when the Ly king personally led troops to fight the enemy, he rested for the night and dreamed of a young woman with graceful features who introduced herself as Nguyen Thi Hong, from Huu Le hamlet, Thien Dong commune, Tra Huong district. She said that she had drowned in the river on the tenth day of the tenth lunar month; her soul drifted to this area and was assigned by the heavenly court to guard it. Seeing that the king was personally leading the campaign to suppress the enemy, she requested to provide supernatural assistance. Upon awakening, the king realized that a deity had appeared in his dream and immediately set up an altar to offer thanks. He then divided his forces into multiple naval and land divisions to attack simultaneously. At the height of the fierce battle, a violent storm suddenly arose; torrential rain and strong winds capsized all enemy warships, enabling the royal forces to decisively defeat the invaders.
These legends and hagiographic records not only reflect distinctive folk beliefs but also express the pride and profound gratitude of the people of Thien Dong village toward the heroes and deities who rendered meritorious service in protecting the country and safeguarding the people, thereby highlighting the historical, cultural, and spiritual significance of Thien Dong Communal House in the life of the local community.
Festival
The traditional festival of Thien Dong Communal House is held over three days, from the nineteenth to the twenty-first of the first lunar month. The ritual section includes ceremonies of announcement, incense offering, and thanksgiving rites; the festive section features various traditional folk games such as cockfighting, Chinese chess, tug of war, and notably, evening performances and exchanges of cheo singing in the communal house courtyard.
Heritage Classification
Thien Dong Communal House was recognized as a City-level Historical and Cultural Monument in 2011 under Decision No. 1326/QD-UBND dated 25 August 2011 issued by the People’s Committee of Hai Phong city.
