Name and Geographic Location
Lang Truong Thieu is the burial site of Chua Nguyen Phuc Thuan (1754–1777), posthumously titled Due Ton Hieu Dinh Hoang de. He was the ninth and final Nguyen lord among the nine generations who ruled Dang Trong (Cochinchina), commonly known as Chua Dinh.
Today, the mausoleum is located on La Khe Mountain, within La Khe Village, Huong Tho Commune, Huong Tra Town, Hue City. The site lies on the left bank of the Ta Trach River, approximately 400 meters from the riverbank.
Originally, the tomb was situated in Binh Duong District, Gia Dinh territory. In the 8th year of Gia Long (1809), under the reign of Gia Long, the remains were relocated to the present site in order to integrate the tomb into the unified system of Nguyen lords’ mausoleums in the Hue region.
Lang Truong Thieu is located about 120 meters northwest of Lang Truong Co — the mausoleum of Nguyen Hoang.
History and Historical Figure
History of Construction and Restoration
Nguyen Phuc Thuan passed away in the 10th lunar month of 1777. Initially, he was buried in Binh Duong District, Gia Dinh Province.
According to Kham dinh Dai Nam hoi dien su le (Ministry of Public Works, Volume 216), in 1808 the Gia Long court organized a large-scale construction and restoration campaign involving 17 mausoleums of the Nguyen lords and their consorts of the previous regime. In the year Ky Ty (1809), his remains were reinterred in La Khe Village (Huong Tra, Thua Thien), and the mausoleum was officially named Truong Thieu.
The relocation, construction, and restoration of the Nguyen lords’ tombs were not merely acts of monument repair; they also served to affirm the dynastic legitimacy and succession of the Nguyen monarchy, while expressing reverence and gratitude toward those who had laid the foundation of Nguyen rule in Dang Trong.
At present, Lang Truong Thieu is in a state of serious deterioration. Many sections of the enclosure walls have collapsed, with large breaches penetrating the structure. Most of the parapets have disappeared, causing the overall architectural form to lose its original appearance and posing ongoing risks of further damage if not promptly conserved.
Historical Figure
Nguyen Phuc Thuan (1754–1777) was the sixteenth son of Vu Vuong Nguyen Phuc Khoat and Cong nu Nguyen Phuc Ngoc Cau. He ascended the throne in 1765 at the age of 12, assuming the title Dinh Vuong, at a time when the Phu Xuan court had already fallen under the control of the powerful mandarin Truong Phuc Loan.
His accession was not the result of legitimate succession but stemmed from Truong Phuc Loan’s alteration of the late ruler’s testament, eliminating rightful heirs such as Nguyen Phuc Luan. Consequently, real power was concentrated in the hands of Quoc pho Truong Thuc Loan, while Dinh Vuong effectively held no substantive authority.
During his reign, the Dang Trong administration experienced comprehensive decline:
The court was mired in corruption; divisions within the royal clan deepened; discipline and order deteriorated.
The policy of minting zinc currency led to severe inflation, exhausting the population’s livelihood.
In the south, conflicts with Xiem La and Chan Lap demonstrated that military potential still existed, but strategic governance capacity increasingly weakened.
In 1771, the Tay Son movement led by Nguyen Nhac, Nguyen Hue, and Nguyen Lu erupted, rapidly dismantling the defensive structure of the Nguyen lords. In 1774, Trinh forces from Dang Ngoai advanced into Thuan Hoa, forcing the Nguyen regime to retreat to Gia Dinh, caught between two converging military pressures.
At the end of 1776, under internal strain, Nguyen Phuc Thuan abdicated in favor of Nguyen Phuc Duong and assumed the title Thai Thuong vuong. However, the situation of “two kings concurrently” further fragmented the remaining forces. In 1777, Tay Son troops attacked Gia Dinh, captured, and executed both rulers, thereby ending nearly two centuries of Nguyen lords’ rule in Dang Trong.
The mausoleum faces northwest, following the traditional layout of Nguyen lords’ tombs, though on a comparatively modest scale.
The complex is enclosed by two brick-built walls:
Outer enclosure: circumference approximately 117.2 meters, height 2.51 meters, forming the principal protective boundary.
Inner enclosure: circumference 64.4 meters, maximum height about 1.9 meters, narrowing the spatial composition and concentrating solemnity on the central burial site.
The tomb itself consists of a two-tiered stepped structure:
Upper tier: 1.90 meters wide, 2.33 meters long, 0.28 meters high.
Lower tier: 2.50 meters wide, 3.05 meters long, 0.35 meters high.
This configuration provides a stable base while elevating the burial mound, emphasizing the central axis of the mausoleum. An incense altar is placed in front of the tomb in accordance with the standard arrangement of Nguyen lords’ mausoleums.
However, several decorative architectural elements are no longer intact:
The screen wall behind the gate has had its decorative motifs removed, leaving only a plain wall surface.
The two gate pillars in front of the tomb have been damaged.
The rear screen wall still preserves faint traces of carved dragon reliefs, indicating the former presence of courtly artistic elements. To the left of the screen wall is an ornamental planter, creating a visual accent within the worship space.
Classification
Lang Truong Thieu is part of the Nguyen Hoang lords’ mausoleum complex (including Truong Co, Truong Thai, Truong Thieu, and the mausoleum of Hai Dong Quan Vuong Nguyen Phuc Dong). The complex was recognized as a National Heritage Site under Decision No. 2009/1998-QD/BVHTT dated September 26, 1998.

Niveau supérieur : largeur 1,90 m, longueur 2,33 m, hauteur 0,28 m.
Niveau inférieur : largeur 2,50 m, longueur 3,05 m, hauteur 0,35 m.
