Các tay chèo mặc quần cộc và áo bà ba ngắn tay do làng may sẵn.

Time of the Festival
The Vinh Tuy Boat Racing Festival (Hoi Boi Chai Vinh Tuy) is held annually on the 10th day of the eighth lunar month.
From the evening of the 9th day, elders in the communal houses of the five hamlets perform sacrificial rites to report to the Thanh Hoang (village tutelary deity). Afterward, villagers prepare ritual offerings and organize the procession.
Early the following morning, at the predetermined hour, delegations from all hamlets carry their offerings in procession to the main communal house (Dinh Ca) located in Thuong hamlet, where the common rituals of the entire village are conducted.
After the completion of the ceremonial rites, the boat racing festival takes place on the Red River (Song Hong). The entire festival is held within a single morning and usually concludes around midday.
Location
The boat racing festival takes place in Vinh Tuy commune, Thanh Tri district, now belonging to the southern area of Hanoi.
Several centuries ago, this land was known as Vinh Hung trang. Over time, as the population increased, the settlement gradually expanded and divided into several hamlets: Doai, Thuong, Dong Thien, Tan Khai, and Trang Lap.
Each hamlet possesses its own communal house, yet all share the worship of the same Thanh Hoang deity. The religious center of the village is the main communal house (Dinh Ca) in Thuong hamlet, where the principal rituals of the festival take place.
Nearby stands the Nghe Boi shrine, an architectural structure built in the chong diem style with two tiers and eight roofs, situated close to the riverbank. Inside the shrine are a stone incense altar and two stone guardian statues. This is where villagers perform rituals to Thuy Quan and Thuy Than (water deities) before the boat race begins.
History
Historical records recount that in the eighth lunar month of the year Canh Dan (1470), the Champa king Tra Toan personally led an army of more than one hundred thousand soldiers, including both naval and land forces along with war elephants and horses, to attack Chau Hoa.
The frontier commander Pham Van Hien, unable to resist the invasion, withdrew the population into the citadel and urgently requested military assistance from the royal court.
In response to the crisis, in the first lunar month of the following year, King Le Thanh Tong issued a set of military regulations known as the Dinh Chinh Lenh, consisting of 52 articles governing the conduct of the campaign. He mobilized approximately 260,000 elite soldiers and personally led the expedition against Champa.
The king also composed the military treatise Binh Chiem Sach, distributed to military units, outlining ten conditions for assured victory and three matters requiring careful preparation. Through skillful strategic deception, the Dai Viet army successfully captured the Champa capital Cha Ban on the 1st day of the third lunar month in the year Tan Mao (1471). King Tra Toan was captured alive together with more than thirty thousand Champa soldiers.
While escorting Tra Toan and the prisoners back to Thang Long, the king noticed that the boat carrying Tra Toan was too small to accommodate all of his wives. The king therefore allowed him to select two wives to accompany him, while the others would be escorted to the capital and later returned.
More than five centuries have passed since this victory, and it might seem to remain only within the pages of official chronicles. However, in Vinh Tuy commune, Thanh Tri district, there still exists a Ngoc pha luc (sacred genealogy) recording the legend of the village deity.
This genealogy was compiled in 1573 by Nguyen Binh, a scholar of the Han Lam Vien Dong Cac, and later recopied in 1750 during the Canh Hung reign by Nguyen Hien, supervisor of the royal cult of deities.
The text praises the magnanimity and benevolence of King Le Thanh Tong toward the Champa people after their defeat.
According to the genealogy, some Champa people were allowed to remain in the area to cultivate land and establish new settlements. Later generations built a communal house to worship their former king and honored him with the title Nha Cat Dai Vuong.
Because the character “Nha” coincided with the personal name of Princess An Dinh, the title was later changed to Nha Cat Dai Vuong. The deity was also worshipped together with Princess Nguyet Nga, who received the honorific title Trinh Thien Phu Nhan.
This act of royal compassion embodied the principle of subduing people without causing them to lose their lineage, and it was remembered by the villagers through continuous worship.
Because the Champa settlers contributed to cultivating the new land, the royal court named the area Vinh Hung trang, meaning “everlasting prosperity.”
Over time, as the population expanded, the community gradually divided into the hamlets of Doai, Thuong, Dong Thien, Tan Khai, and Trang Lap.
In 1956, Trang Lap hamlet was incorporated into Linh Nam commune, and in 1982 the area of Vinh Tuy Doai was annexed into the inner city to establish Vinh Tuy ward.
Despite many administrative changes, each hamlet still maintains its own communal house while jointly worshipping the same tutelary deity. Various feudal dynasties conferred royal titles upon the deity as Nha Cat Dai Vuong, accompanied by the worship of Princess Nguyet Nga, honored as Trinh Thien Phu Nhan.
To commemorate the martial tradition of their ancestors—people accustomed to warfare on rivers and waterways—the residents of Vinh Tuy organize the boat racing festival on the Red River every year on the 10th day of the eighth lunar month.
Ritual Section
The ritual section of the festival begins on the evening of the 9th day of the eighth lunar month, when each hamlet conducts ceremonies to report to the Thanh Hoang deity at its communal house.
The following morning, each hamlet organizes a procession carrying offerings to the main communal house (Dinh Ca).
At the head of the procession is a lion dance troupe, followed by five-element ceremonial flags. Next come two bearers carrying a ritual tray shaded by a yellow parasol.
The tray, lacquered in red and gilded with gold, contains offerings such as persimmons, bananas, green rice flakes (com), and tram fruits. On the tray are also twelve large ceremonial cakes made from glutinous rice.
The procession is accompanied by a drum ensemble consisting of one large drum, four smaller drums, and a gong. Elderly men wearing traditional silk robes and turbans escort the procession.
Each hamlet also selects four elders dressed in ritual attire to join the communal sacrificial team.
After the ceremony at the communal house, the procession continues to the Nghe Boi shrine, where rituals are performed to Thuy Te and Thuy Quan, the water deities.
When the rituals conclude, the sound of gongs and drums echoes across the river, signaling the imminent start of the boat race.
Festival Activities
The highlight of the festival is the boat race on the Red River.
Each hamlet prepares a long, narrow boat approximately 7 meters in length. Each boat is manned by nine rowers, selected by the hamlet without restriction on age as long as they are strong and skilled swimmers.
Each side of the boat has four rowers, while at the front is a crew member who manages the bow hook and at the rear is the helmsman steering the boat.
The helmsman wears a brown tunic, red sash, and red headscarf. The rowers wear short trousers and short-sleeved ba ba shirts, which are prepared by the village.
To distinguish between teams from different hamlets, each crew wears clothing in different colors—for example, the Doai hamlet team wears red, while others may wear white, blue, or yellow.
When the command drum sounds and the signal flag drops, the boats surge forward rapidly across the water. The synchronized strokes of the paddles create a lively and dramatic spectacle.
The race consists of a single round.
If the river water level is high, the boats race along two waterways circling the Nghe Boi shrine, covering a distance of approximately 4 kilometers.
If the water is shallow, the boats cross to the opposite riverbank and then return to the shrine to finish the race.
At the end of the race, the first-place boat receives three coins and twelve pieces of red silk, the second-place boat receives three coins, and the third-place boat receives two coins.
Following the boat race, several traditional folk games are also organized, including:
Stick fighting
Whip fighting
Traditional wrestling
Each competition usually consists of three rounds to determine the first, second, and third prizes.
The festival concludes around midday of the same day.

Periode d’organisation
Chaque village prepare un bateau long d’environ 7 metres.
