Name and Geographical Location
Thu Cuu Communal House is located in Thuong Hamlet, Co Loa Commune, Dong Anh District, Hanoi City.
It lies within the Special National Relic Complex of Co Loa and serves as a place of worship dedicated to King An Duong Vuong.
History and Figures
Over the course of time and due to the impacts of war, the original communal house no longer retained any trace of its early construction period.
In 1962, the ancient structure completely collapsed.
In 2008, local residents contributed funds to rebuild the communal house on its original foundation, continuing the tradition of venerating the monarch who founded the ancient state of Au Lac.
In 2023, Thu Cuu Communal House underwent a comprehensive restoration project with a total investment of over 28.8 billion VND.
The restoration included the repair of the main communal house, replacement of all wooden structures with new ironwood (lim) components, reinforcement of the foundation, reconstruction of the Left and Right Chambers (Ta Mac and Huu Mac), construction of new ceremonial gates (Nghi Mon), a Ritual Hall, Stele House, along with other auxiliary buildings, boundary walls, lighting, and garden landscaping.
On August 21, 2025, a solemn inauguration ceremony and dedication plaque unveiling were held, marking a new phase in the preservation and promotion of the site’s cultural and historical values.
Architecture and Landscape
The original communal house was roofed with tiles and of modest scale.
According to the “Hau Than Bi Ky” stele erected in the 15th year of Vinh Thinh (1719), a villager named Nguyen Van Quy and his wife Trinh Thi Nho donated one mau (approx. 3,600 m²) of farmland to repair the communal house, and were consequently honored as the Patron Spirits of the village.
In earlier times, the house faced south, comprising five compartments in the main hall (Dai Dinh) and two compartments in the rear sanctuary (Hau Cung).
After several relocations — first to the village gate, then back to its original position — the present structure now includes three compartments and two wings, with curved dragon-finial roofs.
It stands between the Middle Rampart (Thanh Trung) and the Outer Rampart (Thanh Ngoai) of the ancient Co Loa Citadel, facing southward toward the Middle Rampart, in the area once known as Thuyen Garden – Mam Pond.
The newly reconstructed communal house features an exposed wooden frame structure with tie beams, braces, and eaves posts.
Architectural decorations include dragons, the Four Sacred Beasts (Tu Linh), and the Four Seasons (Tu Quy) motifs.
Among the valuable artifacts is the Hau Than Bi Ky stele (1719), recording the contributions of donors who helped rebuild the structure.
Thu Cuu Communal House belongs to Cuu Hamlet, located in the northeastern part of Co Loa Commune, amidst rice fields to the south of the hamlet.
The complex faces southeast and includes a shared gate (with the pagoda), a Main Hall (Dai Dinh), and a Rear Sanctuary (Hau Cung).
It enshrines the Village Tutelary Deity – King An Duong Vuong (Thuc Phan).
Events and Festivals
The Thu Cuu Communal House Festival is part of the joint celebration of the Eight Villages of Co Loa Citadel (Bat Xa Loa Thanh) in ancient times, and of all the hamlets of Co Loa today.
It is held annually on the 6th day of the first lunar month, coinciding with the Co Loa Festival.
