Geographic Location and Name

Tra Son Communal House is located in Kenh Giang Commune, Thuy Nguyen District, Hai Phong City. It is an important spiritual and religious monument for the local community, typical of Vietnamese village life. The communal house was built not only as a venue for village festivals, ceremonial gatherings, and folk cultural performances, but also as the most sacred space for worshipping the village Tutelary Deity (Thanh Hoang Lang)—a deity credited with great contributions to the country and the people. In addition, it traditionally served as a meeting place for local authorities. The name of the communal house derives from its location near Tra Son Mountain, a hill once covered with numerous tea plants.

History and Worshipped Deity

Tra Son Communal House is dedicated to the village Tutelary Deity bearing the divine title Dong Hai Thuong Dang Than. According to the Declaration of the Deity’s Deeds (Giay Khai Than Tich) of Tra Son Village, Duong Chinh Canton, Thuy Nguyen District, Kien An Province, compiled in 1938, Dong Hai was a human deity who rendered great merit in eradicating epidemics, especially cholera.
Local tradition recounts that from the early years of the Tu Duc reign, when a dangerous epidemic broke out in the village, the villagers sincerely prayed for divine protection and were granted miraculous intervention. As a result, the calamity was overcome and life gradually returned to stability. In recognition of these merits, the royal court conferred upon the deity the honorific title:
“Duong Canh Thanh Hoang Thien Tran Cu Si, Quyen Chuong Chu Dinh Kiem Hanh Thuy Bo, Thong Minh Uy Dung Anh Linh Dong Hai Thuong Dang Ton Than.”
Through subsequent dynasties, the deity continued to receive royal ordinations, granting the people of Tra Son permission to maintain perpetual worship.

During the two resistance wars against French colonialism and American imperialism, Tra Son Communal House was not only a religious center but also closely associated with the local revolutionary movement. According to testimonies of local authorities and residents, between 1945 and 1948 the communal house served as a base for activities of district- and city-level revolutionary cadres. It sheltered and supported many revolutionaries, including Ha Van Phuong (Village Party Cell Secretary), Ta Van Dong (Commune Militia Commander), and Nguyen Van Giai (Chairman of the Resistance Committee). During this period, Nguyen Van Giai heroically sacrificed his life at the communal house, leaving a profound mark in the collective memory of Tra Son villagers.

From 1964 to 1966, the communal house continued to be used as a place of accommodation and combat training for Central Special Forces units, directly contributing to the resistance war against the United States. These contributions further affirmed the important role of Tra Son Communal House in the revolutionary history of the locality.

Tra Son Communal House has a long history of formation and development. According to village elders, combined with surviving architectural remnants such as stone column bases and stone steps, it can be determined that the communal house was built no later than the Le Trung Hung period (17th–18th centuries), approximately 300 years ago. The original communal house followed the traditional chu Dinh (丁-shaped) layout, consisting of five bays of the front hall and two bays of the rear sanctuary. Its structure was mainly made of ironwood, with wooden plank floors on both sides, tiled roofing, and gracefully curved roof corners—typical features of communal houses in the Northern Delta region.

The original site of the communal house was located about 200 meters from the present location. However, due to the passage of time and historical circumstances, around 1962–1963 the rear sanctuary deteriorated severely. The structure was subsequently dismantled, and its timber reused for school construction and dike building to serve production and daily life. Between 1973 and 1975, the villagers of Tra Son organized a procession to transfer the Tutelary Deity to Dong Mieu Shrine, located adjacent to the present communal house site, in order to continue worship and preserve local traditional beliefs.

Architecture

Tra Son Communal House is situated on the eastern side of Tra Son Village, on a site with attractive scenery, open space, and a broad, airy setting. The building faces southwest, a direction considered auspicious according to traditional beliefs. In front of the communal house stretches a vast expanse of open fields, offering a panoramic view, while Tra Son Mountain rises behind it as a natural backdrop, forming a harmonious “leaning on the mountain, facing the water” feng shui configuration.

The overall complex is relatively well planned, comprising key structures such as the main communal hall, drum tower, water pavilion, stele house, guest house, and ceremonial gate (nghi mon). These elements are arranged rationally to ensure functional efficiency while creating a unified and solemn architectural ensemble.

