Name and Geographical Location
Located at the center of Vinh Phe village, Chu Minh commune, Ba Vi district, Hanoi city, Vinh Phe communal house, also known as Na communal house, is an ancient architectural work that not only carries artistic value but also serves as an important cultural community space for the local people.
Chu Minh commune lies along the Red River, 2 km south of Ba Vi district center and 50 km north of Hanoi capital. It borders Tay Dang town to the west and north, Minh Chau commune to the east, and Dong Quang and Tien Phong communes to the south.
Vinh Phe communal house is dedicated to Nguyen Dao Thong, father of Zen Master Nguyen Dao Hanh, who made great contributions in reclaiming wasteland, guiding villagers in rice cultivation, mulberry growing, and silkworm raising, thus contributing to the formation and development of this land.
History and Historical Figures
According to folklore, Vinh Phe communal house was first built during the Tran dynasty, marking the establishment of a cultural institution closely tied to the long-standing historical process of Chu Minh land. Situated in Chu Minh commune, Ba Vi district, the communal house has long been a spiritual foundation and a familiar community space for local residents.
Not only bearing profound spiritual significance, Vinh Phe communal house also stands out for its unique traditional architecture. The complex harmoniously integrates main components such as Dai Bai (Main Hall), Hau Cung (Rear Sanctuary), Nghi Mon (Ceremonial Gate), and the semicircular pond. However, after centuries of existence and service to spiritual life, the building gradually deteriorated, with many parts showing severe damage.
To preserve and promote the cultural and historical value of the relic, since 2021 the Ba Vi district authorities launched a restoration project for Vinh Phe communal house. Major components such as Dai Bai, Hau Cung, Nghi Mon, Ta Mac house, and the Incense Burning Shrine were restored, creating a spacious and dignified precinct as it appears today.
On April 20, 2024, the Party Committee, People’s Council, People’s Committee, and the Fatherland Front Committee of Chu Minh commune solemnly organized the inauguration ceremony of the restored Vinh Phe communal house. The event was combined with the traditional Na communal house and pagoda festival of Vinh Phe village, reaffirming the community’s determination to preserve cultural identity and sustain heritage in modern life.
Today, Vinh Phe communal house serves as a venue for cultural activities such as dancing, singing, and artistic exchanges, while also being a sacred space for spiritual practices and festivals associated with the village’s tutelary deity.
Nguyen Dao Thong, father of Zen Master Nguyen Dao Hanh, played a vital role in land reclamation, teaching villagers rice farming, mulberry planting, and silkworm rearing, contributing to the settlement and prosperity of the region. For his great contributions, he was venerated as the village’s tutelary deity. According to legend, Nguyen Dao Thong was a descendant of Zen Master Dai Dien, a lineage linked to Buddhism and the spirit of enlightenment.
Architectural Landscape
Vinh Phe communal house was built at the center of the village, facing southwest, in the traditional “Dinh” (丁)-shaped architectural style. It includes main structures such as Dai Bai, Nghi Mon, Ta/Huu Mac houses, and the semicircular pond in front. Situated within the residential area of Vinh Phe village, Chu Minh commune, it creates a close bond between the ancient cultural institution and the daily life of the community. Only a few kilometers away lies Na pagoda (Phuc Lam pagoda), together with the communal house forming a heritage complex of Vinh Phe village.
Nghi Mon (Ceremonial Gate)
In front of Nghi Mon lies a large semicircular pond surrounded by stone railings, providing both safety and separation of space. Across a concrete yard stands the Nghi Mon, consisting of four lantern-shaped pillars engraved with Chinese couplets. The two central pillars are taller than the two side ones. Atop the central pillars sit phoenix statues with heads lowered and tails raised, while the side pillars are decorated with guardian lion-dog (nghe) statues, creating balance and solemnity for the communal house entrance.
