Quan Trieu Temple Festival – Cao Bang

Time

The Quan Trieu Temple Festival is held annually on the 8th and 9th days of the first lunar month, coinciding with the festival of Vien Minh Pagoda.

Location

Quan Trieu Temple is located in Da Quan Hamlet, Hung Dao Commune, Cao Bang City, opposite Vien Minh Pagoda.

History and Artifacts

Quan Trieu Temple honors Duong Tu Minh, a loyal general who defended the northern borders of Dai Viet under the Ly dynasty. The temple was originally built in the shape of the Chinese character “Nhị” (二), with a worship hall and rear chamber. To the right is a shrine for Princess Thieu Dung (Hong Lien), his wife. The royal court conferred honorary titles recognizing their contributions to the nation and border defense.

Duong Tu Minh, also venerated as Duc Thanh Duom or Cao Son Quy Minh, was of the Tay ethnic group, from Ban Danh (Quan Trieu, Phu Luong, Thai Nguyen). His father served as a regional administrator and distinguished himself in battles against the Song dynasty. Legends say that Duong Tu Minh was born to elderly parents, grew up strong and talented, and displayed a deep love for the people and the country.

At age 20, he organized local militias to combat bandits. In 1127, King Ly Nhan Tong summoned him to the royal court, appointing him as the administrator of the highland region, marrying him to Princess Dien Binh, and entrusting him with Phu Luong prefecture, a strategic northern border area. In 1144, he married Princess Thieu Dung (Hong Lien) and was promoted to Pho Ma Duy Uy.

In 1145, when the Song invaders led by Dam Huu Luong attacked Quang Nguyen and Thong Nong, Duong Tu Minh was appointed general-in-chief, leading Vietnamese troops to victory and securing the northern frontier. Celebrated for his integrity, he once opposed the powerful minister Do Anh Vu and later retired to Duom Mountain, where he passed away. Folk tales say that before dying, he bathed in the Phu Luong River, donned traditional Tay clothing, and ascended to heaven on horseback.

To honor his virtues, locals built the Duc Thanh Duom Shrine. Subsequent dynasties posthumously conferred him the rank of Thuong Dang Than (Highest Deity). While governing Phu Luong, he and Princess Thieu Dung visited Quang Nguyen to stabilize the population, teach agriculture and husbandry, and improve livelihoods. After his death, villagers of Xuan Linh (Thach Lam prefecture, now Hung Dao Commune) built Quan Trieu Temple to commemorate him—a symbol of loyalty, patriotism, and care for the people in Ly dynasty history.

The temple has been restored and renovated. On the right side of the temple grounds stands a bell tower (approx. 5 m²) housing a large bell (height 178 cm, body 142 cm, handle 36 cm, mouth diameter 106 cm), similar in design to Vien Minh Pagoda’s bell. Cast in 1611, both bells are listed as national artistic relics (Decision No. 2861-QD/BT, Sept 4, 1995) and recognized as National Treasures (Decision No. 2496/QD-TTg, Dec 22, 2016).

Quan Trieu Temple is recognized as a provincial historical-cultural site (Decision No. 2487/QD-UBND, Nov 4, 2008).

Festival

The Quan Trieu Temple Festival is a highlight of the local spring spiritual calendar, beginning on the 8th day of the first lunar month with solemn rituals led by villagers of Da Quan Hamlet.

From early morning, locals clean and decorate the temple, preparing incense, fresh flowers, and offerings. Traditional offerings include boiled pigs, chickens, sticky rice, fruits, and other ceremonial items, symbolizing respect for the deities.

During the ritual, community representatives perform incense offerings and prayers in a solemn, reverent atmosphere, invoking blessings for national peace, favorable weather, abundant harvests, and the well-being of the people, while expressing gratitude to the ancestral spirits and deities. The ritual strengthens communal bonds and preserves local cultural traditions.

The festival day (9th lunar day) features lively celebrations with folk games, sports, and cultural performances, attracting local residents and visitors. Traditional games include swinging, shuttlecock kicking, and other folk competitions, while communal singing, dancing, and performances enrich the cultural experience.

Throughout the festival, participants come to the temple to offer incense, pray for luck, health, and prosperity, making the event a space where spiritual and cultural practices intersect. The festival thus preserves and promotes traditional values of village temples and communal heritage in contemporary life.

Historical Significance

The Quan Trieu Temple Festival is not only a spring ritual but also reflects the historical development and identity of the local community. By maintaining rituals over generations, it embodies the moral principle of “remembering the source”, honoring deities and ancestors, and preserving cultural memory.

The festival illustrates the organization, customs, and spiritual beliefs of the local people through the centuries, serving as a living document for studying the history, culture, and social life of Cao Bang, as well as the role of temples in Vietnamese communal life.

Quan Trieu Temple Festival

Time

The Quan Trieu Temple Festival is held annually on the 8th and 9th days of the first lunar month.

Location

Quan Trieu Temple is located in Da Quan hamlet, Hung Dao commune, Cao Bang city, opposite Vien Minh Pagoda.