The ceremonial gate is constructed in the traditional four-pillar style and is set back from the main hall by a spacious courtyard. Together with the surrounding enclosure walls, it clearly delineates the sacred worship space from everyday village life and establishes a dignified ritual axis leading into the main sanctuary.

The main hall (dai dinh) is the central and most important structure of the complex. It follows a chu Dinh layout, consisting of a front ritual hall and a rear sanctuary, built with gable walls. The front hall includes three main bays and two side bays, measuring 16.6 meters in length and 8.6 meters in width. The central bay, the largest in size, houses the communal altar and the bat buu ritual objects used in traditional village ceremonies.

The roof of the front hall is covered with mui hai tiles, characteristic of Northern Delta communal houses. The ridge is decorated with the motif of two dragons flanking a ho phu (tiger mask), symbolizing protection and sacred authority. The ridge ends feature T-shaped finials combined with stylized cloud bands. The roof corners are adorned with reliefs of dragons, phoenixes, qilins, and clouds made of lime mortar, lending vitality and elegance to the overall structure.

The rear sanctuary consists of two bays arranged longitudinally and connected to the front hall at the central section, completing the chu Dinh layout. This is the most sacred space of the communal house, where the throne, spirit tablets of the Tutelary Deity, and principal ritual objects are enshrined.

Artifacts

Currently, Tra Son Communal House preserves several artifacts dating from the 19th–20th centuries, including:

  • Two Ha Ma steles made of blue stone, flat in form; the bases are damaged, with semicircular pediments and the inscription “Ha Ma” carved in relief at the center.
  • Two blue-stone column bases, undecorated, carved in three stepped tiers.
  • A wooden altar table of rectangular form with straight square legs, its body enclosed by thick wooden panels carved in relief with chrysanthemum motifs, sacred leaves, and seal-script patterns.
  • A bronze bell, with the handle cast as two bo lao dragons holding a pearl, their tails joined; the bell body bears five vertical lines intersected by raised circular knobs.
  • A wooden statue of the Tutelary Deity, carved in the round, wearing a winged official’s cap decorated with lotus and chrysanthemum motifs; square face, long ceremonial robe, right hand turned upward, left hand resting on the knee, feet in boots; the robe is carved with dragon-and-cloud motifs and ho phu designs, finished in reddish-brown lacquer and gilding.
  • A wooden incense altar (nhang an), rectangular with straight legs, divided into balanced panels carved in openwork and relief with motifs of dragons, ho phu, chrysanthemums, and clustered clouds.
  • A wooden spirit tablet, lacquered red and silver-gilt, carved with phoenixes, lotus flowers, and stylized leaves.
  • One set of bat buu ritual objects in a square wooden frame, centered around sacred items such as a scroll, lute, flower basket, wine gourd, fan, horn, book chest, and calligraphy brush.
  • A wooden inscription board, lacquered red and gilded, decorated with cloud bands.
  • A wooden chest for storing royal ordinations, lacquered red and gilded, undecorated.

Festival

The main festival of Tra Son Communal House is held annually for three days, from the 17th to the 19th of the first lunar month. The ritual team consists of ten participants: one chief worshipper, one prayer reader, one prayer bearer, one announcer, one responder, and five attendants serving the ritual wine offerings.
The ritual ceremonies are not only an occasion to commemorate the merits of the village Tutelary Deity, but also a moment of shared spiritual communion for the entire village community. The festive portion features traditional folk games such as wrestling, cau thum, cockfighting, tug of war, and pot smashing. The communal festival has become a powerful reminder that calls generations—young and old, men and women, including villagers living far from home—to return and pay reverent homage. This vividly reflects the moral principle of “remembering the source of one’s water,” a distinctive and enduring value in the spiritual and cultural life of Tra Son villagers.

On December 14, 2021, the People’s Committee of Hai Phong City issued Decision No. 3636/QD-UBND recognizing Tra Son Communal House, Kenh Giang Commune, Thuy Nguyen District, Hai Phong City as a City-Level Historical Monument.

Dinh Tra Son (Hai Phong)