Ta/Huu Mac Houses
Passing through Nghi Mon leads to a spacious courtyard called the “San Chau” (ceremonial yard), the main space for rituals, community gatherings, and worship during traditional festivals. On either side of the courtyard are the Ta Mac and Huu Mac houses, symmetrically arranged, enhancing the harmony and balance of the architectural ensemble. These structures not only hold aesthetic value but also serve as reception and resting places for village elders and guests during communal events.
Dai Bai (Main Hall)
The Dai Bai structure follows the traditional “Dinh” (丁)-shaped layout, comprising two main sections: Dai Bai and Hau Cung. In front lies a spacious yard surrounded by lush greenery, with a large pond on the left, adding to the open and harmonious landscape of the heritage site.
The Dai Bai hall has five compartments and two wings, designed with four curved roofs in an open architectural style, without enclosing walls or doors, allowing ventilation and openness. The floor is elevated above the yard by three steps. At the roof ridge and eaves, artisans crafted embossed makara motifs at the ends and qilin biting the ridge beam at the roof corners.
A notable highlight of the Dai Bai is its six roof-supporting trusses crafted in the styles of “thuong gia chieng, chong ruong” and “ha ruong nach,” along with meticulously made porch brackets. Wooden components feature vivid carvings depicting dragons, immortals riding dragons, traditional dancers, and wine drinkers—reflecting the artistic style of the Late Le dynasty. Popular motifs such as dragons, spirals, leaves, blades, and guardian lions were rendered with refined craftsmanship, showcasing outstanding artistic achievement of the late 18th to early 19th century.
The Hau Cung (Rear Sanctuary) is simpler, with two compartments directly extending from the central compartment of Dai Bai. Inside, a wooden Upper Sanctuary (Thuong cung) stands on a long platform, enclosed on three sides with thin wooden boards, while the front features a four-panel altar door forming a sacred shrine housing the royal throne and ancestral tablets of the tutelary deity. In front of the shrine are ceremonial items such as the Eight Treasures set, altar doors, and palanquins.
Relics
Today, Vinh Phe communal house preserves numerous relics of great historical and artistic value, reflecting the cultural depth of Chu Minh community through different periods. Notable relics include two royal thrones and ancestral tablets in Nguyen dynasty style, along with 12 royal decrees granted by successive emperors to honor the village’s tutelary deity. The earliest decree dates back to the Quang Trung reign in 1793, and the latest to the ninth year of Khai Dinh’s reign (1924).
Other preserved artifacts include a wooden Eight Treasures set, an 18th-century Tho Ha ceramic incense burner, as well as wooden incense burners, candlesticks, flags, fans, drums, and canopies. These items not only showcase the finesse of traditional craftsmanship but also serve as living evidence of the community’s enduring heritage preservation across centuries.
Festival
The Vinh Phe communal house festival is one of the traditional festivals of Chu Minh commune, Ba Vi district, Hanoi, held annually from the 11th to the 13th day of the third lunar month.
The festival begins in the communal house area. From the morning of the 10th day, villagers from surrounding areas bring offerings such as ornamental trees, chickens, ducks, incense, and candles to prepare for the rituals. The opening ceremony is led by representatives of the Chu Minh People’s Committee, followed by a palanquin procession, folk singing parades, and evening folk performances at Na communal house and pagoda.
The main festival, held on the 11th day, features solemn ceremonies including the “Ong” ritual, palanquin procession, offerings, and blessing ceremonies. Parallel to the rituals, vibrant cultural activities take place: folk singing, quan ho singing, and traditional games such as archery, stick pushing, and tug of war—recreating the atmosphere of a traditional village festival. A distinctive highlight is the performance of quan ho folk songs, leaving a lasting impression on visitors.
On the evenings of the 11th and 12th, art performances and folk singing exchanges by troupes from neighboring villages attract large audiences, concluding with the festival closing on the 13th.
The Vinh Phe communal house festival is not only an occasion for locals to express gratitude to their ancestors but also a platform to promote traditional culture, arts, and heritage of Chu Minh commune and Ba Vi district. It also stimulates local economic activities through the presentation of handicrafts, cuisine, and cultural tourism, creating a festival space that is both sacred and vibrant.

Dai Bai (salle principale)
