Ky Sam Temple Festival

Time

The Ky Sam Temple Festival is held annually on the 9th and 10th days of the first lunar month.

Location

Ky Sam Temple, at the foot of Khau Sam Mountain, located in Ban Ngan Village (currently Hamlet 9), Vinh Quang Commune, Cao Bang City, Cao Bang Province.

History and Cultural Relics

Ky Sam Temple is dedicated to the renowned general Nung Tri Cao (1025–1053), an ethnic Tay leader who lived in the first half of the 11th century under King Ly Thai Tong. The temple was established early by local people, rebuilt several times, and is one of the largest shrines within the system of temples, pagodas, and communal houses in Cao Bang Province.

The temple occupies a spacious site and is constructed in a “Nhi” (二)-shaped architectural layout, reflecting Nguyen-era style. It comprises a worship hall (bai duong) and a rear sanctuary (hau cung). The worship hall houses a single altar, while the rear sanctuary contains three altars: the central altar venerates Nung Tri Cao, the left altar honors his mother A Nung, and the right altar is dedicated to his three wives. The temple also preserves numerous valuable ritual artifacts and three ancient trees recognized as Vietnam Heritage Trees, contributing to a sacred and venerable atmosphere.

Nung Tri Cao was born in 1025, the son of the local leader Nung Ton Phuc. From a young age, he displayed exceptional intelligence and skills in both civil and military affairs. In 1039, after his father was eliminated by the Ly court, he and his mother retreated to Dong Loi Hoa and rebuilt their forces. By 1041, at age 16, Nung Tri Cao and his mother recaptured Thang Do Prefecture and established the Dai Lich Kingdom. Although the Ly court later captured him, they spared his life due to the sensitive border situation and appointed him Chau Muc of Quang Nguyen, granting him several high-ranking titles.

From 1048, Nung Tri Cao expanded his military activities into Song territory, establishing the Nam Thien Kingdom and later Dai Nam, proclaiming himself emperor. He implemented policies to stabilize the local population and enjoyed strong popular support. In 1053, facing a major campaign led by Song general Dich Thanh, he was defeated and retreated to the Dali region. Despite his unfinished campaign, Nung Tri Cao remains a significant historical figure. His rebellion demonstrated the resilience of northern frontier peoples, helped resist Song encroachment, and safeguarded national borders. He is revered as a cultural hero, spiritual leader, and protector of agriculture.

In recognition of his achievements, the Ly court posthumously honored him as Khau Sam Dai Vuong and established a temple at Ban Ngan (now Vinh Quang Ward, Cao Bang City), ranking him among the Upper-ranked Deities (Thuong Dang Than). Ky Sam Temple was designated a national historical site under Decision No. 43-VH/QD on January 16, 1993.

Ky Sam Temple Festival

Held annually on the 10th day of the first lunar month, the Ky Sam Temple Festival is one of the most prominent traditional festivals of Cao Bang Province. It commemorates Khau Sam Dai Vuong Nung Tri Cao, a national hero who played a vital role in defending the northern frontier. The festival carries deep spiritual significance and serves as a key cultural event fostering community cohesion among the region’s ethnic groups.

The ceremonial segment begins early in the morning in a solemn and reverent atmosphere. The festival opens with the inaugural ritual and a procession carrying offerings from the temple courtyard to the worship hall. The procession includes flag bearers, drum and gong teams, local elders, religious officials, and representatives of ethnic communities in traditional attire, creating a sacred and dignified ambiance. This is followed by offerings and incense presented at Nung Tri Cao’s altar, honoring his immense contributions to the homeland and nation.

The ritual ceremonies follow traditional customs, including liturgies praising Nung Tri Cao’s life, achievements, and military feats, while prayers are offered for national peace, favorable weather, abundant harvests, prosperity, and border security. Throughout the ceremony, numerous devotees and visitors sincerely offer incense, pray, and express their admiration and gratitude to the frontier hero.

Following the solemn rites, the festive segment begins, lively and vibrant, reflecting the cultural spirit of Cao Bang’s ethnic communities. Various traditional games and sports activities are organized, such as tossing the con, tug-of-war, pole-pushing, wrestling, traditional martial arts, crossbow shooting, football, and stilt walking, attracting enthusiastic participation from youth and visitors.

In addition, the festival features vibrant cultural performances including Then singing, Dan Tinh lute music, lion dances, dragon dances, ethnic costume displays, and demonstrations of traditional martial skills. These activities not only create a joyful spring atmosphere but also help preserve and promote traditional cultural values, cultivate national pride, and foster awareness of local historical and cultural heritage.

Therefore, the Ky Sam Temple Festival functions both as a sacred space commemorating ancestors and a major communal celebration, reflecting the integration of folk religion, history, and the unique cultural identity of Cao Bang’s frontier ethnic groups.
