Lễ hội phản ánh sự giao thoa hài hòa giữa Phật giáo và tín ngưỡng dân gian, gửi gắm ước vọng về quốc thái dân an, mùa màng tươi tốt, đời sống no đủ, bình yên.

Dong Lan Pagoda Festival
Time
The festival takes place on the 7th–8th days of the first lunar month.
Location
Dong Lan Pagoda, Hung Dao Commune, Cao Bang City, Cao Bang Province.
History and Cultural Relics
Dong Lan Pagoda is a historical monument with a long formation process dating back to the Le–Mac period. Before the pagoda was built, Dong Lan Hill was the site of a temple dedicated to two brothers, Tran Quy and Tran Kien. According to local folklore, the two brothers possessed extraordinary abilities and were credited with slaying evil creatures, thereby protecting the peaceful lives of the local people. In recognition of their merits, the Le court posthumously conferred titles upon them: Tran Kien was honored as Cai Cong Dai Vuong, a Lower-ranked Deity, while Tran Quy was bestowed the title Dong Lan Dai Vuong, a Middle-ranked Deity. Out of gratitude, local inhabitants established a shrine and offered incense to them during the spring and autumn seasons.
By the late 11th century, during the Ly dynasty, Dong Lan Pagoda was officially constructed to meet the community’s needs for Buddhist worship. During the Mac dynasty, in the Xin Hai year, the 19th year of the Can Thong reign (corresponding to the 16th century), the Mac empress sponsored a major reconstruction of the pagoda. It was rebuilt according to the Dinh-shaped architectural layout, comprising a front hall, rear hall, two side corridors, and monks’ quarters, forming a stable space for religious practice and monastic life.
A distinctive feature of the pagoda is the presence of an incense burner dedicated to Thach Sanh, a heroic figure in the Tay people’s folktale tradition, associated with the legendary feat of slaying a giant serpent and restoring peace to the community. Owing to its outstanding historical and cultural values, Dong Lan Pagoda was recognized in 1997 as a provincial-level historical–cultural monument.
After undergoing multiple renovations and restorations, the pagoda has gradually taken on a more dignified appearance. The ancestral worship hall currently consists of five compartments, including three main bays for ancestral worship and two auxiliary bays. The pagoda is overseen by a resident abbot and caretakers responsible for its maintenance and preservation. Notably, at the end of 2014, an Avalokitesvara (Guanyin) Hall was newly constructed using ironwood, featuring intricate carvings of the Four Sacred Creatures (Tu Linh). With a total area of over 100 square meters, the hall was funded through social contributions, further enhancing the sacred space and meeting the spiritual needs of the local population.
On January 15, 1997, Dong Lan Pagoda was officially granted a certificate recognizing it as a provincial-level historical–cultural monument by the Provincial People’s Committee. In 2004, the State allocated funds for the restoration of the main sanctuary, the addition of Buddhist statues, and improvements to the pagoda grounds. However, the original architectural features of the pagoda have not been fully preserved. Earlier artifacts such as bells, statues, and parallel sentences have been lost over time, leaving only newer objects donated by Buddhist devotees in later periods.
In 2007, with the approval of the Provincial People’s Committee, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha appointed a resident monk to the pagoda to serve the religious needs of the local population. Dong Lan Pagoda has since become a regular place of worship for Buddhists from across the province, particularly on the first and fifteenth days of each lunar month.
Dong Lan Pagoda Festival
The Dong Lan Pagoda Festival is held annually on the 8th day of the first lunar month and is one of the most important cultural and religious activities of the local community. It also marks the beginning of a series of early spring festivals in the region. The festival reflects the harmonious integration of Buddhism and folk beliefs, embodying aspirations for national peace, favorable weather, abundant harvests, and a prosperous and tranquil life.
The ceremonial section takes place solemnly from early morning, beginning with the opening ritual, the ringing of the bell, the invitation of the Buddhas, and chanting ceremonies to pray for peace. Monks, nuns, Buddhist followers, and local residents respectfully offer incense before the Three Jewels, the ancestral altar, and the deities worshipped at the pagoda, commemorating the merits of their predecessors and praying for health, good fortune, and success in the new year. Traditional practices such as fortune casting, yin–yang divination, and prayers for blessings and prosperity are also conducted, attracting a large number of participants. Many visitors observe the custom of offering incense and collecting sacred buds at the beginning of the year, bringing them home with the belief that they will receive blessings, wealth, and protection throughout the year.
The festive section is lively and vibrant, featuring a variety of traditional folk games imbued with local cultural identity. These activities not only provide entertainment but also strengthen community bonds, foster solidarity, and raise awareness of the importance of preserving cultural heritage. During the festival days, Dong Lan Pagoda becomes a gathering place for pilgrims and visitors from near and far, creating a bustling cultural atmosphere rich in ethnic identity.
Through the Dong Lan Pagoda Festival, the historical, cultural, and spiritual values of the site continue to be preserved and disseminated. The festival not only fulfills the religious needs of the local population but also contributes to the transmission of the tradition of “remembering the source of one’s blessings,” honoring moral values, and guiding people toward a compassionate, harmonious, and sustainable way of life within the community.

La fête de la pagode Dong Lan
Période
Les 7 et 8 du premier mois lunaire.
Lieu
