Thuan Hoa Communal House (Lang Giang, Bac Ninh)

Name and Geographical Location

Thuan Hoa Communal House, also known as Cay Bang Communal House, is located in Tien Luc commune, Bac Ninh province, about 24 km north of Bac Giang Ward center.

History and Historical Figures

Thuan Hoa Communal House, commonly referred to by local residents as Cay Bang Communal House, is a long-standing religious structure closely associated with the life of the local community. The communal house is situated on a spacious and relatively flat area, providing a convenient location for communal activities. Adjacent to the site stands a large ancient tropical almond tree (bang tree), with a wide canopy that remains green throughout the year, offering shade and serving as a familiar landmark linked to the site’s popular name. In front of the communal house runs Road 295 connecting Voi and Tien Luc, while behind it, not far away, lies a pine hill, creating an open and tranquil environment.

According to historical records and local oral traditions, Thuan Hoa Communal House was built around the 18th century. This period marked the strong development of communal house systems in the Kinh Bac region, reflecting the religious and organizational needs of agricultural communities. Since its establishment, the communal house has served not only as a place of worship but also as a venue for important village activities such as meetings, festivals, and traditional ceremonies.

The communal house is dedicated to two tutelary deities, Cao Son and Quy Minh. According to legend, they were generals during the time of the Hung Kings, who helped defend the country and protect the people. After their deaths, they were deified and worshiped by the local population. The veneration of Cao Son and Quy Minh reflects the continuation of widespread folk beliefs in northern Vietnam, as well as the moral principle of honoring those who contributed to the community.

Overall, Thuan Hoa Communal House is not only a site of historical value but also a place preserving traditional cultural and religious elements. Its existence, along with the associated legends, contributes to a deeper understanding of the spiritual life and historical development of the local community.

Architecture and Landscape

Thuan Hoa Communal House still retains a relatively complete architectural layout, consisting of the main hall (dai dinh) and the rear sanctuary (hau cung), connected in a “Dinh” (丁)-shaped plan. The main hall comprises five compartments with two side wings, serving as the primary space for communal activities such as meetings and rituals. Behind it is the three-compartment rear sanctuary, where the main altar is placed, forming a more sacred and enclosed space. The connection between these two components creates a unified architectural complex that is both functional and solemn.

The entire structure is built of ironwood (lim), a traditional material known for its durability and strength, commonly used in important architectural works. The wooden framework, including columns, beams, and trusses, is firmly joined, demonstrating the solid construction techniques of past craftsmen.

The outstanding value of Thuan Hoa Communal House lies in its decorative carving art. Notable motifs include “dragon nest” and “five dragons,” with images of a mother dragon surrounded by smaller dragons. These figures are vividly rendered, with softly curving bodies that create a sense of continuous movement. The “mother dragon – child dragons” composition symbolizes growth, continuity, and connection.

In addition, other mythical animals such as kylins, dragons, and horses appear in various expressive poses, enriching the decorative system. These carvings are mainly concentrated on structural beams, where artisans demonstrated their craftsmanship and aesthetic thinking. Dragon imagery appears frequently, combined with cloud and flame motifs, forming compositions that are intricate yet harmonious, characteristic of the artistic style of the Later Le Restoration period (18th century).

In general, the architecture of Thuan Hoa Communal House represents a combination of solid traditional structure and refined carving art. The surviving decorative elements not only possess aesthetic value but also clearly reflect the artistic style and craftsmanship of the period in which the structure was built.

Artifacts
At present, Thuan Hoa Communal House preserves a relatively rich collection of artifacts and antiques of value for the study of history, culture, and traditional art. These include Han-Nom documents such as royal decrees, horizontal lacquered boards, parallel sentences, and ritual texts. These materials reflect the process by which feudal courts recognized and conferred titles upon the deities worshiped at the communal house, as well as the cultural and spiritual life of the community over time. The lacquered boards and parallel sentences, written in Chinese characters with formal calligraphy, praise the merits of the deities and contribute to the solemn ritual space.

In addition, the communal house preserves many objects made from precious wood, such as the ceremonial palanquin (kieu bat cong), offering trays, and altar stands, mainly dating from the 19th century. These items were used in processions and rituals and demonstrate the craftsmanship of traditional artisans. The palanquin, with its solid structure and intricate carvings, is used during deity processions, while the offering trays and altar stands play essential roles in completing the worship space.

Festival
Each year, Thuan Hoa Communal House organizes three main festivals on the following lunar dates: the 9th day of the first month, the 20th day of the third month, and the 20th day of the eighth month. Among these, the festivals in the first and third months are larger in scale, attracting many local residents and visitors. Each festival consists of two main parts: the ceremonial rituals and the festive activities.

Ceremonial Section

The ritual part is conducted solemnly according to traditional village customs. Preparations begin before the main festival day, with offerings such as incense, flowers, sticky rice, wine, and other ritual items. On the festival day, incense offering is performed first, followed by the main sacrificial ceremony led by village elders and respected community members.

The rituals follow a structured sequence, including processions, offerings, and the reading of ceremonial texts. These texts typically praise the merits of the tutelary deities Cao Son and Quy Minh and express wishes for health, peace, and good harvests. The ceremonial atmosphere reflects the community’s reverence and commitment to preserving tradition.

During major festivals, such as those in the first and third lunar months, additional activities like palanquin processions may be organized. These processions pass through the main village roads, creating a solemn and unifying atmosphere.

Festive Section

Following the rituals, the festive section includes various traditional games and entertainment activities, creating a lively atmosphere. Common games include wrestling, cockfighting, and tug of war, fostering both competition and community bonding.

Folk performances such as vi singing and antiphonal singing may also be held, enriching the cultural life of the community. These simple and expressive melodies reflect the distinctive cultural identity of rural areas.

During major festival periods, the number of participants increases significantly, and the atmosphere becomes more vibrant with the presence of visitors from various places. The festival thus serves not only as a recreational occasion but also as an opportunity to preserve and promote local cultural traditions.

Classification
Thuan Hoa Communal House has been recognized as a Special National Relic Site (Decision No. 1473/QD-TTg, dated November 26, 2024).

Maison communale Thuan Hoa (Lang Giang, Bac Ninh)
