Architecture and Landscape

Truc Lam Hau Giang Monastery occupies a large campus of over 4 hectares (40,000 m²), situated within the quiet and tranquil rural landscape of the Mekong Delta. The overall architectural design follows traditional Vietnamese Buddhist aesthetics, modeled after prominent Truc Lam Monasteries in Northern Vietnam, while harmoniously integrating with the local water-based cultural characteristics of the Mekong Delta.

This architectural style fosters an atmosphere of serenity and solemnity, balancing traditional aesthetics with adaptation to the southern climate.

The complex comprises 16 major and minor structures across the 4-hectare campus. Key components include: the Main Hall, Ancestor Hall, Bell Tower, Drum Tower, Tam Quan Gate, Guest House, Abbot’s Residence, Lecture Hall, Library, Monk Quarters, Nun Quarters, Dining Hall, Rest Pavilion, Outdoor Quan Am Statue, and the Au Co Shrine.

At the center of the monastery is the Main Hall, the largest and most important structure in the complex. It features a solemn design with curved tiled roofs, intricate dragon and phoenix motifs, and a decorous interior. Inside, a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha in meditation is enshrined, surrounded by painted panels, calligraphic inscriptions, and bas-reliefs conveying profound Buddhist teachings.

Adjacent structures include the Monk Hall, Nun Hall, Ancestor Hall, Guest House, Dining Hall, Library, meditation rooms, and the Zen Garden, arranged to create a harmonious integration of architecture and nature. The Zen Garden is designed in accordance with Zen principles, featuring winding paths, scattered gravel, clusters of ornamental plants, Buddha statues, and tranquil ponds, providing an ideal setting for meditation and reflection.

The monastery also features a grand Tam Quan Gate, reflecting traditional architectural style with three entrances symbolizing the Three Gates of Liberation: the Gate of Emptiness, the Gate of Formlessness, and the Gate of Actionlessness. The campus is surrounded by lush greenery, ornamental flowers, and iconic Mekong Delta coconut trees, creating a graceful landscape that blends seamlessly with nature.

From an elevated perspective, Truc Lam Hau Giang Monastery appears as a serene spiritual oasis within the fertile delta.
