Chu Ky Son Tomb (Hoi An, Quang Nam)
Name and Location
The tomb of Chu Ky Son is located on an earthen mound in Area 11, Block 2, Son Phong Ward. In the past, this land belonged to Tam Vong xu, Son Tay hamlet of Son Phong village. From the Hoi An bus station, one travels westward approximately 1,800 meters along the route Huynh Thuc Khang – Phan Dinh Phung – Tran Hung Dao, reaching Cua Dai Street. Continuing about 300 meters and turning onto a small dirt road on the left, then proceeding another 60 meters, one arrives at the site. The monument is accessible by road transportation. Today, the Chu Ky Son tomb complex administratively belongs to Area 11, Block 2, Hoi An Ward, Quang Nam.
Owner of the Tomb
Chu Ky Son was one of the “Thap lao” (Ten Elders) who made major contributions to the establishment and development of the Minh Huong village community. Together with the other nine elders, he has been worshipped by the Minh Huong villagers in the ancestral hall of the Minh Huong pioneers, known as Tuy Tien Duong.
Under the Nguyen Lords, the Tau Vu administration included positions such as Cai tau, Tri tau, Cai ba tau, Cai phu tau, Ky luc tau, and Phu tau, each generally staffed by two officials. These positions were not necessarily all held by Chinese individuals; however, in reality, the majority were entrusted to Chinese merchants or Minh Huong people because they possessed superior knowledge and experience in maritime commerce compared to the Vietnamese.
According to numerous documentary sources, Minh Huong village records, ancestral tablets at Dinh Thanh Minh of the Minh Huong community, and especially the inscription on Chu Ky Son’s tomb stele, the following text is recorded:
“Hien khao an thuc noi vien, Cai phu tau, an Tu hau, Ky Son Chu cong mo; tue thu Giap Tuat nien, Manh Dong nguyet, cat dan; Hieu nam Chu Thu nuong phung tu lap thach.”
Thus, Chu Ky Son held the office of Cai phu tau. Based on the chronology of the “Thap lao” during the Nguyen Lords period and the cyclical year Giap Tuat, it can be confidently concluded that Chu Ky Son lived during the seventeenth century, served as Cai phu tau, and died no later than 1694. The tomb monument itself was also constructed in that year by his son, who erected the stele.
Over the long course of history, the monument must have undergone several restorations, though no one today remembers how many times or in which years these repairs occurred. Nevertheless, the scale, architectural form, and building materials of the tomb have remained largely intact, preserving the style of eighteenth-century tomb architecture.
At present, the descendants of Chu Ky Son appear to have dispersed or disappeared. Prior to 1975, ritual worship was conducted collectively by the Minh Huong village community at Tuy Tien Duong.
Architecture
The tomb faces east and is situated upon a high mound sloping downward from the west at the rear toward the east at the front, overlooking a small water channel flowing toward the Hoi An River. The surrounding area remains open and spacious today.
The overall architectural composition of the tomb consists of four principal components constructed above ground using lime mortar, composite material (tam hop), stone, and masonry foundations.
Foundation Structure
The foundation consists of three successive tiers arranged from front to rear:
- The first tier rises 35 cm above the natural ground level in front, measuring 3.15 m long and 1 m wide, bordered by a surrounding edge 40 cm wide.
- The second tier stands 30 cm higher than the first, measuring 2 m long and 1.65 m wide, with side borders 45 cm wide. At the ends of these borders, the structure expands outward perpendicularly about 2.16 m on each side, terminating in circular raised spiral motifs resembling snail-shell whorls.
- The third tier forms the principal foundation of the tomb, standing 15 cm above the second tier and measuring 4 m long by 3.6 m wide.
Enclosure and Burial Mound
The “Quynh” section, enclosing the burial mound, is designed in the form of an arched armrest-shaped enclosure. At both ends are circular raised masses 60 cm in diameter decorated with spiral motifs.
The burial mound itself rises prominently in the form of a half-mango shape. Its highest point stands 70 cm above the foundation platform, while the mound base measures 80 cm × 160 cm.
Tomb Stele
The tomb stele section includes a stone pedestal measuring 80 cm × 46 cm × 14 cm. On either side are masonry pillars embracing the central stone stele, together forming a composition resembling a screen wall.
The central stele is made of brown salt stone measuring 85 cm × 52 cm × 11 cm. Its border is carved in raised floral vine motifs, while the stele crown is decorated with relief carvings of the sun and flaming clouds. These decorative patterns clearly reflect the artistic style of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century steles in Hoi An.
Hau Tho Stele
Approximately 3 meters northeast of the tomb stands a “Hau tho” stele. It is enclosed on three sides by an armrest-shaped curved wall constructed from lime composite material and oriented southward.
From the perspective of traditional belief, this was an important component of a tomb complex and was especially common in Hoi An during earlier centuries, particularly for deceased individuals who had held official rank, social influence, or considerable wealth.
Artifacts
Today, the Chu Ky Son composite tomb site preserves primarily the stone stele pedestal measuring 80 cm × 46 cm × 14 cm, together with the flanking masonry pillars surrounding the central stele in the form of a screen wall.
The central brown salt-stone stele measures 85 cm × 52 cm × 11 cm. Its border bears raised floral vine carvings, while the stele crown is decorated with reliefs of the sun and flaming clouds, clearly displaying decorative motifs characteristic of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century tomb steles.
Most other artifacts associated with the monument have deteriorated or disappeared.
Historical and Scientific Significance
Historically, the monument serves as reliable evidence for studying the arrival, establishment, development, and role of the Chinese community in general, and the Minh Huong community in particular, in the history of Hoi An. It is also an important source for historians and scholars of ethnology and sociology researching the Hoi An population during the period of the town’s formation and prosperity.
Architecturally, the tomb is a representative funerary structure of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and provides valuable information for scholars studying tomb architecture in Hoi An within the context of the cultural and religious interaction between Vietnamese and Chinese traditions.
If properly preserved, restored, and integrated into the surrounding landscape, the site could become an attractive destination for tourism and scholarly research within the broader context of the Hoi An Ancient Town.
Classification
The Chu Ky Son composite tomb was designated a provincial-level historical and cultural monument in 2008.

Tombeau de Chu Ky Son (Hoi An, Quang Nam)