History and Artifacts

Quan Trieu Temple is dedicated to Duong Tu Minh, a loyal and distinguished general who played a major role in protecting the northern borders of Dai Viet under the Ly dynasty. The temple was built early on in the shape of the character “Nhị” (two), including a main hall and a rear sanctuary. On the right side is a hall honoring Princess Thieu Dung (Hong Lien), his wife. The imperial court conferred honorary titles to recognize the merits of Duong Tu Minh and his consort in assisting the nation and guarding the borders.

Duong Tu Minh, also known by locals as Duc Thanh Duom or Cao Son Quy Minh, was of the Tay ethnic group, born in Ban Danh (Quan Trieu, Phu Luong, Thai Nguyen). His father served as a district administrator, achieving many military victories against the Song dynasty, and was known for integrity and benevolence. Legend says Duong Tu Minh was born when his parents were elderly, grew up strong and talented, and showed early patriotism and care for the people.

At age 20, facing rampant banditry, he organized local youth into a militia to protect the villages. In 1127, King Ly Nhan Tong summoned him to the court, appointed him as district administrator of the upper regions, arranged his marriage to Princess Dien Binh, and gave him authority over Phu Luong prefecture – a strategic northern border area. In 1144, he married Princess Thieu Dung (Hong Lien) and was titled Pho Ma Do Uy.

In 1145, when the Song forces led by Dam Huu Luong invaded Quang Nguyen and Thong Nong, Duong Tu Minh was appointed general-in-chief to lead the army against the invaders. Under his command, Dai Viet forces swiftly achieved victory, maintaining the border. Upon returning, he was formally welcomed by King Ly Anh Tong and the court.

Besides his military achievements, Duong Tu Minh was renowned for integrity and courage, even confronting the powerful minister Do Anh Vu. After failing, he retired to Duom Mountain, where he passed away. Folk tales say that before his death, he bathed in the Phu Luong River, donned a Tay chàm garment, and rode a horse into the sky.

To honor his merits and virtue, people built the Duc Thanh Duom Temple. Subsequent dynasties posthumously conferred him the title of Superior Deity. While governing Phu Luong, he and Princess Thieu Dung visited Quang Nguyen to stabilize the population, teach agriculture and animal husbandry, and help the people prosper. After his death, villagers in Xuan Linh (Thach Lam district, now Hung Dao commune) built Quan Trieu Temple to commemorate him – a Pho Ma of two Ly dynasty kings and an emblem of loyalty, patriotism, and care for the people in Dai Viet history.

Currently, the temple has been restored. Within the complex, on the right side, there is a bell tower about 5 m² housing a large bell: 178 cm high, 142 cm body height, 36 cm handle, and 106 cm mouth diameter, with design similar to Vien Minh Pagoda’s bell. The bell was cast in 1611, and together with the Vien Minh bell, it is listed as a national artistic monument (Decision No. 2861-QD/BT, 04/09/1995) and recognized as a National Treasure (Decision No. 2496/QD-TTg, 22/12/2016).

Quan Trieu Temple was recognized as a provincial historical-cultural monument by the Cao Bang People’s Committee (Decision No. 2487/QD-UBND, 04/11/2008).

Festival Activities

Annually, the Quan Trieu Temple Festival is held simultaneously with the Vien Minh Pagoda Festival on the 8th and 9th days of the first lunar month, marking the beginning of local spring spiritual activities.

The ritual part is solemn, taking place on the evening of the 8th day of the lunar month, managed directly by the residents of Da Quan hamlet. Early in the day, villagers clean the temple grounds, decorate the worship space, and prepare incense, fresh flowers, and offerings. Offerings include boiled pigs, chickens, sticky rice, fruits, and other necessary ritual items, demonstrating respect for the deities enshrined in the temple.

At the designated time, representatives perform incense-offering rituals and prayers in a solemn atmosphere. Prayers mainly ask for national peace, favorable weather, good harvests, prosperity, and happiness for the people, while expressing gratitude to ancestors and guardian deities. The ritual reflects deep spiritual significance and fosters community cohesion, continuing local folk cultural traditions.

On the 9th day of the lunar month, the festival enters the entertainment phase, held in a joyful and lively atmosphere, attracting local residents and visitors. Activities include folk games, cultural performances, traditional singing and dancing, and sports. Games like swinging and tossing balls are especially engaging for young people and visitors. Folk performances and sports enrich spiritual life and reflect the cultural lifestyle of the local community.

During the festival, visitors from near and far come to offer incense, worship, and pray for fortune, health, and peace in the new year. The festival is thus not only a spring celebration but also a space connecting spiritual worship with cultural activities, helping preserve and promote traditional values of temples and pagodas in contemporary life.

Historical Significance

The Quan Trieu Temple Festival is not only a spring folk ritual but also has profound historical significance, reflecting the long-standing development of the local community. Through generations, traditional ceremonies express the principle of “remembering one’s roots” and gratitude toward ancestors and deities who protected the village, preserving historical memory and cultural identity.

The festival space is a spiritual hub for the community, connecting generations and strengthening social cohesion. Its annual maintenance demonstrates the enduring vitality of traditional values despite historical upheavals.

Additionally, the festival contributes to preserving and promoting folk cultural practices, reflecting the community’s organizational skills, customs, and beliefs across time. It serves as a “living document” for studying local history, socio-cultural development, and the role of temples, shrines, and pagodas in Vietnamese life.
